Saints Ladies

I know that some will scoff about this.

However if we get our club back in one piece is it possible to bring the ladies back into the fold. Even if only to play at staplewood. They do still wear our colours.

Now comes the flack but never fear I have my jacket on.

They aren't pulling up trees but they aren't doing to badly as they have no money either.

How much money do they need though?

I can't see they being paid a wage like professional players and being women they won't need anyone else to wash and iron their kit.

My daughter played for them several years ago when they were still in the FA Ladies Premier League. From memory they fell like a stone and I think possibly disappeared completely when SFC/SLH withdrew their funding, shortly after they got relegated.

A good parallel to the men's team actually :(

Saints Ladies have just finished second in their League and got to the League Cup Final which they lost 2-0.

Considering that it is a completely rebuilt team with only two players surviving from last season, most of the current team being Under-21's, it's a pretty impressive finish.

The team was 'ditched' by Lowe a few years ago, despite the fact that the cost to the club was minimal. They currently survive as a self-finances organisation backed up by a number of girls teams aged 8 up.

It would be nice to think that the refinanced club could offer some support, even if it is only the use of the ground at Staplewood to play matches. They currently play at Gang Warily near Fawley.

Met some ladies in a pub in Southampton late 70s..Got talking football and it turned out they were Southampton Football ladies....Usual chit chat ladies no good and all that....Invited me and my mates to watch International at Dell..About 4/5 Saints in England ladies team...Days of Lopes, Bucket, Chapman and some names I forget maybe Coffin? etc....Boy were they good.

Since then I have watched it on the telly and the standard is definitely on the rise..

When Saints get sorted bring the ladies into the fold again.

Best team in the country in those days by far.

the plug was pulled after relegation to save costs although to be far the glory days had passed as other clubs caught up and overtook us

I see the usual idiots infect this thread with their pathetic sexist jokes.

Saints girls still have thriving academy and junior teams run by Peter Thorne a very good coach.

The Saints have several teams that play in the Winchester and District Girls League and are quite successful.

One of the girls that plays for my team on Saturdays has played for Saints last year and is off to them next is absolute quality and a match for most boys of her age.

There is no comparison between skill level but the enjoyment, committment and team game is as strong and in many cases far better than the boys.

I do not think any money should be diverted from the new owners if we have them as the priority must be to channell everything into the first team until we can get back to the Premiership and then possibly revisit this again.

Didn't their entire first team decamp to Portsmouth's team when Southampton Saints get the "officially supported" boot when we dropped out of the Prem ?

Weirdly I wiki'd this the other day and Portsmouth Ladies (Prem Lge South division, 2nd tier) are currently the top South Coast side, though also the only one which has never played in the Ladies' Premier League. Nothing about Southampton, a broken link in fact.

I see to recall one of the Southampton Saints players posted on TSF, I'm sure some people on here will remember. :D

Some of the girls were from the Portsmouth area and did indeed go to play for them. Several others went to Bristol, a couple to Arsenal and Fulham, who were the top team at that time. However Fulham reduced their support for their ladies team about the same time so all the full time players at Fulham disappeared to various other professional teams around the world, mainly USA and Sweden I think. This left a few team places for the Southampton people. One of the girls in that team has just been given a central contract by the FA.

Indeed, Kimberley. She disappeared when the team got dropped though.

I'm glad we aren't afraid to debate the big issues at this difficult time. I've barely slept a night since they were given the boot.

I've just finished drafting a letter to the interested consortia, outlining my views on the subject.

Yeah its not as if the 150 takeover/non-takeover threads on here are enough to discuss that is there?

Or the constant Lowe/Anti-Lowe threads that get posted every 2 minutes?

Lets only have those threads over and over again.....
