ART Posted 18 October, 2008 Share Posted 18 October, 2008 Does anyone really care that much anymore? The expectation today after seeing the team sheet was so bad for me, that for the first time, for as long as I can remember, I didn't even bother logging on. hypochondriac Posted 18 October, 2008 Share Posted 18 October, 2008 Annoyingly watford were garbage and we STILL couldnt score. Our defence is the worst I have ever seen and we didn't win a thing in the air in both boxes. It was widely known at the beginning of the season that if we stayed up this season it would be a success. corsacar saint Posted 18 October, 2008 Share Posted 18 October, 2008 I walked out after the second goal[ first time ever, after 45 years supporting the team]. With a decent penalty taker, and proper defending , it should have been Saints 2-0 up and coasting. When I left I counted at least 12 others leaving. Watford are another dreadful footballing side to end up beating us easily. The pretty football is all well and good if you stick the ball in the net and defend properly we do niether. Finally if we are going to sign players on loan or permantly, surely they should be defenders .

Wtf did you all expect? Given the situation we were presented with, hanging on by the skin of our teeth was the best we could have expected for this season. But maybe there were better options available, and some part of the frustration this is generating comes out as the sentiment displayed on here. Part of the current situation is down to financial restrictions, but a significant part of it is seen simply as Rupert's overblown ego and poor appointments. He doesn't have any other option, that's the problem in a nutshell. Could have played Perry at the back I suppose but I don't doubt he has some sort of niggling 40/60 ongoing injury.Should have played John, not even on the bench, that means he didn't want to or wasn't able to play.Don't even talk to me about that .... BWP. 8K a week and about as much worth as a falling leaf to us.We are being shafted by players who take a lot and give nothing. Missing 2 penalties is pathetic, as was the defending by all accounts.[/quote'] If the 1st penalty goes in it's a wholly different game, they score anyway, if the 2nd penalty goes in it's eyes down and all to play for. I just can't believe we've missed 2 penalties. Can't keep changing the penalty taker, if it's Surman, it's his job for the season (unless injured) so he misses one-so what, he scores the other 15. I coach kids, big kids, I gave the job of penalties to the one who hit 48/50 on two consecutive afternoons in July.He might miss one but he takes them all,all season. You miss one you've had your share of bad luck/bad shooting, you take the rest like a man. Was Surman even on the field today?? or has he got that U21 I'm a king get down your dirty bastards attitude again. L1Minus10 Posted 18 October, 2008 Share Posted 18 October, 2008 Davis 6 - had no chance with any of the goals, one decent save 2nd half James 3 - Not a full back and never will be. Not good enough. may be good enough in midfield if swapped with Cork. Wotton 3 - Not a centre back as is too slow, really struggled against physical players Lancashire 5 - Did ok but woudl have been sent off again for abysmal studs up challenge had he not connected with the ball. Mills 5 - not bad but still not good enough yet for this league Cork 6 - Thought he was our best player to be honest. Doesn;t hide and puts in a decent shift. Should really be at right back though as we need to get the defence right first. Surman 4 - I know this flies in the face of most people's opinion but i don;t think Surman is a central midfielder - he's too lightweight and just disappears. In this crap formation we play he should be on the left wing. lallana 5 - nice touches but ultimately produced not a lot. McGoldrick 3 - penalty aside he had a decent first half but he should have been subbed on about 60 minutes when his head went down. Robertson 2 - abysmal. not good enough to play up front on his own but then nor is Pekhart, mcGoldrick, John and a vast majority of forwards. Smith 4 - Shocking first half but markedly improved in the 2nd. Poortvliet 1 - Sort it out you ****ing goon. Where was Stern john ? Why are we still persisting with this ****y formation ? Where is Rudi? Where was Perry? play 4-4-2 as it's back to basics and our players have a better chance of understanding it and being able to play in it. This pretty football in the middle third is a complete waste of time - we're able to do it because we have an extra player in there but this means we only have one forward so it doesn't ****ing work. It might if we had Drogba but sadly, we haven't. We're **** up front and **** at the back. Watford were ****ing **** and we gave it to them, absolutely gave it to them. 2 missed pens, a ref who wasn;t afriad to sort out the rough stuff and we still gave it away. Defend like that and we are going down. Everything else is irrelevant.

My sentiments exactly. What we need most, IMO, is a solid defence. We have the creativity, the movement, the skill and if we start playing people like John we even have the strike force to do really well in this league. Then stick someone like Wotton in as a defensive/holding midfielder and everything looks rosey without having to change a single player. BUT... without a solid defence, all that means jack. With Perry and big CB to join him and two solid, experienced fullbacks who know exactly how to out muscle, out jump and out play CCC players, we know that when our 'pretty' players further up the field lose the ball, it's not in forgone conclusion that we're about to concede. I don't think he got back until yesterday, takes a long time to row from Trinidad these days.If T+T played Wednesday night in Port of Spain, that would be at about 01hrs Thurday morning BST,time to get some rest, get back down the airport, get back home it would be well into Friday. So despite having a 2 week break clubs with player playing on Wednesday night in a different time zone will lose them again on the Saturday. Yes well, if we hadn't had this Svensson illusion all pre-season perhaps we would have done something about that before it was too late. If Thomas wasn't such a big mary then perhaps it would be Ok as well. If Davies hadn't decided he was a premiership player, well just perhaps it would be Ok as well. Weston Saint Posted 18 October, 2008 Share Posted 18 October, 2008 Just returned from watching a side likely to be relegated. Defending of set pieces is so so poor. Davis stays on his line too much and does not come to catch or punch. That puts the defence under even more pressure and goals result. Brian O'Neil (ex Saints player for you young'en) said at half time he was with Micky Channon in the week and they agreed the team has no heart. Those players in the heart of the team who can get a grip of the game is what I think he meant. We failed to challenge second ball all over the pitch. Let's make no mistake Watford are a poor side. We lack a clinical finisher up front. This team will be relegated but hopefully will be the better for it. I do not see any other way bearing in mind our ever worsening financial position and reducing attending fan base.

Sheff Saint Posted 18 October, 2008 Share Posted 18 October, 2008 Umm, we need to remember, if we stop up, this season has been a success. Next year we might be able to afford one or two that can play football. Cos that was rubbish. Just awful. Radio Hampshire on the way home said we played good football in periods, when! The first 10 mins we were ok but that was it, awful at the back, awful in the middle and we'd have played all week and not scored. One of the worst performances in a long line of terrible performances. Not being horrible, but players like Lloyd James (at RB at least) and Lancashire aren;t even good enough to be profesional footballers. If we'd have not signed them they'd have just drifted into the non leagues. Their decision making is awful. And McGoldrick needs a good rest (or shooting). Please bring Perry back, we weren;t too bad when he was in the team. And get John and Skacel on the park, please please please. I know it's a tough season ahead, but we really aren't helping ourselves. And the total football has defo finished. How many hit and hope balls were there today? 100? But, but, if we stay up, we can try again. I'm just not sure i can keep reminding myself of that for the next 7 months!!!

St Marco Posted 18 October, 2008 Share Posted 18 October, 2008 But it's like a captain watching a sinking ship and doing nothing about it, absolutley disgracefull as far as I'm concerned. Indeed. I overheard someone in the row below me (you can probably hear everyone now actually) say "This is a reserve team, a poor one too". I think that really does ring true. We have a young team out there which is out there because we are trying to do everything on the cheap. This season is a huge gamble and it looks like it is back firing.
