Evening Games at The Dell.

Memories......as a young lad going there in the 70's with my old man and Grandad the place was such a great place on night matches. Seeing the night sky lit up walking down Hill Lane by those iconic flood lights were just the start to a great nights entertainment!

The places oozed atmosphere and the smell of cigar smoke and beer in the West Stand concourse are one of favourite ever smells!

Memories please?

my first ever game was a night game at the dell in the late nineties. It was a 2-2 draw against Everton, I remember at the time being petrified of the noise. Now ive gotten older and uglier, it's one I'd my best memories of football.

**** me that place was different class.

Stuffing Champions elect Derby County 5-0 in The League Cup - back then nobody put out weakened teams, brightened up a pretty poor start to our life in Div 2 (old money).

Anderlecht in UEFA Cup - so near yet so far.

WBA in FA Cup replay in our 76 cup winning run. I discovered how it feels to be a sardine. Pretty sure The Milton was way over subscribed!!

A bit of a cheat for the next 1 as Í wasn't actually there - Dream Team Lawrie & Bally's triumphant return to clear away the gloom and depression of the branfart era with a thumping 4-2 in the snow over Liverpool which I watched on Sky!!

And last but by no means least - probably my favourite ever night at The Old Girl - Mick Channon's Testimonial just after our 76 Cup win. Nothing to do with the match - but the atmosphere will never be beaten.

The one thing that I remember about evening games at the dell is thay you could smell the linement that the players rubbed into their muscles, but for 3:00 kick off you couldn't.

Best game for me West Brom in 76 FA Cup Reply and Man City in 79 League Cup.

Blimey I can also remember all those games - the atmosphere at night was special! There was something of an edge around The Dell at night - dark corners but very bright floodlights. All time favourite night was Channon's testemonial...but I think that was because of the events the weekend before.

Remember Glasgow Rangers at The Dell one night game in The Archers...hmmm not the friendlieat of visiting fans!

Can anyone remember when we played Oldham in the Texaco cup, and at half time the pitch was set up for a race involving 400 metre runner Donna Murray. While the race was on some bird leapt out of the Milton, and joined in, with stewards chasing her, the whole thing turned in to a complete farce.

The first game I ever went to was against Rangers in the Texaco Cup - we won 2-0, one of our goals being a comical own-goal by Rangers' left back. I was in the Milton, so didn't see the visiting supporters close up! I was at the Derby 5-0 match too; they'd just signed Francis Lee, who wandered around the pitch looking (and playing) like a beached whale.

A favourite memory is the Sheffield Wednesday FA Cup replay in 1984, which I watched from under the East Stand rather than the Milton. And, of course, the Friday night 2-0 against Liverpool the same year.

If I remember rightly, the ground record game against Man Utd was a mid week game. Amazing night. I was able to lift my feet off the ground in the queue outside the Milton and be carried toward the turnstile. Did not see too much inside to be honest but the atmosphere alone made it worth being there.

Was this around 1992/3 time? If so, it was also my first game. I thought it was 1-1 but was quite young so could be wrong...

Can't remember the year - early 70s - Man City were top of the table. Big Ron got a couple as we won 2-0 against the odds. The image of him hanging in the air with the floodlights behind him before banging it in with his head will live with me forever.

Another great thread, similar to the Anderlect one. Always think that many overrate the atmosphere at the Dell for daytime games, but night matches were always buzzing, saw loads of mad games one way or another there over the year off the top of my head:

Oldham 1990 - Andy Ritchie

Bolton 1992 - Barry Horne

Liverpool 1994 - Le Tissier hatrick.

Spurs 1995 - Ronnie Rosenthal

Newcastle 1995 - 1-0 with 5 mins to go, winning 3-1.

As a nipper, used to get pie and chips up at Teds in Bedford Place, then walk down Milton Road, floodlights glaring away. Definitely a different feel about night games at the Dell.

who could ever forget that one ..! 0-3 down with 17 mins left to play ...what a comeback!

Doubt that that game could ever be beat for atmosphere

Like another poster, the abiding memory for me wouuld be the smell of tobacco and the mistiness surrounding the Dell during evening games due to the comparatively low Lux rating of the floodlights

another memorable game was the 5-4 win over Leeds in the League Cup when the lights went out and Derek Reeves scored his 5th at around 22.20 (from a 1930 kick off)

Didnt get home until nearfly midnight and my Mum was worried sick (no mobile phones in those days)

going back to the Forest 3-3 draw, there used to be a man in a white coat, walking round the running track, dispensing Hot Bovril from a tank on his back.

He became so engrossed in the game that he failed to notice someone had turned the tap on at the back of his tank and he bercame immersed in a pool of hot, sticky, bovine liquiid!!

And the following Season in the evening too being 0-2 down against them with 2 minutes to go... Newcastle fans thinking they'd finally beaten us at home after so long only for Madison (i think) to score on 88 and Le Tiss to score a screaming stoppage time equaliser and the Dell erupted!

That was a Saturday game (featured on MOTD) on 18/1/97.

Is that the game when Dennis Hollywood unleashed what could only be described as an assualt on Mike Summerbee. I remember Summerbee yelping as the tackle went in. To be fair he wasn't rolling around, he got up pretty quickly. Hollywood wasn't even booked.

Leeds 79' league cup semi final - I was 7, in teh Milton road end on a box with My dad...Still vaguely remember Terry Curran scoring in a 1-0 win that sent us to Wembley.....Other matches that stick in the mind are from the later era - a game against Spurs we won 2-0 I think with Beattie scoring both -It was bloomin cold !!Also a testimonial for Alan Ball involving Vancouver Whitecaps !! Brucie Grobelaar was in goal for them !!

The Mick Channon game was also the one for me, what great timing to have a testamonial. We lived in Freemantle and on the walk up to the Dell you could hear the tannoy much clearer than inside. Night games were always special, especially cup replays.

It was amazing that that one didn't make Matty's top 50 goals DVD - one of the most perfectly struck goals from distance that I've ever seen in my entire life.

That was my first memory of evening (always Tuesday) matches at the Dell. That and the Glasgow Rangers two legged tie in the Texaco Cup, where we beat them by some rediculous aggregate.

First evening game at the Dell I saw was WBA in 1967 - Docker Walker scored his one and only Saints goal to bring it back to 2-2 after being 2 down.

As a 14-year old I'd just started going in the Milton on my own; we played Fulham a few days earlier in a Saturday game and that was pretty good, but the atmosphere in evening games was something else.

I can still see Docker standing there with one arm up in the air after he scored - bit like Tony Adams appealing for off-side come to think of it.

The same week! (well, Friday and following Tuesday) The high point of 40-odd years of fandom - so far...

Worst eveing game memories - Ronny bloody Rosenthal in 1995 and the Newcastle Fairs cup game in 1969/70. Still remember the silence after they equalised and everybody realised that they'd go through on away goals

I am hoping someone with extremely good recent SFC knowledge can help me fully identify my first Saints game, I remember it vividly but cannot place a date on it and would love to know.

Here's what I know about it:

It was at the Dell

An Evening fixture

Against Crystal Palace, would've been between '98 and when we left.

I don't think we won

Anyone got any ideas?

Sheffield Wednesday in a FA Cup quarter final replay, 83? I think we won 5-2, we already knew that we would be playing Everton at Highbury if we won. We went behind & came back to totally outclass them. The atmosphere was fantastic. "If your'e all going to Highbury clap your hands"

That nearly put me off Saints. Still think Grobbelaar threw that game, far too easily beaten near-post.

Have to agree with you there.Goals 2, 3 and 4 very suspect. 5 and 6 the game was already lost so maybe he was just crap.

Also a great game, can't remember what competition but think League Cup, against ManU where we (I think) lost 2-1, with Danny Wallace hitting the bar late on.

Don't recall us playing Palace between 98-2001. Amongst my favourites is a Monday night game against Man Utd which we won 1-0, fairly certain it was the 97/98 season and Paul Jones put it what was quite possibly the best performance of his career.

V Man City. Pouring with rain, Steve Williams and Bally bossing the game from the middle. Slide tackles coming in from 20 yards, mud n snot everywhere. There was one incident right in the centre circle when it seemed like 15 players were in there scrambling for the ball covered in mud. you could hardly tell which side they were on ! I think that was televised as well.

Think mine have all been done: Bilbao, Rangers, Newcastle in the Texaco? Cup, Channon testimonial. Also saw Sunderland play at the Dell midweek in a sky blue kit early 70's and remember Jim Montgomery being outstanding in goal for them, haven't got a clue of the score!

Palace game was a 1-0 win on 27/8/97. Kevin Davies' 1st goal for Saints.

Same season and again Davies got the only goal. Monday night game live on Sky. Davies then got crocked by Gary Neville and missed most of the rest of the season.

I remember a game against Aston Villa on a freezing cold night during the mid 90’s. We had been leading 1-0 when Villa who were in trouble at the time equalised quite late on through Houghton. Thought we were heading for a draw but then Teale gave a free kick away about 20-25 yards out in the 90th minute and Le Tiss scored another great late winner which brought the Dell back into life!

Anyone off here that was at the Oldham 3-0 defeat in about '93, Benali scored the classic own goal?

Was that the diving header? Remember that well.

Newcastle 1-0 to 3-1 and the liverpool game are definite standouts, as is THAT Barry Horne moment, the ZDS semi final against West Ham too. Was definitely a different experience going to evening games at the Dell though i do think at st marys the Saints Pompey game in the carling cup comes close.

West Ham was technically the AREA semi final i think 2-1 win, we then played Chelsea over 2 legs in the area final taking loads to stamford bridge for the 3-1 2nd leg brilliant stuff.

Bring back the ZDS and the Anglo-Italian CUPS!

Ah, found memories. Just reminiscing now and remembering how, quite frankly, disgusting and horrible the ground was. But it was our horrible, disgusting ground and I always felt just a tad more confident for home games at The Dell than I've ever been since we've been at SMS. In some respects, when we battled relegation for so many seasons during the 90's, I felt as if we were almost invincible as long as we stayed there. I guess we were :(

Anyway, no particularly fond memory has sprung up immediately but I do remember an evening game vs Leeds (Michael Bridges hattrick) and Mark Hughes "scoring" with a bullet volley (I think) which smashed through the net and into the advertising hoardings. Still annoys me now that we never got a goal for that and not much was ever made of it afterwards!

Your right it would not acceptable today, although Fratton is still as bad.

Funny thing was we stuck at a 7.30pm kick off for years when others had moved to 7.45pm.

Oh yeah, 7.30 KO's! In fact, had we have kicked off a little later, I might have made that Leeds game on time! My taxi didn't show up that evening so I had to order another, which I insisted, as a rather bolshy 18-year-old, that it was free... which they agreed to. Despite the result, I did feel a sense of achievement with that. I think that's also the night that an Argentine striker called Cordone played for Newcastle and Sunderland won 2-1 at St.James in the pouring rain.. if my memory serves me correctly!?

The Dell under lights was always about cup games -

76 WBA in the Cup- 4-0 2-0 up before I got in

76 Marseilles 4-0 Christ saints in europe !

79 Leeds league cup semi 1-0 which meant we went to wembley. Terry Currans only saints goal i think remember the Leeds fans on the way home trying to run our mini bus off the road only for us to launch party 7 their way

82ish Man City league cup replay 4-0 dreadful rain throughout but still some great goals

84ish Sheff Wed 5-1 after the 0-0 replay when we took 10000 to Hillsbourough for the televised match

92 Bolton 3-2 Hornes amazing goal still my favourite goal at the Dell last minute equaliser only for him to score again for the winner in extra time!

Mid eighties Man U 4-1 league cup Ron Atkinson OBE Out before easter and he was - 2 from Le tiss off the bench
