TijuanaTim Posted 17 March, 2009 Share Posted 17 March, 2009 A really great day out with friends/like minded souls? A Saints win at any cost? A massive Saints win e.g. Cup Final, away win at mega club, victory over pompers? A really good game? A really good Saints footballing display? A great Saints goal? A great Saints individual performance..e.g. one of MLT's many, young She-rah .v. the Arse, Big Ron at OT? A big p!ss-up? You can't respond with 'all of the above', what is the one defining thing (if possible)?

Papa Shango Posted 17 March, 2009 Share Posted 17 March, 2009 Away wins are nearly always 10 times better and more memorable than home wins for me. Wins against the Skates are always nice too.

70's Mike Posted 18 March, 2009 Share Posted 18 March, 2009 interesting question i used to love it when we turned over the london clubs so Dellhurst park rates highly, as does beating Everton at The Dell when Pahars scored twice , the whole place was rocking. 30th April to 3rd May 1976 longest sustained high regarding football, although going to Anderlecht in 77 was a great few days. Fratton 84 for great satisfaction and long term memories. Newcastle at The Dell coming back from 2 down to win with 3 really late goals, floated home that night on the high. Two night games against Orient separated by 11 years, different emotions as only 12 for first one and 23 for second promotion. In 66 i thought i supported best club in world and still felt the same in 78, just able to fuel the high in 78 with booze.
EastleighSoulBoy Posted 18 March, 2009 Share Posted 18 March, 2009 For us old 'uns May 1st '76 must be top memory for happiness? But there are loads of away days which were happy and fun. Not always because of the actual game. '74/'75 Blackpool away, March time. 40 a side beach footy at 8 in the morning. the natives wondered what hit them! Us Eastleigh boys (and a few London Saints) stopping off at Kidderminster on the way back from Notts County. Loud, Loony and no trouble at all, again the locals were wondering who had let us out for the day. Rich Coakley (RIP) May 1st 76. As we walked through Windsor singing You'll Never Walk Alone. Rich didn't hold a scarf up, it was his trousers. Happy days and memories. Those days out at Orient, Fulham, Oxford (because you felt safe) were fun. Met some really decent lads Oldham fans and we met up a few times when in the same division for drinks and a chat. Have met, and still remember, some fantastic Saints boys over the years. Some sadly no longer with us. God bless them all.
Saint Bones Posted 18 March, 2009 Share Posted 18 March, 2009 Well many great memories but being an OS supporter what makes me most happy is when we are televised. Unfortunatley with our 'TV' form it's often the thing that makes me the saddest too hehe Special mention to meeting another Saints fan when out and about ! sidthesquid Posted 18 March, 2009 Share Posted 18 March, 2009 Beating ManUre & the Skates always seems to top my agenda. 1976 was a top, top day out, though only young. Moran's late winner at Fartton Park in 84 (I think) took some topping as did 4-1 v Liverpool under Nicholl & 6-3 v Utd. Last day of last season seemed good at the time, too. Also seeing one of our home-grown lads, like Channon, Williams, Bridgey get to play for England
Sheff Saint Posted 18 March, 2009 Share Posted 18 March, 2009 In general i think beating the odds is always great and when the pressure is on it's brilliant. Games like West Brom away last season, Reading this season. They're all fab. When we won at Newcastle 1-0 with MLT scoring, that was amazing. Specifically i loved Dellhurst. I loved 120 mintues of the the play off game at Pride Park. That was a brilliant match as well, even if the outcome ended up rubbish. Beating Man Utd those three years on the trot. Beating Arsenal at SMS. Beating Arsenal at the Dell in the last game. Perfect things like that just don't happen as a Saints fan!

chuz Posted 18 March, 2009 Share Posted 18 March, 2009 I was only six when we won the cup so I guess that I just thought "wow, we will do this all the time now!" For me it is either the ability to have a crack whatever the score, or defying the odds. On the first count, I was at the Everton away game when we lost 7-1. We were 5-0 down after 35 minutes and after that the atmosphere was great. We all decided to have a party. My Arsenal supporting mate (who had never seen his team get a thumping) was amazed at our support. I also think the Cup Final 2003 counts in that respect. We went to have a great time and no one was gonna stop us. Apart from Claus' foul on Henry, Antii getting injured and Beats late chance, I cannot remember anything of the game, just the amazing atmosphere before, during and after. In terms of defying the odds, the whole end to the Great Escape season was brilliant. Dellhurst was great too. But the best feeling ever at a football match for me was Matty scoring against Arsenal in the last game at the Dell. It was just such a fitting end to the place... miserableoldgit Posted 18 March, 2009 Share Posted 18 March, 2009 Strangely enough, the thing that gave me most excitement Saints-wise happened off the pitch. That was the signing of Kevin Keegan. I can remember virtually everything about that day. European Footballer of the Year signs for Saints!! The whole country was shocked. The fact that he signed towards the end of one season and couldn`t play for us until the next really cranked up the excitement and sense of anticipation! There were many exciting signings in those days (Peter Osgood, Peter Shilton, Charlie George, Alan Ball etc) but KK will always stay top with any Saints fan that remembers it. On the pitch - 1976 and almost anything that involved Matt Le Tissier!
Give it to Ron Posted 18 March, 2009 Share Posted 18 March, 2009 Its always beating the Skates. Dec 21 2003 Saints 3 Pompey 0 was a great occasion and I left the stadium full of Christmas spirit and optimism...since then apart from Pearson getting lucky on the last day of last season ;-) its been pretty crap ever since! I jumped for joy at Burley coming and was severely kicked in the nuts by his lack of wanting to be here and his mental decision making or lack of. Nowadays its very hard to stay full of hope and optimism with the 3 wise monkeys we have running the club. It will be a long time until we can be optimistic again as we will not be ready until all are banished and we have hit rock bottom.

Window Cleaner Posted 18 March, 2009 Share Posted 18 March, 2009 Steve Moran was probably involved in over half of them, allied with Alan Ball or Steve Williams in most cases. SNSUN Posted 18 March, 2009 Share Posted 18 March, 2009 Under Alan Ball, and with Ships and Flash up front, we were seemingly winning every game at one point. I remember being on holiday in Mablethorpe (for my sins), and there was a bright sun shining, I was lying on a beach with a radio and we won 3-0. That was a happy moment for me. The whole point of football is to win and get three points. There's no better feeling IMO, especially stringing a few wins together. How drunk would we all be if Saints went defeated until the end of the season... :-)
SoccerMom Posted 18 March, 2009 Share Posted 18 March, 2009 Winning, of course. And now, the added entertainment value of watching the nipper's reaction to what's happening on the pitch, including more than once tipping water down his own back when he's thrown his hands up in the air at a goal or a near miss. Arizona Posted 18 March, 2009 Share Posted 18 March, 2009 Unexpected moments are a big plus. I remember the 3 goals in 6 minutes against top of the table Brum 2 years ago. When Kenny scored against the run of play I was delighted. When he scored the second I was hugging strangers in the Itchen. When Skacel got the third I nearly collapsed. The look of all the livid Brummies hurling abuse at Maik Taylor as we celebrated. Then they got 2 back and just when you thought we were going to throw it away and the Brummies are singing, "gonna win 4-3", BWP comes on and scores with his first touch. Magic. Favourite players scoring against least favourite teams is always a plus. Pahars and Beattie (x3 ) against the Skates. Tessem against Spuds. Skacel against Leeds. Rasiak against Derby. etc.
Ivan Katalinic's 'tache Posted 18 March, 2009 Share Posted 18 March, 2009 One of my happiest Saints moments actually happened this week (yes, really!): I was putting my (near) 3-year old son in his car seat when our P*mpey supporting postie walked by. He tapped me on the back and said to my son (who was wearing his Saints shirt at the time): "I bet you'd prefer one of these?", pointing to the P*mpey badge on his hat, to which my son smirked and shouted (the much rehearsed phrase in our house): "Stinky P*mpey!". Absolute magic and a priceless look of shock on the postie's face.
Dan Johnson Posted 18 March, 2009 Share Posted 18 March, 2009 Although we went down, the atmosphere we had in our relegation season at home to Norwich was for me just breathe taking. When Henri Camara scored that goal, the roof was lifted off St Marys... I remember getting goose pimples! beating Man Utd is always nice, I remember turning to my little brother when saints beat united 1-0 just before we took the corner, and telling him that now would be the perfect time to score, then beattie got his head on it :-) Also players playing for the shirt, I remember away at west ham when Beattie got the winner right towards the end of the game to win 1-0, and he just stood in the goal mouth screaming with delight... always nice to see passion from the players. Genghis78 Posted 18 March, 2009 Share Posted 18 March, 2009 I love seeing Le God on Sky Sports News when he's talking about Saints. You can see the passion still in him for the side, none of this objective journalism for Matty! Other than that, Dellhurst even though me and my mate got so drunk before hand that we weren't let in, and Marsden and Bridge overlapping down the wing during our St Marys 'glory days'

Would have to agree with that I remember my mate a manure fan coming over at work telling me we'd signed KK think it was about 3.0pm-ish. Told him to F**k off & stop taking the P**s. He assured me it was true but I wouldn't believe it till I got home & switched Solent on. then just sat revealing in it on the radio & the local & NATIONAL news. As you say the expectation levels just went through the roof & we couldn't wait for the next season to start.
