Mark Paul looks a shortarse in that photo. Definitely a big ask for him to make it at PL.

Of the others, Beattie aside, that was a pretty poor summer recruitment. Hughes was barely interested, Ripley I think had one good game for us, Howells pretty uneventful, Scott Marshall (OG) no further comment needed.

Sports Republic would have been proud of that lot.

Didn’t he score 50 goals in one season at youth level? He was just before Cosimo Sali who was another wonder kid people said should be fastracked to the first team but never played for them

Yes in a 5-0 early season battering against Charlton. He did score an equaliser at Highbury for an ultra-rare point against the Gunners that same season though. Think it was our first or second point on about game 8.

*Last league win away to Arsenal is so long ago that they were redeveloping Highbury at the time 😁 (remember the mural of fans painted on the hoarding in front of the demolished stand/terrace).

Ah the Dave Jones Dad's Army of signing ageing 30+ pros. We had a lot in those couple of years. The season before we had Palmer, Jones, Richardson, Hirst and Beresford, that season was Ripley, Howells, Hughes, Colleter and Marsden. Some bigger hits than others but we also bought Beatts, Pahars and Kachloul who were younger hits. I remember ringing in to Radio Solent to rave about Carlton Palmer. I had only recently been introduced to alcohol and made a bit of a tit of myself. Nothing has changed in that respect.
