There's an amber one where I am, so we're battoning down the hatches, saying goodbye to loved ones and praying to our Gods to be spared.

Nowhere near a ban yet in Lancashire, NWW say the reservoirs are above average for the time of year as we have had 90% of the expected rainfall so far this year.

I fitted one in our conservatory/dining room four years ago. It works well either heating or cooling. A coefficient of performance of nearly 4, or so they claim although I don’t believe it.

It was from Amazon. Was described as having cooling fins - the same as a fridge - on the back. It neglected to say they were made of cardboard and whilst it did pump water around you had to freeze two small ice packs (about the size of ice lollies!) to chill the water, a feat that never actually happened.

That’s an air cooler not an air conditioner.

So, we know the climate has changed, we know it's getting hotter and likely to continue to do so.  Year after year now we have hosepipe bans followed by announcement of droughts.  What is the Government doing about it?  Apparently we have just the one desalination plant on mainland UK and that barely ever runs because it is too expensive (it is located on the Thames).  Why not take a leaf out of the Middle East's book and make use of the enormous abundance of water that surrounds our island to mitigate the effects of the hot weather?  Or is that thinking too much outside of the box?

I think the issue is the huge amount of cost it takes to run these plants. Plus it'll taste of dead migrants.

Compared to the cost of not running them and having no water?

Besides, they could be owned by the Government and the cost recouped by 'selling' the water to the water companies that have run out (assuming they remain privately owned).

We just need to improve how we store the rain that does fall over winter. There's plenty of water available but we don't have sufficient infrastructure to capture and store it efficiently enough to make sure it's available when we need it.

We haven't built any new major PWS reservoirs in this country for about 35 years. But I'm sure it's just pure coincidence that happens to be around the same time the water industry was sold off to private interests who are more concerned about paying huge bonuses to their directors than they are about providing an adequate service to bill-payers.

Yep, it's ridiculous that we sold off our utilities. It was obvious to anyone with half a brain that private enterprises wouldn't provide necessary infrastructure upgrades which don't provide a ROI. Mental.

Some of that is incredible. Tell you something else the red onions are delicious. Sweeter than we get at home. The missus and I had a Calabrian salad as a starter earlier and it was basically Calabrian onions Tomatoes with olive oil, it was fantastic didn’t need anything else.

What’s the overall cost of your trip been like? My limited understanding is it’s been a poor part of the country and tourism only seems to have picked up recently so wondering if there’s still good value to be had.

Yes still good value. Had a fantastic meal in Tropea today for 3 for about €60, taxis are expensive as is the case in most of italy but still cheaper than other parts of Italy we’ve been to. It’s peak season so busy, lots of German, French, Italians and a few but not too many Brits. I reckon if you came in June or September you’d get yourself a right deal and temperature would be perfect. Unfortunately we’re still restricted by school holidays but will come back in a few years time for sure. We’ve already booked Sardinia again for next summer which is probably my favourite place on earth
