Saint_clark Posted 23 March, 2010 Share Posted 23 March, 2010 Everybody has been saying it all season - including Rickie. Same with Lallana. Pardew did however say that if a Prem team came in with the right offer it would be up to Lambert, but that it would be a MASSIVE gamble for a Prem team to pay the sort of money Saints would want. Liquidshokk Posted 23 March, 2010 Author Share Posted 23 March, 2010 Must be very tempting for him though, loyalty VS huge payrise. Assuring to know his blood is red and white.... for now
Saint_clark Posted 23 March, 2010 Share Posted 23 March, 2010 Pardew was very shrewd in his "Rickie can be a Saints legend on par with Keegan and Channon". I'm sure the thought of being that highly regarded is a fantastic prospect for someone like him and it may just be the swaying factor in any decisions regarding transfers in the future. Liquidshokk Posted 23 March, 2010 Author Share Posted 23 March, 2010 If the worst happened and we remained in league 1 (or 2 heaven forbid) for a few seasons his loyalty would probably be tested as I doubt it would be easy to become a legend without the limelight of the premiership. Lucky we'll be back in the premiership by 2013 then ;-)

Liquidshokk Posted 23 March, 2010 Author Share Posted 23 March, 2010 Hmmm Surman, the True Saint/Bitterne Boy who was never leaving only to leave shortly after does indeed come to mind. I really hoped he would stay and think he'd be good amongst our current players....

FWIW he said he wouldn't be leaving 3 years before he actually did, so "at the first sniff of cash" is completely wrong.

Does it say he won't be going anywhere...I think not. Once again the Echo making something out of nothing. I would think that Lambert may have a clause in his contract that if an EPL club comes in for him he can talk to them, with or without our permission. Genk Posted 23 March, 2010 Share Posted 23 March, 2010 Highly unlikely that a Premiership team will pay the money we would want. Look, Rickie has just settled here, he will be here next season for sure. If we don't go up next season then yes it is very likely he will move. Window Cleaner Posted 23 March, 2010 Share Posted 23 March, 2010 (edited) It really wouldn't. 4m maybe, which isn't a gamble for prem teams these days. I think he'd do well in the right team too. I think due to a new overseas rights contract which kicks in at the start of next season the EPL clubs will get an additional 13 million each although it may be performance based and the 13 million is a mean figure. Plus there is the new "homegrown" quota which kicks in as well, maybe that won't make all that much difference though. doddisalegend Posted 23 March, 2010 Share Posted 23 March, 2010 Lambert can talk to any club he likes along as that club comes up with the right cash (at least 4million I reckon) everyones laughing. I think Lambert is fantastic but with 4mil we could could get quite a lot of quaility division one players. Brizzile have survived without him and so would we. With the management we have now I'm confident that money will be spent on quaility replacements rather than diappering without a trace like it did under the previous regime. Mind you if Lambert wants to stay I'll be very very happy.
Cabrone Posted 23 March, 2010 Share Posted 23 March, 2010 Money talks in this game and if the right offer came in then he'd be sold. However I think a winning bid would have to be pretty big (£4M+) and who of all the clubs that might be interested has that kind of cash?

However I think a winning bid would have to be pretty big (£4M+) and who of all the clubs that might be interested has that kind of cash? This is exactly my point. CCC clubs can't afford to pay that kind of cash, and Prem clubs can't afford to take that kind of gamble on a player who isn't even tried at Championship level. krissyboy31 Posted 23 March, 2010 Share Posted 23 March, 2010 We've got the financial muscle to repel just about any bid outside of the Premier League. I doubt any Prem club would be looking to take a chance on RL, so I think it's a fair assumption that he'll be here next season at least.

StuRomseySaint Posted 23 March, 2010 Share Posted 23 March, 2010 I expect Lambert to stay for the ride... People have to remember we now have the money to match the wages of pretty much any team... 35-40 goals a season is worth 20k a week in wages... and if we need to pay them to keep him, we will. He was sold to make ends meet whilst we were broke. If he'd refused to go we might have gone bust completely before Liebherr could get past those Pinnacle time-wasters and save us. K. SNSUN Posted 23 March, 2010 Share Posted 23 March, 2010 Theres' no reason to sell anyone in the summer unless they want to go. We're building for the future, which means all the players we have, excepting the chaff, must stay.

K. exactly, the transfers of surman and others bought us valuable time to get the sale of the club through, very unfair comparison and if it hadn't have been for our situation he wouldn't have gone to wolves. I'm more confident than ever before that we are in a great position to keep players we want and failing that if someone does leave the investment will go back into the team. for_heaven's_Saint Posted 23 March, 2010 Share Posted 23 March, 2010 Is it standard practice to match a club's offer for wages in order to keep a player? I know we need to spend within our means but say someone came in and offered him another 5 grand a week, could we just say that we'd match it if he stays here? Most professional sportspeople want to play at the highest level possible. That's why a few players (or so they say) turned us down in January. You can always hack along on what you earn but sportspeople live for the challenge.
Under Weststand Posted 23 March, 2010 Share Posted 23 March, 2010 Whilst I think that Rickie will stay with us next year, he has no loyalty for us as a club & lets face it there's not much loyalty in football anymore! Rickie has been at a few lower league clubs until a longer spell at Bristol Rovers, but now he's at a more high profile club, & stepped up to the mark with 30 goals & more to come hopefully. There will be clubs at a higher level at the moment who may well test our reserve in the transfer window, but I doubt he would go just for the CCC. I hope & don't think an EPL club will come knocking on our door just yet. I think he's been sold on what the club hopes to achieve in the next couple of seasons & he's bought into that.
Chez Posted 23 March, 2010 Share Posted 23 March, 2010 he's been here less than a year, there is no real loyalty in football, he's not getting any younger, and he hasn't had a big pay day in his career yet. Four reasons why he will leave if the right offer from the right club comes in. But who in the CCC has the money to gamble on him?
