S-Clarke Posted 5 December, 2009 Share Posted 5 December, 2009 Few of their fans seem to be very bitter about it, saying we were average. Not according to some of the forums ive been looking at.... '' ''They were quality all over the park, we werent really in it until all over. Sansara very light weight they spotted that and the visiting scouts will have noticed to i'm sure. Wanted us to show our play off ambitions today, I saw 8-14th. S'ton possibly the best side at Bescot for years.'' ''We got taught a lesson today and id even say Southampton a much better side than Leeds came down..!'' ''I think that bit of class caught the lad out. But no he's not the scapegoat. They sure did their homework on Steve Jones and they looked a class act.''''

SouthportSaint Posted 5 December, 2009 Share Posted 5 December, 2009 Just in from the game. The 10 minutes before half-time, after we took the lead, was the best period of play I have seen from a Saints team in a long time. Walsall could not get a touch. Overlapping down the right was superb - at times the overlapping full back was being overlapped!
SaintNeil90 Posted 5 December, 2009 Share Posted 5 December, 2009 How useless was that Rayner female linesman. So many times the ball went out and she didnt flag, some many offsides given that clearly werent offside and then not even spotting the Walsall player kick Harding. Just goes to show how she is only a professional referee to try and tempt more women into being officials, rather than being there on merit. We lost 3-1 to Brightoon and they were far from being the best team we have played so it means nothing. pap Posted 5 December, 2009 Share Posted 5 December, 2009 Just back myself. Another impressive win. Took a little while to get out of the blocks, but very cool once we'd got going. There was a lot to admire about Jaidi. I know he's a big bloke but he's also got great positioning - he seemed to be under every ball, even managing a cheeky defensive diving header. Have to share the views of others regarding the officials. The ref lacked authority when it counted, and was fooled too many times by Byfield's frequent plunges to the floor. Overall, very impressive performance from the team. There was a five minute spell where the Walsall goal was being peppered with crosses and shots. That didn't lead to a goal, but was indicative of Saints dominance. Our fans were top too. Brilliant craic just behind the middle of the goal. Favourite song of the day? "I've got a shed that's bigger than this" Closely followed by "We've got more fans than you".
corky morris Posted 5 December, 2009 Share Posted 5 December, 2009 Thoroughly professional performance from Saints. Special word for James, Morgan & Connolly. Female lino was shocking! yorkie Posted 5 December, 2009 Share Posted 5 December, 2009 Just back too - can endorse almost everything said but we were cruising at times and letting them play. We are head and shoulders above the sides in thios League and if we don't make the play-offs nd get promoted even with the -10 start the other clubs have - we only hve ourselves to blame. At times we are so composed and solid it reminds me of teams of yesteryear. We create so much space for our own players it's frightening - and why we create so many chances. Hard to pick the best player - James was very composed today and I thought is forming a great partnership with Murty on the right - they seem to have clicked. On a final note the officials are sh*te in this league - do they have badges? Totally chickened out for the penalty in the first 10-mins...it was blatant! Still another good day at the office - forget talking the lads up for fear they will blow it, this lot mean business, and that should mean playoffs and promotion. After the performances in the last 11-days we rightly expect to go all the way. The only thing to stop us will be injuries or new players in January upsetting the team spirit. shurlock Posted 5 December, 2009 Share Posted 5 December, 2009 (edited) Just back from the game - thought we were pretty ordinary and disjointed for the first and last third of the game, not helped by the ref who was a fussy SOB (the one exception was the pen he missed) and a lino who forgot that this is a man's sport (apart from the blatant push on Harding she missed). Initially, thought James was a pretty negative choice at RM, though hats off to him he had a decent game, especially in the second half when Schneiderlin released him with some incisive balls. Nonetheless without pace in the team, the ball down the channel is pretty useless - and we were pretty one-dimensional. Whether we play 4-4-2 or 4-5-1, the common factor to the way Pards sets us up is the need and ability to exploit space down the channels - and here pace helps no end. Connolly was easily the MOM. For me he started to impose himself on the game after he started to peel off and pick the ball up in wider positions - and he's no slouch. His goal was sheer class - in some ways better than the Norwich goal. Taken early, it was the tightest of angles and there was only place he could put his shot, just inside the far post - and he expertly delivered. After that, we ran riot and could/should have had three or four - again Connolly was at the heart of everything - he ran at defenders, leading to our second, took the ball down with his back to goal, firing off shots at will. Only disappointment was that after the third goal we were a bit scrappy but I guess that's called closing the game out. Encouragingly, Perry and Jaidi, for all their age, more than dealt with Walsall's pace. Perry seems to enjoy playing with Jaidi - can concentrate on reading the game, leaving the aerial battles and rough stuff to Jaidi. I also think that the return of Murty has been crucial. His distribution is excellent and isn't afraid to take the ball forward and pick a pass - Harding for all his defensive qualities lacks Murty's composure and distribution. Just a shame that Murty and Lallana don't play on the same side of the pitch. Too early to say whether Bart will do the biz. His kicking was erratic and he flapped at a few crosses - apart from a chance in the first few mins and the goal, I can't think of him being tested. In other words, the jury is still out - guess Leeds will be the baptism of fire. I remember saying after the Stockport game that despite our frustrating results, there was no team that had truly frightened us or had us on the backfoot. Yes there are exceptions in this league - Norwich for instance- but that observation still applies today. Only difference is that we are now scoring goals. Whether we have really hit our stride or are relying on the mediocrity of the opposition is still unclear. We still seem unable to play in top gear for long, consistent spells. No doubt we'll find out in the next few months as the playoff push unfolds... Edited 5 December, 2009 by shurlock
Barney Trubble Posted 5 December, 2009 Share Posted 5 December, 2009 I thought we were outstanding at times, yet once they got back to 3-1, I still was riddled with anxiety - maybe that says more about me than the team but I think we still looked a little shaky when they put the aerial ball into the box. Bart did well when he needed to, still needs to learn to kick straight and my heart sank in the second half when I thought he had caught the ball but fell over the line - phew! Connolly was immense, he may not have the greatest pace but he has a magnificent footballing brain and so much natural ability. He reminded me of Pahars, in that when he got the ball, I really expect something brilliant to happen. Took his goal well and was my MoM. Jahidi was a one man mountain, I don't think he lost many headers and he seems to be gelling well with Perry. James put some nice crosses into the danger areas and looked more composed than usual, he looked relaxed and as though he was enjoying it, I guess that's confidence for you. We played some wonderful football at times and I don't think there is any team int his league that could match us, based ont hat last 20 mins of the first half, it was breathtaking pass and move football, I thought I was at Anfield circa 1982 for a moment. Referee was a total fool and how he never saw that push, that should have been a penalty, I'll never quite fathom. Linestotty was useless, still, at least it looks nice for the diversity and PC people - unfortunately she was ****ing inept. Right, off to watch the boxing, order a curry, drink more Port and then watch Saints for ten seconds on the highlights later this evening. Let's hope he can carry on, and go from strength to strength. A couple of weeks ago I was demanding that James should be out of the team as he was simply not good enough. Gis Posted 5 December, 2009 Share Posted 5 December, 2009 You must have been watching a different game to me as Murty's distribution today was beyond shocking. Granted, two or three of Murty's passes ended in the car park today. But him at the back and James ahead of him in midfield, is so much better for the team than any other combination we have got for the Right Side. Also noticed Lallana covering Dan Harding on the left really well today, that plus Connolly and Lambert up front, SpiderMan and Hammond in midfield, and Perry and Jaidhi - all of a sudden we've got players working together, so different to the last few seasons where if someone was in trouble they were 'hung out to dry' by the rest of the team. oggiee Posted 6 December, 2009 Share Posted 6 December, 2009 Fantastic to wake up this morning and see Saints in 15th, after seeing us in the relegation zone for something like 337 days, it feels great to see us clear at last. Some people say that our position at the moment doesn't matter but IMO it does, it is good for the fans confidence, it will boost our next home attendance (expect about 23k for Tranmere), and it will be good for the club to bring in better players during January.
