If footy headlines are reporting it I have no doubt it’s the actual the shirt, but I’m 99% the images are the same as from the other leak, just cut out from the previous background.

Not belittling your efforts by any means, but if you can come up with these designs (even those copying earlier kits), why can’t the manufacturers, or the club adopt something better than the shit they’ve agreed ?

Agree. There's no reason not to use the full-colour logo on any kit, unless you're some smart-arse tone-deaf twat that thinks a monochrome logo is somehow cool or trendy. Does any other club engage in such self-indulgent stupidity?

Whilst that away kit design is a bit of harmless fun, the illegible monochromatic logo and shit-fest back-panel detract from what could be a decent quirky kit.

Aaaaand.... Relax....

All a matter of opinion but for me the mono colour crest is the least of my concerns. The design and the ridiculous back panel render discussion about the crest pointless.

the design is more important, after who will be wearing it of course. Get the team right and I don’t suppose we’ll care too much if the change kit is them playing in their underpants.

(In answer to Trousers question I’m pretty sure others have done this with the badge it, but can’t recall who or when).

Chelsea? Think they do it pretty often. I think a lot of the clubs, certainly the top English clubs (Arsenal, City, Liverpool, United), have been using mono crests in recent years

Fucking hideous. Sees that awful wave effort from the Ralph/Jones/Selles relegation season and raises it. Third kit wants to be decent or it’s a no from me this year, won’t be buying the above or the 1 star boring home shirt.

The simple solution is to not buy it. But I remember similar disgust at the pink shirt before everyone decided they liked it after all and it still sold out. FWIW I loved last years kits, this season home is ok and that away is truly disgusting! (Also for full colour badge and stripes on the back)

That would have sold tens of thousands. Imagine the yellow version as the third kit. Genuinely baffled how the club fuck it up so much year after year.

This is where FAB should come into play and rattle a few at the club, if they have anything about them or serve any purpose.

But they probably won’t. Imagine they’re too inclined to just nod along to whatever they’re told, and be grateful the club listen to them on whether the concourse should stock Quavers and Wagon Wheels.

There were a few on display at the SF, looked really good. Put a lot of modern efforts to shame.

Even Rupert Lowe invited supporters input in the kit selection. Possibly a lot easier when it’s produced in house, but I doubt we’d end up with the crap we’re served up with if fans views are canvassed.

For me a feature on a striped shirt is ‘stripes on the back?’. If that’s not available then I’d sadly be inclined to scrap the stripes altogether.

Didn’t some bloke on here design our kits once?

Not sure, I recall Gecko did some badge designs. He might have been involved in the shirts at one point.

I feel seen. 🤣

And somewhat chastened, but I do still like the idea a colour block kit.

Pretty sure he designed the kits for the 06/07 season.

The red block on the back. Why o why do Saints do it? It looked absolutely shit at the back.

Ditto! Every season for the last 10 years or so  we get a plain back , every year that happens I don’t get a shirt, just my lil protest. I use my remake of the old rank xerox one that was reinvented. Now that’s the only kit that we should alternate from proper stripes  in my opinion, just to freshen things up now and then. Away kits , for me yellow and blue it’s just a colour that obviously has history for us but more importantly those colours could mean we just need two kits each season, design can be a bit inventive for that aslong as it’s something people wd want to buy.Not against a two year cycle either maybe change home and away alternatively aswell so fans aren’t having to fork too much each season.

Far too much I agree with, and common sense expressed here to register with those making decisions.

If we can’t have a full striped kit then I’d like the Rank Xerox to become the standard default kit. With the sash reserved for anniversaries!

Away kit - for me should be amber and black, but accept yellow and blue seems indelibly set for many. Don’t mind if that is varied with navy/yellow (as 2010/11) or stripes as last season.

Third kit - I like the red and black, or sky/navy (again, Rank Xerox era)but should give some licence for the club to bugger about and vary it. Within reason. So no Japanese wallpaper designs or psychedelic ‘far out, man’ crap (2022/3 and this year).

Two year cycle, good idea, but commercially the club and manufacturers probably wouldn’t suppory that.

When have we ever worn amber and black? I'm late 40s and to me this colour scheme means nothing in the context of SFC.

As far as I’m aware through the 60’s and early 70’s until 1973/4 when it changed to yellow and blue.

I was told in the 70’s that the amber and black was chosen as this was the colours of the Hampshire Regiment, although later read that we borrowed a kit from the regiment that was burgundy and blue. No idea of the source of this although Fitzhugh might expand on the story.

Yellow and Blue was nothing unique to Saints and just followed a 70’s fashion trend at the time. This had previously been the away strip of Man Utd, Chelsea and Everton (and they’re the only ones I can recall, probably more) in the previous couple of seasons.

I’ve tried finding footage of Saints in amber and black, but the majority of clips are black and white. This includes away v Man Utd (Ron Davies in his prime), Arsenal on Boxing Day (Eric Martin’s best game ?) , and York City in Cup.

It looks like a bib. All the time, I just wondered why they were wearing bibs. It's awful.

Fair enough, I had no idea.

Interesting it has never been revived even once by the various kit brands in the intervening 50 years. Not even as a third kit. Hence my curiosity.

I've lived through pure fashion biege/cream/pink kits, I have gone along with "Solent green" being a thing (loved it second time round too) there's been spitfire and other sea references. But never amber and black. Maybe we just don't want to look like Wolves or Hull.

I think the fact that our greatest day (itself 50 years ago and before even I was born) was in yellow and blue means that will be our go-to scheme for the foreseeable.

Yes, you’re right it’s not been revived. Probably because it has been supplanted by the yellow/blue combination, especially among you youngsters!

I doubt the club will look to have an amber kit along with a yellow/ blue creation the same season.

I’d forgotten the Solent green. I liked it second time round, kit was quite nice. In fact we’ve had a couple of decent white away or third shirts (Wembley 2017, and the FA Cup shirt v Coventry a few years back). Im not against the changes and experiments (within reason), but just don’t fuck up the home kit please !

To be very pedantic. It was old gold and black rather than amber. You can see an example here 1970-1972 I guess one reason for not reviving it is that the shorts would be the same colour as the home kit. So it would work perfectly if we went back to blue shorts.

I can see the similarity but don’t recall it being called old gold at the time. Wolves were known to wear ‘old gold’ but our second strip was largely described as amber.

Isn’t it league requirement to have a block colour on the back?

In "Saints a complete record" for the 1950-51 season it refers to an FA Cup game at Roker Park "Saints wore amber jerseys and black shorts for the first time. They borrowed the kit from the Hampshire Regiment."

But in the programme for the 1963 FA Cup semi-final it refers to Southampton wearing old gold shirts. So I guess amber and old gold were regarded as interchangeable terms.

No, that seems to have become a bit of a myth somehow as we hear it a lot but multiple teams ignore it each year. Stoke have a fully striped back this season, and even with the suggestion it’s a premier league rule Sunderland and Bournemouth don’t seem too bothered .

Yet Bournemouth have managed to avoid it, as have others

Yes because they have two dark colours for stripes and can make their names and numbers easily visible.

If you’ve got white in your stripes you need a block.

Aren’t black numbers and lettering prominent on red and white then ?

Sunderland didn’t last season, and leaks would suggest they’re not this season either.

Don’t see how a black number wouldn’t make that a non issue anyway.
