theyin Posted 17 February, 2011 Share Posted 17 February, 2011 I despair coming on here. Is there ever a good news story that one or another trashes? We used to be known as a friendly family club. I don't go on other clubs' boards so can't say one way or another whether they suffer the same negative, back stabbing, trolling shown on here. One thing's for certain, if ML is logging on from up above, he surely would be wondering why he bothered trying to bring some joy to a city that it seems have a major contingent who are simply out to bash whomever and whatever is said or done within or around the club. I realise if all there was to speak about was the last or upcoming games, rumours of upcoming signings or reminisces of times past etc, the board would not be as busy, but I for one would probably stick around for a little longer, read a little more and maybe even post once in a while. We all seem guilty of it from time to time and more often with others but come on.... This is Southampton. Be proud we're on the march to the Prem, smile at your fellow Saint and put an end to all this shoite stirring. The sun is out in Melbourne, I'm feeling good today so why don't you? Really we are no different from football fans everywhere some will never see anything bad, some will never see anything good and most of us change mood depending on how the last couple of games went. If I'm honest my expectations were very very high for this season and they've not been meet so far so I'm disappointed. Others seem over the moon with the way things are going so fair play to them. Wes Tender Posted 17 February, 2011 Share Posted 17 February, 2011 I suggest you check out a few fans messageboards They're all bloody awful, http://www.owlstalk.co.uk at the moment is particularily suicidal Sheffield Wednesday fans are entitled to feel agrieved having been demoted to the third division, courting bankruptcy and not living up to expetations that they would bounce back up this season. But us? Financially secure, decent manager and squad, a bright future ahead? I couldn't agree more with the sentiments of the OP. We seem to have the sort of masochists who enjoy banging their heads against a brick wall because it feels good when they stop.

We seem to have polar opposites depending on the result. A win and we are the best team in the league, lose and we are crap, not good enough for promotion. Everything is massively overanalysed, Cortese is Satan or God and so on. Although some of those radio phone ins are hilarious, after the Liverpool game a Chelsea fan rang in to say that Liverpool fleeced Torres, they didn't need him and Lampard and Terry were over the hill. He shut up when he was reminded that this is the same side which won the double 8 months ago.

Barry the Badger Posted 17 February, 2011 Share Posted 17 February, 2011 This season is a difficult one to judge. Perhaps my expectations were too high but I expected us to be comfortably top two, rather than scrabbling around with Bournemouth, Huddersfield etc. But at the same time on those 'since Adkins' league tables we are top two but the start of the season set us back a lot. So overall I am pleased with the current set up but dissapointed with our overall progress, which is a bit confusing.

I think the run after Christmas inflated expectations; not just the wins but the manner of them, which made us look very, very good. The slight wobble since, in light of how tight it is from second down and combined with the size of the task in overhauling teams and putting distance between us and the play-offs mean that even dropping two points can seem like a terrible result. Totally agree with how massively overanalysed. Combine that with the drama-queen tendency of some football fans and you get a strange kind of madness. I stilll have expectations of being comfortably in the top two this season - but why would you conclude that the expectations were too high when we are only half way through (roughly). NA said he wanted to be 'in touch' around Christmas and push on from there. That's exactly what has happened. I'm not too worried about leading the pack at this stage - I would much prefer a late run. Besides, if you forget about that side of things you can sit back and enjoy the football which is (mainly) pretty entertaining. If we were ten points clear at the top there would still be the doom 'n' gloom merchants pointing out after the first dropped point that 'if we keep this up we will soon be knocked off the top.... Fan The Flames Posted 17 February, 2011 Share Posted 17 February, 2011 A lot of football fans see it as their right to moan about their club no matter what and teh internet has given them the perfect platform to inflict their moans on the world. However I do not see anything wrong in people asking difficult questions that are important to them no matter how well we are playing.

My expectations are that we would be comfortably top two by this point but for various reasons we are not. Still feeling positive we will do it but have to admit I put the playoff dates in my calendar last week, having previously ignored them.

Totally agree my expectations for this season were high on the back of the way last season ended. Couple that with the feeling that we are so much better off in every way than the rest of the clubs in this division means that being fourth just feels like under achievement to me. Go back a few seasons and if we had been fourth in the championship or PL at this stage of the season I'd be over the moon. This season though it just seems poor. chrisobee Posted 18 February, 2011 Share Posted 18 February, 2011 It's got nothing to do with Saints fans, or even football, that's just internet forums and comment sections. As fans, it's crazy to think we're any different to the vast majority as a group, especially of comparable club sizes. Fans want progress, often lack patience and expect an unlikely level of consistency. That will get worse, as will booing etc as the money gets more obscene. While passion for the club and sport continues, there's an increasing resentment amongst many over spending a fortune to watch some pampered millionaires kick a ball. Right on cue UEFA was last night asked to justify making this season's Champions League final at Wembley the most expensive ever, with cheapest prices of £150 plus a £26 administration fee making a mockery of president Michel Platini's claims that the event is being made more accessible to children. At the moment this forum is pretty dull!!!! Get a life - it's not life and death or work it's football, emotions, jumpers for goal posts - not constant slaps on backs and happy clappy applause for the exceptionally highly paid players that adorn our team despite poor individual or team performances. You pay your money and go along - have an opinion - good or not so - I for one want to hear it..
