doddisalegend Posted 5 April, 2011 Share Posted 5 April, 2011 Well I think it is. According to a piece in the Pink before the MK Dons Match Saints have 267 shots on target this season in the league. That it an average of 7.42 shots on target per match. and is the highest shots on target per game average of any league team in any of the four divisions. The player to have the most shots on target for saints is Mr Lambert (not really a surprise). What the hell that means in the context of how we're doing as a team I have no idea. Still thought it was interesting and worth sharing.
Dimond Geezer Posted 5 April, 2011 Share Posted 5 April, 2011 I find that surprising as I didn't think our shooting was as good as last season. We've scored 1.84 goals per match, which means we've scored from 24.8% of our shots, whether thats a good ratio I've no idea. Dunno where I'm going with this so I'm giving up - I've not had a coffee yet.
SNSUN Posted 5 April, 2011 Share Posted 5 April, 2011 I think it shows how important it is to have a goalkeeper. HTH.
trousers Posted 5 April, 2011 Share Posted 5 April, 2011 The trouble with a stat such as "267 goals on target" is that it includes no measure of how good those shots were. For example, does it include scuffed shots that bobble along the ground into the keepers hands as well as screamers that get tipped over from outside the box? Pilchards Posted 5 April, 2011 Share Posted 5 April, 2011 I know we used to have the most miscued shots before Xmas, but after allowing a player out on loan to Blackpool it's got better now.

saints-cris Posted 5 April, 2011 Share Posted 5 April, 2011 I would say that having the most shots in all four divisions would be a good indication of attacking football. About all I can grasp from it really !

This is very unfair, he was actually aiming at low flying aircraft but accidently shot a tad too low. I hope we are all quite clear on this matter now. I noticed against Sheff Wed that the planes have become very confused, they were taking off AND landing in the same direction - ie over the top of SMS. Clearly there is something in this theory, maybe they needed the balls up there to help navigate? Meanwhile the stats clearly show that we have rubbish players. Time to get SCW in to give them shooting practice. and maybe teach them how to look (so they pass to our own players more often)

Ah but sometimes those shots are good, especially when the keeper's Joe Lewis. That did make me laugh.
Micky Posted 5 April, 2011 Share Posted 5 April, 2011 I think that the only assumption that I can make is that if we have had the most amount of shots on target for all 4 divisions, surely it should follow that we should have scored the most goals in all 4 divisions as well. If not - it would point to the fact that our 'finishing' is not a good as some others.
Whitey Grandad Posted 5 April, 2011 Share Posted 5 April, 2011 Then why aren't we top of the table? MK Dons scored two goals from about 3 or 4 attempts on target.
supersonic Posted 5 April, 2011 Share Posted 5 April, 2011 Here's another interesting fact for you....10 of the last 12 Saints goals scored at SMS have been scored at the Chapel End. Only Lallana v Swindon and Barnard v Yeovil were not. Is that something to look into?

We also score more in the second half, when that's the way we tend to be kicking. So it may be the end of the pitch, or it may be the stage of the game. My nipper actual reckons that saints save the goals for the chapel end so we get a better view of them (oh to be 9 again)
