Saint Fan CaM Posted 18 May, 2009 Share Posted 18 May, 2009 http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/sport/football/football_league/article6315929.ece Could they be the new force or at least 2nd best team on the South coast? How is it that SFC is not more attractive to a buyer than Brighton? Where are all our rich supporters in our time of need? I am SO depressed this evening reading on the one hand SFC's close demise and on the other hand another smaller club's ability to raise huge funds - much more than we need to stay afloat. I cannot help but think there is something we're still not being told about the financial issues at SMS - something that stinks to high-heaven.
Saintjersey Posted 18 May, 2009 Share Posted 18 May, 2009 I agree that is very depressing. It says the owner's family has been linked to Brighton in the past, so I am guessing that is all that we need

skintsaint Posted 19 May, 2009 Share Posted 19 May, 2009 "and the new loans, due to be repaid in 2023, could also be converted into shares" they 'may' have to pay it back so not as rosy as what it first seems.
Gordon Mockles Posted 19 May, 2009 Share Posted 19 May, 2009 (edited) You beat me to it. Unreal. Ok, Brighton's nightlife and shopping is much more exciting than Southampton but we're still fairly comparable. What the f*ck is the problem with investing in Southampton Football Club?! Local Council related problems we don't hear about (re: potential development), Previously shareholders and chairmen...why is it seemingly so impossible for a club with so much potential to be realised. Same as the city - it's a city waiting for something to happen...but it never ever does! GRRRR!!!! WHY? Is there more to it than meets the eye (as suggested, local authorities, planning dept. [who, are, to be fair - the biggest bunch of brainless idiots alive!], etc.) or is it just that no-one really likes Southampton that much?! It's very strange we have all our facilities, fan base, academy, location, stadium, etc...as well as a reasonable city with tons of martime history, marina (not executed as well as Gunwharf I hate to admit, see previous planner comment!), shopping and loads of green space. Could get much worse...you could live in Swindon or Middlesborough! Someone please...invest! Oh, and I do think the potential investors may be playing it wisely. Just to give my opinion in matters. I'd be more worried about new leaders of our club not having much business sense if they didn't try to thrash out the best deal with the administrator/creditors. If it means hanging on until the 11th hour (all be it, nerve racking) to save a few million or 2, then good on them. Proves they have business brains rather than potentially sp*nking a few million that could go into the club. I'd certainly not bow down to the pitiful likes of Barclays and Aviva (part of Norwich Union I believe - more t*ssers who penny pinch without morals - been that way since they got fleeced by the Hurricaines in '87!) Lucky we're not involved with creditors as unscrupulous as the Halifax! I despise the way these financial institutions have acted in recent years. Lead people easily into debt, then tighten the screws, more so no down to their own incompetency, whack huge charges and act without an ounce of empathy. No wonder they make such large profits! I do feel Saints were truly stitched but I do wonder if this was caused more from persons, rather than purely the financial position (i.e. awkward chairman rubbing the bank manager up the wrong way, we'll maybe never know & let's not go there) Digressed slightly, apologies. I agree though in essence. There must be something none of us know or WHY have so many people sheered away from our club?! It stinks of rotten haddock! I feel the whole thing - club, finances, the lot - has been mismanaged and is still being mismanaged. This thing with Pinnacle/MLT and other potential bidders is farcical. What the ****'s going on? How hard can it be to single out the highest bidder, take the money and secure the club from vanishing?
Doctoroncall Posted 19 May, 2009 Share Posted 19 May, 2009 Nice to see a club achieve something they set out to do. Has anyone seen the proposed stadium? At £93m it cannot be out-of-the-box like SMS. Still as the article states "The majority of the funding is to be provided in the form of interest-free loans" so that's quite a debt for a league one club. notnowcato Posted 19 May, 2009 Share Posted 19 May, 2009 Let's not get too depressed. Brighton's fortune is the exception to the rule. Good luck to them.
aintforever Posted 19 May, 2009 Share Posted 19 May, 2009 It's amazing that they can get 90+mill investment yet an investor could get SFC for under a 10th of that and would get a club with a bigger stadium, better training/academy set up and a much bigger fan base. Fair play to Brighton though, their fans have had to put up with more than their fair share of grief.

ladysaint Posted 19 May, 2009 Share Posted 19 May, 2009 Anyone else hear on radio hants this morning that Chris Evans (Ginger Group) were very close to buying Everton FC a few years back for about 12m. Wonder if he still has a few millon to spare and still interested in a football club.

Saint Fan CaM Posted 19 May, 2009 Author Share Posted 19 May, 2009 Just still cannot understand how Brighton can manage this and yet Saints are on the verge of meltdown with 120 odd years of heritage and history about to be thrown away. I was born in Brighton and do follow their progress, so I guess at least I'll have a proper reason to support them if Saints go bust. That in no way compensates for the way I feel about the depth of incompetent management at Saints though.

Its more bizarre to me that someone would pay £140m for Newcastle United but no-one can find £8m (plus covering a debt of at most £25m more) for Saints as a going concern at the moment. Even as a "big" League One team, even in a recession, even on a tight timescale you'd still think we'd be worth a punt from someone...
rallyboy Posted 19 May, 2009 Share Posted 19 May, 2009 Looks a bit odd to me. It appears that the main investor is using his loans to take full control of the club. The club will NEVER repay that amount without getting into the Champion's League and increasing the stadium size, so in a few years he will force the other shareholders out through default of repayments, and on top of that they don't even own the land!.... IMO it's not a new dawn for them, it's a 22,000 seater can of worms.
