He may even get thrown in against Watford. The club are saying that Larin is still nursing himself back to fitness and they’ll only make a decision later in the week as to whether he can start.

The idea of going with Archer or BBD as starting lone striker was starting to be a concern.

Just hope this lad can step up. Def need some goals from him, but our system also needs him to be decent at hold up play too and that bit is a definite unknown for me at this point.

Shame if so, because if he's a success it would be nice for us to have first option when Mubama will probably have limited chances there when Erling is around. 

On the flip side, if he does have a successful season, we'll have benefitted anyway.

Would be a nice problem to have if we did manage to make it to the prem.

Somewhat underwhelmed by this. It doesn't really hit as a signing of intent. It certainly doesn't feel like a signing that says "we want to win this league". 

I genuinely hope he scores 20+ goals and is a massive success but I can't help but feel that he'll be in and out of the first team and won't be a regular starter.

interesting how he gets on compared to our top 2 alternatives (Stewart and the lad at Boro), at least in terms of games/goals.

We play a system with only one striker. Only one of our strikers can be the regular starter and that'll be Larin. What we need are backups to Larin who pose a threat. Downs and Archer so far don't look like they will be, so we need someone else.

I hope he isn't a starter because it will mean Larin is fit and performing well. He's not the signing I wanted but it doesn't mean it won't work. Larin was a revelation for example.

he was well rotated with Stewart though, and doing so did not see a drop in quality.

I'm hoping that Larin is fitter and therefore we won't need as much rotation. I agree though, on the face of it it does make us weaker.

The Stewart/Larin rotation is arguably what made both of them look sharp and fresh. The level of competition between the two really helped.

Big Cyle is 31 now. We’ll see, but it’s likely his minutes will need to be managed over a 46 game league season. If we’ve only got a ‘backup offering a threat’ rather than the genuine level of competition we had with Stewart, then we’re down some on last season in the striking options.

Think he'll get plenty of minutes off the bench because Tonda tends to give the striker 60-70 minutes max. I'd keep Archer as an option mainly from the left as cover for Leo because he's shown he can do that job and presents a goal threat plus some decent pace.

I had no recollection of his performance against us last year. For me their stand out player - apart from the GK - was the winger Thomas.

On looking up the match I see he was sent off for two yellow cards. The second described on the Saints website as for simulation. Don’t think that’s the sort of performance we need.

Agreed. Plus he can play up front if required. Combined with Dobbin that may be enough cover.

I actually think the opposite. Shows how highly City rate him. He’s not seen as an easy profit and a trading player for them just yet.

He’s probably the best young English striker around right now. Not sure why that isn’t intent and is underwhelming. Given you’re on here suggesting Ballard should have stayed then criticism of this signing is an incredible position to take.

I disagree. What we had in 2nd half of last season was 2 more or less equal level strikers in Larin and Stewart and that worked incredibly well. Both provided physicality and a focal point for the team and were strong players at this level, which meant we could interchange them, keeping them fresh and fit and helping us maintain our intensity up front through the entire 90+ minutes of matches. I don't think either could be considered our "no.1 regular starter" and that was fine and actually an advantage for the team.

Larin is 31 years old and the lone striker role is tough physically over a long hard season so I think we still need someone on the same kind of level that can interchange and keep that intensity up for us like Stewart did, not just a backup for Larin. If we don't achieve that, the danger is we will move backwards from our form in 2nd half of last season. 

I don't know enough about this Man City lad to know if he can provide that for us, let's hope he can progress from his Stoke form last season.
