Debt free and Liebherr paying for training ground

Interesting interview on Solent with Cortese;

would not have taken the job to be chairman just in league 1 - only to be a premiership chairman.

The club is totally debt free and is not going to use banks for finance.

The training ground development is all being paid with by Liebherr putting his hand in his pocket and fans should not worry about the club building up debts.

Twas a good interview.

This is not a man who is going to settle for "just staying up" as some were trying to make out earlier on in the season.

Promotion is on for this season, and I get the feeling we will add one or two significant names to the squad in Jan.

Still needs to make up with the Echo though (but use the other thread for that one).

I don't know if anyone else read it but in the Mail on Sunday one of their reporters was going on about Ricky Lambert and what a great bit of business it was getting him,he then went on to say as 1 million pound is a lot for league one especially at cash strapped Southampton.

I wonder if anyone has mentioned to him that we have no debt and owned by a billionaire.

Agreed !

With perhaps the exception of Leeds, we already possess the strongest squad in this division and that is being put together with promotion in mind.

Also agree that squad additions are likely and I suspect one will be a centre forward as cover for Lambo !

Maybe he has good reason

I don't think he should apologise.

If he promised a proper announcement, and the Echo jumped the gun to get a cheap headline they should take the consequences if they continue to stand by their story.

Cortese seems to be a very fair-minded fellow who goes out of his way to be fair to people. This was a bit of cheap journalism and the comment about the children's hospital bit was pathetic. I'd think a chance to watch the Saints players training would be a real lift for any sick kid !:o

Yea, I read that too. Some reporters just haven't read up about us since last season!

Is there a link for this, or do you remember when he was interviewed so that we can listen again on iPLayer..?

The interview went out at half time last night, NickG's quotes are right on the money, made me smile when the interviewer asked if it was coming out of Markus's pocket, and Nicola almost giggled as he said "yeah you'd be right to assume that"!

Oh it feels good to be a Saints fan again...

I am ashamed to say that i did read that, i don't usually associate myself with that toilet paper.

I actually wrote an email to the daily mail complaining about the term 'cash-strapped' and imploring them to do their research. Also, didn't like them saying that Lambert could help us back into the Championship, when our goal the Premier League.

They don't have the right to ill research lower league clubs just because we don't splash our financial situation all over the news.:x

IMO the longer they refer to us as cash-strapped the better. If it means that we can gain an advantage, particularly in the transfer market, by being considered financially impoverished, when in fact we are on a strog financial footing then so much the better.

Exactly! If people think we're skint, they wont over charge us for players!
