martel Posted 6 July, 2010 Share Posted 6 July, 2010 Like most of us I have a lot of faith in AP and NC, however, we do seem to be a bit slow in getting the players in that we will surely need in terms of cover for what is a long season. For example Poyet has been fairly active for Brighton and I reckon they will be a far better team this coming season, personally I rate Poyet highly and they could be a dark horse. I only hope and presume that AP has a game plan and everything will drop into place over the next two-three weeks, in terms of the players needed I agree with most of you that another right back and an additon in midfield is upper most; this midfield position (on the left side) though could be filled with Ryan Dickson, anyway your views on this would be appreciated, perhaps I am being a little paranoid, I don't know, all I know is that I want us back in the championship next season. Ivan Katalinic's 'tache Posted 6 July, 2010 Share Posted 6 July, 2010 I think the most concerning thing is the lack of communications from Pardew, TBH (as per the recent thread). If he'd said something outlining his vision for the season ahead, reassuring us all about forthcoming transfer activity etc, I'm sure most of us panickers would draw breath... The Kraken Posted 7 July, 2010 Share Posted 7 July, 2010 True, but how many of those (who haven't susbsequently been replaced) played any significant part for us last season? Our squad was bloated and a lot of those released were dead wood. Lets have a look at who we released. Lloyd James - surprised we let him go actually. Can't be on high wages and while never going to be a starter he can do a job at CM, RM or RB. Would have been adequate cover IMO at RB. But the home game against Oldham where he came on then was subbed off again probably sealed his fate. Simon Gillett - looked ok under the Dutchies but obviously never rated by AP so no surprise to see him go. For me always looked a weak link under AP, his season was probably summmed up by the Birmingham League Cup game when he came on and we shipped two goals in 10 minutes. Oliver Lancashire - no surprise, no regrets, just not good enough. Chris Perry - played well last season when called upon but with Seaborne and Martin in reserve was rarely going to get an opportunity. Wayne Thomas - probably very high wages, injury prone. Would have preferred to have kept him but I expect costs dictated otherwise. Graeme Murty - great player but ruined by injury; could perhaps be re-signed on a pay as you play though would be backup for Richardson. Jon Otsemobor - not good enough. After that you reach the likes of Jamie White, Michael Poke, Jake Thomson, Kayne McLaggon, Tom Dunford, and Jack Boyle. And I have to say that if he haven't challenged the first team by now then they need to move to progress their own careers.
Saints67 Posted 7 July, 2010 Share Posted 7 July, 2010 Personally I believe this man will be back-up for Richardson with a youngster as back-up to the back-up Graeme Murty - perhaps re-signed on a pay as you play

The Kraken Posted 7 July, 2010 Share Posted 7 July, 2010 They still have to be replaced Lloyd James Chris Perry Wayne Thomas Jon Otsemobor Papa and Antonio Otsemobor: replaced by Richardson. Perry: replaced by Seaborne. Thomas: replaced by Martin. James: Murty lined up for replacement?? Papa and Antonio remain the two that are outstanding; I would hope to still secure the services of Antonio, Papa I wouldn't miss as much as we would then have Punch and Antonio for right wing, and Barnard and Connolly as the accompaniment to RL up front. Where I'd say we do need to still strengthen is another CM and a Lambert style replacement forward (though that one could prove more difficult). And being as AP himself has outlined these areas previously I'm confident we'll get what we need. Rather than having such an inflated squad as last year I think AP may well keep it streamlined and bring in "emergency" loans as and when we need them. Third Division South Days Posted 7 July, 2010 Share Posted 7 July, 2010 They still have to be replaced Lloyd James Chris Perry Wayne Thomas Jon Otsemobor Papa and Antonio To be fair I don't think we are too far away. Dickson and Richardson have come in and Aaron Martin certainly looked good enough in the few games he played in last season. Also Oxlade-Chamberlain may start to feature more often. The return of Antonio or a signing of someone similar would be useful. One thing I'm pretty sure of is that AP will come out with a statement when signings in this window are complete(he did it in January). Until then I would expect to see additional faces. St Lej Posted 7 July, 2010 Share Posted 7 July, 2010 I am not concerned about this in the slightest. stu0x Posted 7 July, 2010 Share Posted 7 July, 2010 They still have to be replaced Lloyd James Chris Perry Wayne Thomas Jon Otsemobor Papa and Antonio Why do they? If they contributed next-to-nothing, what is the point in bringing in replacements? To do equally nothing? If we bring in one wide midfielder and one centre back (both of which I would anticipate us doing), all of those players are essentially obsolete. You don't need to replace them all man for man if they weren't all first team starters.

That was last season when we didn't have much of a team and he needed to get players in. This season we basically have the same starting team that was best in the division at end of last season, AP is probably not after freebies this season, freebies are probably not good enough to displace what we already have. He will probably bring in a couple more as back up (CM/CF) and I suspect Papa might yet return. Don't think there is much need for more.

That was the point I was going to make. No matter how much money we have we do need to allow young players to come through so I'm not in favour of buying cover players if it restricts home grown talent. That really does seem the trend for our signings, I'm confident it will continue. Pretty much like all of you I'd like a very good CM and striker. If that was the end of our transfer activity I'd be more than happy. In 1977/78 we signed Boyer ( a direct replacement for MC), Nichol and Pickering. Alan Ball had been signed in Jan 1977 I believe. 3 of the 4 plenty good enough for the top flight, Pickering not quite that standard but very good in Div 2 and formed a very good partnership with Nichol. That said a lot of our fans seem to be completely fixated by him but in my mind his substitutions and tactics are at times found wanting, and the fact that we did not sign a CM in jan when we were clearly in desperate need for one concerned me somewhat. BUT, he is the best we could get in this division more or less, and i am one to give people a chance and not change a settled side so we shall see and i hope he changes my on the fence attitude.
