JackanorySFC Posted 26 May, 2011 Share Posted 26 May, 2011 A mate of mine that owns a local cleaning business is this week pitching for the St Marys contract. His company is a medium sized one that already has some decent local contracts - however, the St Marys contract will be a massive boost to his business both in financial and prestigious terms. Anyway - why is this so good? Up until now the contract has been with a national cleaning business, my mate was approached by the club 2 days after the Wallsall game because after achieving promotion, and fitting with their long term strategy, the club have decided that all contracts should go to local City businesses. This isn't just the cleaning contract but extends to delivery vans, taxis, catering, security etc etc. Credit where it's due I think this is a great idea and one befitting a community club. Still wish they hurried up and made an announcement about ST's though!!!!

stevegrant Posted 26 May, 2011 Share Posted 26 May, 2011 Does counteract the printing story. I spoke to a mate who works for Cedar and he'd heard nothing about losing the programme contract. At this stage, assuming that rumour's rubbish.

Gemmel Posted 26 May, 2011 Share Posted 26 May, 2011 Many moons ago, I worked for a company that had a cleaning divsion and one their contracts was SFC. Knowing sweet fark all about that side of the business, when the renewal came up, I removed the Club account from the relevant sales manager and ran with it myself. I worked with a real gentleman who was the then Club secretary called Brian Truscott. We had pretty much agreed everything in principle and it was just a case of drawing up the relevant paperwork and signing it off in the following month or so. The reality is that is doesn't really matter who the operating company is, it is in the staff that carry out their duties and know exactly what to do. Our MD at the time then decided to make some cut backs (Out of the blue) and proceded to lay off half a dozen people on Christmas Eve - One of which ran the operation for us at SFC with miltary precision and was the only one who really knew how everything worked their. In the following January, I arrived for what I thought was a formality signing meeting.... wrong on two counts. It was the first day after the Grobbelar story had broken and my company car (for some reason) had tinted windows and a private plate. On parking up in the club car park I was then surrounded by press and photographers, trying to see who was in the car..... Having parked up in the far end of the car park, I milked it a little bit and moved to the very front, nearest to the reception and that seemed to send them into more of a frenzy....... They were all very disappointed when little old me got out. Anyway.... the formality of getting the signed contract was replaced by the lambasting I got for us making this guy redundant. It then turned out that the Club had approached the guy directly about running the contract himself and helped him set up a proper company etc. ..... I think I was supposed to be gutted, but I wasn't, I was chuffed to bits for this guy and the Club, who were looking after someone that had looked after them. He then ran that contract for many years and across to Saint Mary's with a fair few staff and I think he also took on other contracts. Needless to say he made huge amounts more money that he would have done working for us and the Club trusted him and looked after him well. I see still some of the guys that worked for him, still working at St Mary's.

once_bitterne Posted 26 May, 2011 Share Posted 26 May, 2011 I thought I'd seen a news article about it? There was indeed. Complete with quotes from the MD of the new company so would be surprised if it wasn't the case.

Good business sense. I used to do a lot of work for Oxford Uni and various Oxford Uni colleges they would also try to use local consultants, companies and trades wherever possible. Colinjb Posted 26 May, 2011 Share Posted 26 May, 2011 http://www.portsmouth.co.uk/news/local/east-hampshire/saints_get_signed_1_2700092 It's gone to Bishops? The same Bishops that used to sponsor the Skates? Oh for f**ks sake. I'm sure their tender price was most competitive, but for f**ks sake Nicola. The9 Posted 26 May, 2011 Share Posted 26 May, 2011 http://www.portsmouth.co.uk/news/local/east-hampshire/saints_get_signed_1_2700092 Weren't Bishops a former sponsor of the Skate Cheats ? Or was that a different Bishops ? That's still fairly local, and they do plenty of clubs already so not a big deal. LOL at the pillocks' comments on there saying "use blue ink" and "change Southampton to Scumhampton", like the printer has any kind of editorial comment. Colinjb Posted 26 May, 2011 Share Posted 26 May, 2011 Yep, these are the guys that will now be handling our programs. We are pumping money into blue territory. So much for using local firms for the benefit of OUR local community.

theyin Posted 26 May, 2011 Share Posted 26 May, 2011 Someone needs to put themselves forward as chief proof reader for our programmes. I'll bet my bottom dollar some wag will try something on. That's wag as in comedian. Pity Cedar couldn't come through on price though, #FAIL on NC's part sending it down the M27, here's hoping he gave Cedar the opportunity to come back with a better price. Good luck to the local cleaning fella though.

That's wag as in comedian. And risk a major contract with a major customer, not to mention the loss of reputation, with other clubs that they print for. I hope we've got no IBM Hardware or Software at SFC, some skate is probably busy writing some malware which causes all the systems to crash. For the record the Southampton economic area includes most of South Hampshire, so its perfectly reasonable for a supplier to come from that area. Trader Posted 26 May, 2011 Share Posted 26 May, 2011 (edited) As a former local printer, I can confirm that Bishops have been tendering suicidal prices for years and have been instrumental (at least in part) for the demise of many local printing companies. I realise that competition in industry ia perceived as good, but quite honestly I've often wondered how they have survived let alone flourished. Must be the Wal-Mart approach - stack 'em high and sell 'em cheap. Edited 26 May, 2011 by Trader

The impression I get from those comments is one of "Haha, we've got one over you scummers!" without actually realising it's just a printing business that probably doesn't care who they print for. Besides, times must be desperate when you're clinging to a printing firm to do the mickey-taking of your nearest rivals...
EastleighSoulBoy Posted 26 May, 2011 Share Posted 26 May, 2011 23 home games, at least, next season. Times that by this season's programme price (£3.00) equals £69 towards our STs this year. Thanks for identifying how I could cover some of the increase in our ST prices!

JRM Posted 28 May, 2011 Share Posted 28 May, 2011 This. Bishops are ruthless when it comes to pricing. I wonder if the saving will be passed on in the cost of the programme? I'd like to see us follow carlisle's example, cut out a lot of the rubbish currently in the programme going back to a more traditional style and charge £1 for it

Would be interesting to know by how much the printed sales dropped last season. I only bought one home programme, Walsall, as a souvenir, the rest i read online.
