Just been reading the great interview in the Mail with JWP:

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-3025057/James-Ward-Prowse-dream-bend-like-Beckham-barrister-s-son-sets-bar-high-Southampton.html

The lad comes across so well and is a credit to his family and the club. He has bags of talent and will be a great player for us.

Some of the 'forum experts' on here that have been slating the lad would do well to take note of what people in the game think of JWP. Most seem to rate him so highly and unlike Shaw or Chambers he has not chosen to jump ship at the earliest opportunity.

He seems to have been around forever yet is still only 20!

Arguably a better talker than player based on what he has done as opposed to the undoubted potential.

Massive 18months for him to kick on. Still not a starter in our best XI.

He's 20. Good footballers peak about 26/27. We have some very impatient 'supporters' at Saints.

He is a good player. But despite 70 odd games doesn't have a best position, is woeful defensively and doesn't contribute in attack.

Good technical player but his ceiling IMO is far lower than the likes of Shaw, Chambers, AOC etc because he has some basic (mostly physical) flaws as a PL midfielder.

Also, can you call yourself a free kick specialist having never scored one for your club?

If his game grows to match his PR and image then great.

you really are a ray of sunshine saint charlie aren't you? We're having an incredible season, we have lads like JWP that are growing into really good players and do not appear to have huge egos and yet you're still not happy.

Of course the England setup is wrong about JWP and the type of player he will become and folks in the business who say he is a real talent.....you're an amazing judge of a player, far more so than the pros in the game.

I pity you, I really do and I hope you have your supply of diapers ready for the summer again.

So what? He is 20 years old and playing for a team that after 30 games is 6th in the Premier League. You'd struggle to name many players of his age that would be first choice in such a team. He has played 67 games for a strong Premier League side, Schneiderlin and Lallana for example when the same age hadn't played a single Premier League game.

Not every Academy player will reach the heights that others have, thats all.

He does so many interviews, and I think it just puts more pressure on him.

Absolutely brilliant season for Saints, but personally for him its been average I think and no clear improvement from last year.

"doesn't have a best position" - what of you mean by this? And so what?

He has one of the best minutes per assist ratios in the Premier League, I'd say that is a good attacking contribution.

"woeful defensively" is also extremely harsh.

Good technical player but his ceiling IMO is far lower than the likes of Shaw, Chambers, AOC etc because he has some basic (mostly physical) flaws as a PL midfielder.

He has actually bulked up quite a lot this season.

Also, can you call yourself a free kick specialist having never scored one for your club?

Until this season Lambert has been first choice on direct free kicks on goal. Ward-Prowse's delivery from free kicks and corners is superb, it can still be a good set piece even if the end result isn't a goal.

When you see him linked with being in an England senior squad do you feel that would be earned based on performances for Saints?

I think despite being significantly younger he is a better player and offers more to England than the likes of Fabian Delph, Jack Coback and Tom Cleverly who have all been called up by England recently as central midfielders.

Ha, ringing endorsement for the lad. Delph is certainly a better central midfielder than JWP right now and is a lot more powerful.

Don't get me wrong, he is a tidy player and will surely have a good career. I just get the feeling people (including JWP himself) are expecting him to suddenly turn into a world class central midfielder.

When I watch him I see a player who can pick a pass and has lovely technique but who in a men's senior match you can't play as a deep lying playmaker as he doesn't have an ounce of ball winning ability and is far too easy to run beyond. Even Hazard won a 20-80 in JWPs favour that nearly cost us at Chelsea.

Is his future in a more advanced position? Not for me unless he suddenly develops either more power, a bit of a trick to beat a man, or shows he could get 5-7 open play goals in a season. The Germany goal was nice and a good start but its not like for us he has loads of chances and takes up great offensive positions.

He has probably done more interviews than any other Saints player this season, and probably more in his career than he has made appearances.

Hopefully he can develop into the player that he is being hyped to be and that he is hyping himself to be. Beckham comparisons fuel the hype and add pressure.

Only if he suddenly becomes another Beckham, Lampard or Gerrard.

If you are predicting it then you are as guilty as anyone of over hyping the guy.

Saint Charlie, I really think you should focus on the positives. He's young and he's got an fantastic personality plus he has access to world class coaching and facilities, with the right guidance I think he will blossom into a world class player

Your summary may not appeal to those who want this lad to be as good as they hope - but your analysis is right. JWP is certainly a confident, self-promoting type, but he doesn't have the game to bring it off. I wonder what Harry Reed thinks about the fuss being made about JWP compared to his low key profile. The irony is Reed has enough qualities to go much further in the game.

There is still time for JWP to develop.....goals aren't the only measure of success in a midfielder. I always felt ** Beckham was greatly over-rated.

Statistical note;

David Beckham didn't score his first international goal until his 20th game for England.

He scored his second ......in his 37th England game.

In 115 games for England, he managed only 17 goals. Beckham's goals were often more spectacular than they were frequent.

** As far as career / goals......Beckham wasn't in the same class as MLT - who played in the same period in Prem.

..........................................Prem apps only.............Career total

Beckham (MU) 1992-2003....265 apps........62 goals........523 apps......97 goals.

MLT....(Saints) 1992-2002... 313 apps. ....124 goals........558 apps.....213 goals.

Experts talking about JWP and his technical prowess always reminds me of Duncan Fletcher talking about how technically brilliant Ian Bell is as a batsman.

Actually I think we could do with combining Reed and JWP into one player Reeds tenacity and physicality mixed with JWP technically passing (I've seen JWP rake a ball cross field and drop on a team mates foot several times) would make one hell of a DM

Beckham was far more than goals. He took his obvious technical ability and had a massive influence on matches from open play (in addition to tangible set play outcomes) despite other flaws.

If JWP gets anywhere near that level then he will have done well. Very well.

To be fair to Charlie, he moans about everything and everyone, not just JWP.

What is your opinion of him? Do you think he is a world class player in the making? Which position? Would he be treated the same if he wasn't an academy poster boy, or does that get him some leeway? Or maybe adds pressure?

He seems like a nice down to Earth lad with his head screwed on and is obviously determined to make the most of his ability. You can't fault his attitude.

But I've seen very little in his 60/70 odd appearances for Saints to suggest he is going to be a 'great' player for us.

I appreciate he is still young and has time on his side, but the worrying thing is he doesn't seem to be improving, if anything he is going backwards.

I really hope he does push on to the levels predicted for him by the 'experts', but at the moment I just don't see it.

Our problem is we have been spoiled over the last few years and expect every academy player to develop as early as Theo, Bale, Shaw etc and if they don't we don't rate them!

Or rather we expect them all to reach that level at all. Rather than just being a good player.

Then when they don't people are suprised or frustrated.

Who was the last Academy player who was just a solid PL pro? Matt Oakley?

David Beckham was an absolutely excellent player, he was rated at exactly the right level for his ability. He went to Madrid for 25 million at a time when Zidane was worth 45.

If JWP gets anywhere close then he will play a LOT of games for England.

Sounded like JWP was one of the better players today. Clearly needs time in the role ahead of Wanyama and Schneiderlin. I think he will become a goal threat he just needs to get going.

I like him. He's under lots of pressure and maybe doesn't always have the best games but he has a lot of years to improve and under good coaching he should. Sometimes frustrating but with patience we should get a great player out of him.

Clearly he's rubbish. Weak, no best position, doesn't score, can't tackle.

Seems the people who matter can see he's only 20.

BTW, for those who like to compare him with Harry Reed, there is no comparison in my view. JWP is currentlyhead and shoulders the better player. They're the same age, and of the two three Saints Managers in the Premier League, the current England U21 Manager ( who has made him Captain when there are players almost 3 years older in the team)and, it seems, the current England Manager all rate him higher.

We should be celebrating him, not knocking a kid who is still learning in the White hot glare of central midfield in the EPL.

LOL Harry Reed has had to fight for a place with Morgan, Victor and Jack Cork over the last few seasons not many youngsters are going to get a game ahead of those three. Don't think Koeman has ever called JWP outstanding (unlike Reed after the Everton game) plus I'd take anything Hodgson says with a pinch of salt.

Currently JWP is an AM that doesn't score goals, rarely gets beyond our CF and is sited as a deadball specialist who hasn't scored a single free kick this season. As a DM Reed looks far more accomplished than JWP as an AM.

One of the differences between Roy Hodgson's assessment of JWP and those who have seen each of his 24 appearances for Saints this season is that Roy's hype doesn't measure up with what we have seen him do on the pitch. As for Faz' claim about JWP being head and shoulders over Harry Reed....we will see; Reed has the goods to be a better DM than JWP has as an AM, the only position he has a chance of performing in. Reed's played a handful of games; JWP has nearly 70 appearances. This debate needs to be revisited in a year or two.
