January signings

This should probably be put on a different thread but I couldn't be arsed to sift through and find it...

I was at a Christmas do last night where I met the wife of one of Saints' physios who told me that Liebherr has released "sizeable funds" for Pardew to strengthen the playing squad in January. Interesting times ahead methinks!

I think Markus has probably looked at the situation...and he realizes that there is a chance if we could get up last season, than the ''5 year plan'' could become a 3 year plan. If we can just add to the squad a bit more in January with real quality, then we have a massive chance.

for the first time ever, i'm really really looking forward to this window - we won't have to worry about losing any of our key guys either.

I'd expect us to do another ''marquee'' signing. if that's beckford, i don't know - but Simeon Jackson is the next best option IMO...

It would be hard for Leeds, at top of table and going for auto promotion to stomach selling to team below them.

Not sure how well placed they are financially?

Enough to ask for £4-5m. Which is way over the top for him.

Think we'll get Lee Barnard from Southend.

It was probably tongue in cheek, but AP was saying "imagine Beckford and Lambert playing together". Don't tease us, Alan .... unless you can make it happen.

IMO, I can't see him leaving the top side in the league with a 90% chance of promotion for a midtable side. Unless we can double his wages?

I'm not sure, they've not got that debt hanging over them anymore from the premiership days - and they pocketed £8m in the summer from selling Delph

i know alot of Leeds' fans aren't too happy with the way Bates is withholding the money though...

I'd love Beckford, but I don't think it's realistic tbh. I don't think he's going to leave a team virtually guaranteed promotion to come to one battling for the play-offs. Having said that though, I did read Pardew's comments the other day where he said that Beckford and Lambert would compliment each other so maybe there is hope!

or tripple his wages! i don't think we'd get him though, it just wouldn't make sense.

One thing though, Bates and Co would def. listen to offers for him - as he's out of contract in the summer and up to now has been refusing to sign. The thing is though...he's not signing because he wants to play in the championship, so he's waiting to see where they end up i guess.

Sorry for being a bit nieive or however you spell it. But does Beckford actually belong to Leeds or is he on loan. If he is on loan who from?

Leed's home and grown.

He was on loan at scunny a few seasons back - but when leeds came down to L1 he became a prominent figure in their team.

Ok, So where are our weakest areas?

RCB

RB

CM (to cover for Jaidi)

Striker (to cover for Connolly)

surely.

From the Championship or lower leagues (realistically) and if we could cherry pick, who are the players that would suit us best? Remember, skills are useless without temperament, attitude and teamwork. We don't want a troublemaker in the dressing room.

RB - Priority imo. Let's see what City say if we put in a bid for Logan...the guy on-loan at Tranmere.

and another CM - someone like Racon or Abdu (as i keep mentioning...)

i think pard's has made a striker his priority though, he's mentioned in a few interviews that everything goes through lambert...and we don't have any cover for him. So i'd expect us to get a striker of a similar stature...patrick agyemang? he was interesting us in the summer and has been transfer listed at QPR.

I would expect us to at least try and get him in January. Desperately need a RB and a DM and CB.

Those three positions and a striker we would be sorted for this league and have a decent squad at CCC level.

In terms of importance i'd say:

Centre back - Whitbread

Striker - Beckford

Right back - Logan

Def mid - Carsley

Get those four and I'd be quite happy

Racon please and also possibly Shelvey from Charlton, he may have gone off the radar of some of the top teams as his form hasnt been brilliant, going to be a class player though

How about Pilkington from Huddersfield or Williams from Bristol Rovers, two class acts from the games i've seen them this season

Also Simeon Jackson, just think he would be awesome with Lambert especially when Connolly cant play every game

And finally some Championship players, Billy Sharp? Elliott Ward?

I know its more about getting a blend and team spirit, but not bad start to aim having one of the top two or three for each position for this division.

Guessing not far off in a few positions.

Not far off. Kelvin is one of the top keepers and the 2 strikers are up there. Harding maybe, Lallana and Hammond. Almost half the team I would say.

Anyone who thinks Beckford would come here in the January window really needs a reality check. He's virtually guaranteed a CCC place next season, whereas with ourselves it would be up in the air. If his contract is running out in the summer, it makes it a double no brainer.

I cannot see past getting in loans for the January window, unless we can't get the right personnel for the positions required (as often the decent loans only become available towards the end of the window). Most of these League 1 players would require changing out if you were making a serious attempt at getting out of the CCC. Loans give you that flexibility and if with an option, covered all ways.

Who knows how much money we have and who knows who we can attract.

Beckford would obviously be quality but it is NEVER going to happen.

Simeon Jackson or Lee Barnard for me, very good players who will compliment Lambo and are very realistic imo. Jackson in particular is very highly rated by the gillingham fans ive met up here, and they all agree that he would flourish in a better team. Look at his scoring record for Gillingham - and they are gash. In our team he would get bags imo

Beckford is a Londoner and only signed for Leeds in 2006 having spent several years in non-League with Wealdstone. I doubt he'd be happy to be the third choice striker with us anyway. We have the best finisher in the league, David Connolly, and Rickie Lambert is too good to drop.

Deluded people on here thinking we would sign beckford, why would he leave leeds for a div 1 club or at best championship, he would only sign for a prem team probably in jan or in the summer

FFS no one has said we will sign Beckford. Are you Beckford? If not then just stay quiet. This is a thread about who people would like and nobody has any idea about how likely a player signing is. If we paid leeds 4 million and tripled his wages then who the hell knows.

I'm a little undecided on whether this would be a good thing, spending big in January could be a bad move. There is clearly a sense of togetherness amongst the current squad, and it always takes time for players to bed in. Time we don't have, as we probably have to win something like 2 out of every 3 games for the rest of the season to get in the play-offs.

Difficult to deny that additional quality and cover in key positions (centre-half, centre-forward) would be handy.

Depends on who it is I guess, I have to admit I've been very impressed with Pardew's signings so far.

Surely we should duscussing possible signings as appossed to very unlikely ones I would have thought

A new centre back is not going to unsettle the side - it looks like Trotman is off anyway. Same for a new right back - we can't rely on Murty and James is better elsewhere. Up front we are very dependent on Lambert so a bit of cover there would be wise.

And if we sort out those three positions then winning 2 out of every 3 games for the rest of the season is absolutely possible.

Abdu, Barnard, Le Fondre, Craddock, Whitbread, Puncheaon, Beckford, Racon, Bridcutt, Grant.

I think we could end up seeing one of these in a Saints shirt come January.

Pards is a big fan of Lloyd so I dont think he will have RB a priority unless he see's Lloyds posistion elsewhere.

? :D

lol Typo. Should have read CB backup for Jaidi. We also need stronger replacements for all our aging and injury-prone stalwarts: Perry, Wotton, Murti, Connolly, Thomas. I can't see them lasting the season in top form for all matches. When we need them most they'll sometimes be unavailable.

Seconded, besides, we're ok up front

What we really need is a pacy, athletic centre-back to compliment Jaidi/Trotman who IMO are too similar. Our biggest weakness this season has been our vulnerability to counter-attacks and whilst yes we're doing well at the moment. We aren't there yet, strengthening is still needed.

Simeon Jackson would be a great addition and I think would compliment Lambert really well if we could get him, but at the moment I don't think up front is really a priority. Would be a great signing though and would definately give us the best front two in the league.

I disagree we have no real cover up front surely we need another Striker

Depends what happens with Saga and only AP knows about Connolly - if Saga goes and Connolly is likely to be in and out of the team, a striker would be my no.1 priority.

If not, I think we need an attacking central midfielder especially in a 4-5-1. Notwithstanding all the goals, the triad of Schneiderlin, Hammond and Wotton hardly exudes attacking intent while Mellis is likely to return to Chelsea. At times, there's been too much space between our midfield and forwards which has forced the long ball.

Rather than a CB, I would go for a DM who could play at the back if necessary while lesseingn the reliance on Wotton, a pacy, younger Christian Dailly. But pace is important. If Gillett goes to Donnie, then a DM becomes more important.

A photocopy of Dan Harding at RB would be useful -its singularly our weakest spot in the team though I don't think it has much impact on our overall balance.

Finally cover for Lallana at LM wouldnt go amiss as Holmes or Mills have hardly figured in Pards plans. Been impressed with Jeff Hughes of Bristol Rover who seems capable of covering the whole left-hand side. Doing so would free Lallana go to a more central AM position (see above) which in my view is his natural position.
