Colin Clarke. Hat-trick on his debut. Opening match of the 1986/7 season at the Dell. Smashed QPR 5-1, who had a very young David Seaman in goal. My first ever Saints game. I was hooked and thought it would be like that every week. Spoiler: it isn't Edited yesterday at 08:54 by Midfield_General 1 4

That's a very odd point to make though - if that's the one they're making. It's not uncommon for resuscitation efforts to go for up to 20 minutes, sometimes more.

Spoiler: it isn't I went to that game, although it wasn't my first, so I knew we wouldn't win every week. However, if you only went to home games, as I did in 1986, it sure felt like it as we beat QPR, Liverpool, Newcastle and Spurs in the first couple of months. Obviously it didn't last. Was Colin Clarke any good? I always felt that he needed about 6 or 7 chances to score. Luckily for him, we created a lot of chances and thus he got 20 goals. Would a better striker would have got 30+ or have I done him a disservice? 1

I was 10 so I probably wasn’t analysing it very deeply but I loved him. Retrospectively I think he was probably quite an old fashioned, proper 80s centre forward. A bit uncultured by today’s standards but put himself about, gave central defenders problems and could score with his head or his feet. And I think you’re right that he probably missed a few, but in the top division he scored 20 in his first season with us and 16 in his second, which is pretty damn good by anyone’s standards. Clarke, Rideout, Shearer, Ostenstadt, Davies, Beatts, Pahars, Lambert, Pelle, Ings… we really have had some quality no 9s over the time I’ve been a fan. Maybe Larin will bang in a brace on Saturday and go on to join the list Edited 17 hours ago by Midfield_General 2

According to a co-pilot search (so probably wrong), the last Saints player to score a hattrick was Rickie Lambert in 2012. We are definitely overdue one.....
WALK DMC Posted 16 hours ago Posted 16 hours ago Interesting stat ? We've kept more clean sheets (3) in the handful of games that we've played 4 at the back than the 2 (Swansea/Millwall) clean sheets achieved with 5 at the back over nearly 25 games. The clean sheets with 4 at the back are the the two recent games v Stoke & Sheff U and the home game in September against Pompey. It does make you wonder why both Will & Tonda were so stubborn in giving it an extended go. Of course, it may be absolutely nothing to do with formation, just the fact that Mssrs Manning, Bazunu and Wood have been removed from the team ............

Lighthouse Posted 14 hours ago Posted 14 hours ago I still count Pelle against Sunderland. It's absolute horse poo that one of them is given as a Bridcutt o.g. it was obviously going in without his involvement.

We were in Itchen Block 10 parallel to the goal and can’t agree with you there, it only crossed the line with Bridcutt’s fumble.

Seemed ok for me: The last Southampton player to score a competitive hat-trick for the club was Sadio Mané. He achieved this feat on 1 May 2016 during a 4-2 victory against Manchester City in the Premier League at St Mary's Stadium. This was his second treble for the club, following his record-breaking hat-trick against Aston Villa in 2015, which remains the fastest in Premier League history at 2 minutes and 56 seconds. While other players have come close since then: Adam Armstrong scored two goals in a 2-0 victory against Crystal Palace in December 2025 and was denied a hat-trick by a late save. Che Adams scored a hat-trick for the Scotland national team in June 2025 but never managed one for Southampton, having reached a brace on seven different occasions. Dom Ballard scored a hat-trick for the Southampton Under-21s in May 2025 during a Premier League 2 play-off quarter-final against Fulham. Mané's 2016 performance against City stands as the most recent treble for the first team.
