ladysaint Posted 28 November, 2008 Share Posted 28 November, 2008 Went to the Freemantle pub last night and must say how impressed I was with Jan & Mark Wotte who were accompanied by Olly Lancashire and Lloyd James. It was a very interesting evening. A few things of interest is that they do firmly believe that Lallana and Surman will still be here after January, and they are hoping to keep Cork until the end of season, Dyer will be returning from his loan period. Lots more info and will try to remember more later. If they do visit your pub/area I would recommend you go along as they seem to be trying to rekindle the spirit of Southampton Football Club and also doing it totally independently, i.e. its their choice to visit the fans not the board. I also took the opportunity to speak to Dean Gorre and again was so impressed with him he assured me that exciting times lie ahead with the style of football and what this young team can achieve, he seems a great motivator and really hope that he is offered a contract with the club. Many thanks to Andy the landlord of the Freemantle for hosting the evening, thoroughly enjoyed it and thanks to Jan, Mark, Olly and Lloyd for attending. Also got the impression that Jack is loving it here.... so fingers crossed. Jan also commented on the Reading game, saying that he was almost moved to tears not just with the performance, but also with the response of the 4000 that travelled up. I spoke to Jan after. He said that any "over-play", one pass too many is not something he has expressly told them to do. Its just that the lads are enjoying playing. Its just their enthusiasm. He said that opposition managers were genuinely encouraging and full of praise for our play. He spoke particularly about McCarthy, Coleman & Martinez. I briefly mentioned Morgan as he spoke of Llalan & Drew, and he agreed that the kid sure could pass a football. I got the feeling he rates him very very highly. Briefly spoke to Dean Gorre too...Asked him if there was a chance we could get his son on loan from Man U but he was not sure Fergie was prepared to take him out from under wraps just yet. He would try though as he felt the experience would benefit his development :-) In summary, I hope people get up off the sofa and get themselves back down to SMS and support the team. Jan and the guys don't need the politics. They just want to play and do us proud. Thats what all those there and all saints fans want. The spirit of Southampton, IMO, is living on in the team at present, its among us fans where we need it to rise up again. I think a "COYR" is called for!! I still think this side will come good - come on you saints! I agree there are exciting times ahead for our club and if we want to keep our best players we have to do our part and support them. If we can add another 10k to the gate at SMS this will make one hell of a difference. We have a young exiciting team, with the promise of more entertaining, exciting football to come. With the credit crunch and the Lowe Haters etc, it is going to be difficult to get people to part with their money but in the long run it will be money well spent to keep this young and exciting team together. I have met many managers over the years and other than WGS I cant say I have been impressed as much as I was last night with Jan & Mark and what they are trying to achieve at SFC. Did say that Lee Holmes has now started training again. Interesting feedback, but just to put the record straight Gorre was never a Dutch international to the best of my knowledge. Unless I am very much mistaken he has also never played in the Championship, his playing days in England were restricted to League 1 and 2 appearances. No criticism intended, but its a bit like claiming JP is a top Dutch coach when we all know almost all of his experience has been at lower levels than the Dutch Eridivisie. Hopefully JP and his team will be rolling up to a pub in Calne soon to discuss Saints with me and the rest of the Calne Saints Supporters Club. Some of the pubs are quite small so should be plenty of room:)
ladysaint Posted 28 November, 2008 Author Share Posted 28 November, 2008 There are ways of increasing the gates significantly and the club are trying by reducing the ticket prices for the Forest game and if they like what they see they hopefully will return, perhaps not to every game but if they return again within the season thats something. I have made suggestions before i.e. every season ticket holder bring a friend for free and fill the Chapel end up. Grandparents day, grandchildren can bring their grandparents along as a Xmas present for £5.00 each grandparent for a nominated match. You have to think out the box to get the gates increased without upsetting the ST holders. I buy my ST to support the club and my team and if someone gets in cheapers for a couple of games per season to boost the crowd all well and good, 3 points is more important to me than £3 in my pocket. Gordon Mockles Posted 28 November, 2008 Share Posted 28 November, 2008 Certainly is, they appear to be making more of an effort than our two chairmen, although they probably wouldn't be as well received which stops that idea dead in it's tracks! You reckon? LOL Shame I missed it. My local too. Never say no to a pint and chatting football. What’s this about Dean Gorre’s son too? At United. Does anyone have any more info. on him?! Is Dean Gorre likely to join the coaching staff?! We’d do well to have some back-up and support to Jan in the first team, although isn’t it all one team, with the seamless transition and all that?! Or has that changed? Not sniping as it sounds sarky, sensible enquiry. I’ve not had the chance to meet Jan yet (or Mark) but I’m really liking the way they conduct themselves and their frank, Dutch openness. It’s refreshing after the last joke of a manager we had (full circle in fact, an allegedly alcoholic manager that abused his position and did so much damage, to a committed Dutchman, so eager to succeed in our league that he (allegedly) bought himself out of his old contract and works on extremely limited resources)

We got a letter of warning once from our box (in the earlier St Mary's days) when Saints scored against Pompey, and we fired a cork (from a fizzed up bottle of champagne) at the Pompey fans. THEY WENT MENTAL! Clambering over people to get to the lads responsible. I don't feel that the situation the club is currently in is all bad, as the younger lads learn to play with each other week in week out, we may well start seeing more results go our way. Top man, top post.... finally something to read on this excuse of a forum. thank you.
