Gemmel Posted 30 October, 2010 Share Posted 30 October, 2010 Nipper just came home beaten up by some 40 year stone island hero. I have let him go to away games since he was 15 (He was 17 last week) and he goes to most of them... Him and his mates are proper Saints fans. They go by train all around the country and have never had any trouble. Matey wanted to know where our "Youth" was. Mum not happy and doesn't want him to go again. I'm just gutted for him, he wasn't the best looking lad before he left this morning..... This hasn't helped

St Chalet Posted 30 October, 2010 Share Posted 30 October, 2010 A real shame on such a good day. Mum should appreciate that their are nob-heads everywhere, if it wasn't at a Saints game it may well have been at a pub in town.
saintscottofthenortham Posted 30 October, 2010 Share Posted 30 October, 2010 I reckon 50% of the time I go out on the sozzle in Southampton I end up either in/involved with/or dangerously close to trouble. I have done shed loads of away days and had the slightest bit of trouble once. Funnily enough, in Nottingham. Still, a cracking place to go and your son just got unlucky. Hope he gets over it soon enough and is back out with the Red & White army soon enough.
Gemmel Posted 30 October, 2010 Author Share Posted 30 October, 2010 Sorry to hear. That's the problem with c*nts, eh? Indeed, quizzed him several times to find out whether he said anything or mouthed off but apparently just walking along and they wanted it, one big brave soldier took on someone 30 years younger than him> he's probably in the pub now reliving his victory

Luckily by the fact he is at home joking with his dad and the tone of the OP i think he seems ok, which i am glad for (i know he may have got a lump but i guess he is walking, it could have been worse) TBH though you could tell his mum he is probably in more danger being in town of a Friday/Sat night, but at 17 i guess you have that all to come Still, hope he is feeling better soon. Was in aura in Southampton last night for first time, quickly realised it is full of 17 year olds (if that) and it was no surprise that before long one of them was squaring up to me and my mate. At 27 years old all I could do was laugh, shake my head and walk away but had I been their age then it would have been one of the many such fights in southampton last night... chrisobee Posted 31 October, 2010 Share Posted 31 October, 2010 All teams have their share of idiots. In fact the closest I ever came to a scrap was with a few of our own idiots hassling 2 young Leeds kids on the way back to Central station. We'd won 4-0 so I think their day had been bad enough already !! I'd say football these days is a lot safer than in the 70's and 80's to be honest. Larrylove Posted 31 October, 2010 Share Posted 31 October, 2010 Strangely enough my first home game on my own when I was about 15 if my memory serves me right was in about '85 midweek against Shrewsbury, littlewoods cup.We won 1.0 penalty can't remember who scored it.Any way from the Milton Road end you could see this man mountain in the Archers, anyway I had the mis fortune to walk past him at the train station with my mates ,3 or 4 of them and he gave me a right hander,my mates scattered but luckily that was the end of it.Never really put me off TBF,but I understand your concerns,I think it's best to let them go young-ish to gather some smarts in these situations. for_heaven's_Saint Posted 31 October, 2010 Share Posted 31 October, 2010 There were a lot of 'casuals' about yesterday and clearly looking for trouble, overheard one group trying to organise where to meet for a fight. Your son got unlucky and I suspect be wasn't the only one. I was walking round for a bit on my own and think had I been wearing colours I may have met some trouble myself. ladysaint Posted 31 October, 2010 Share Posted 31 October, 2010 Sorry to hear that Stu hope he is ok, have met your lad a few times and know he is a true supporter and doesnt go looking for any trouble. I really hope this doesnt put him off, can understand how his Mum feels though. I started going regularly when I was about his age and remember getting hit by a brick on the head by West Brom fans who started on the group I was with, this was in the 70's, it nearly put me off going again but luckily I decided against it. andyph Posted 31 October, 2010 Share Posted 31 October, 2010 Sorry to hear about your lad but don't let it put him or you off. The Notts fans were extremely foul after the game and myself and my dad found ourselves almost in a scrap or two just walking back to the coaches, people intentionally barging us and also being on the recieving end of a delightful remark from one gentleman stating "You were s**t", to which we replied, "Beat you 3-1 though didn't we"...... He was not a happy chappy. I agree that you have more chance of getting in trouble on a night out than at an away game and it's a shame that it happened. dronskisaint Posted 31 October, 2010 Share Posted 31 October, 2010 Sorry to read this - glad your lad is ok...it is a part of the learning curve, sadly. From my own experience the only two times I got punched were when I was being a 'brave' teenager & taking the piiss after games at Chelsea & Old Trafford (late sixties/early seventies....we had won superbly both times. Experience tells me I was being a twart (albeit a very exhilarated one) & although there have been times since when I might have been involved I just grew up a bit. Doesn't sound like your boy was doing anything like this but time will teach him which side of the pavement to walk & who his mates are...like the others I wish him well & hope he doesn't let it stop his enjoyment in going. yorkie Posted 31 October, 2010 Share Posted 31 October, 2010 I had a funny experience yesterday too. Came out of the game on my own and started walking back to the car parked about 1-mile away from the ground. Bearing in mind I am 51 - some bloke came walking at me just outside the ground and looking to square up/throw a punch. There were a couple of younger lads walking by me - and it even took them aback! Perhaps he thought I was younger at a distance and then decided not too be cause I was older than I looked? He was about 30-ish I suppose - on his own and seemed to be intent on looking for someone to hit! I guess even in this day and age it's worth looking out! millbrooktonian Posted 31 October, 2010 Share Posted 31 October, 2010 Hope your lad ok .I had a similar experience in Nottingahm when I was about 14/15( in the70's ) smacked in the face by Forest fan after the game .Coppers on other side of the road did not do anything. After 76 cup final a huge Man u fan wacked me in the jaw I was only a weedy 16 year old ,him and his mates chased me ,for what seeme like miles . But what a day . MarkSFC Posted 31 October, 2010 Share Posted 31 October, 2010 During the late 80s and through most of the nineties I spent 4-5 weekends in Nottingham every year and never saw any trouble, it was a great place and night out (The Black Orchid was best!). Admitedly I only went to watch Saints at Forest once but it was great as it was supposedly 10 women for every bloke! I went back 4 years ago on work for two weeks for the first time in about 5 years and the atmosphere had totally changed especially round the town square. There seemed to be many many more "c****" out and in one night in two venues saw three small scale "arguments"!! Maybe it was my age but I think Nottingham is definitely a changed ( for the worse) city. Maybe (and this maybe a bit too analytical) the demise of Forest and Countys lowely status as well as their reputation as the gun capital of the country has taken it's toll. Gemmel, I hope your son's ok and doesn't get put off following Saints away.

All it did was make me a more determined supporter. Mum wanted to stop me going to away games, dad argued my case, and i watched club all over England and Europe just made me think about what pubs i used , who i went with, and just genearlly aware of circumstances. spyinthesky Posted 1 November, 2010 Share Posted 1 November, 2010 I used to travel to a lot of away games in the 60's/70's and 80's Closest I got to damage was being hit in the face by a (very!!) hot meat pie stood on the terraces at Ninian Park in the mid 60's. People in front of me saw it coming. They all ducked an d I got it full in the kisser!! I was wearing a brand new reefer jacket (Xmas present) and could never get rid of the smell. Coach was an old Shamrock & Rambler (no heating) and we had to look after one lad who had been attacked with an iron bar by Cardiff fans. Nearly came to grief at Elland Rd in the 70's when at Uni there. Stood amongst the Leeds fans and shouted out in anger when Billy Bremner fooled the Ref into giving a pen after an incident with Gerry Gurr. I was probably one of very few Saints fans there that day and fortunately the people around me took it all with amusement rather than hostility

Some skanky looking baldy in a tracksuit with a pikey earring barged into a Saints fan outside as we left then tried to start a ruck. The guy he barged into was just really surprised and didn't want anything to do with it. The dirty northerner was determined to have a go though but some big lad stepped in and pushed him away. As it happened, it ended up being quite funny as the dirty northerner realised he was going to a get a pasting from the bigger lad if he didn't fook off sharpish. They were really bad losers though. Surprised because they're not exactly ripping the league up. I guess one season of relative success has gone to their heads.
