13 teams in top 4 divisions with 'ton' in the name
VectisSaint replied to Batman's topic in The Saints
Actually not, ton as a suffix in a place name is usually a corruption of 'tun', which meant enclosure, farmstead or hamlet/village. Hence the original name for Southampton was Hamptun (alternatively Hamwic). Here endeth the history lesson. -
And the problem with this is Mr Winter? Right man right place. Better than pinning your hopes on some other English "strikers".

Official: Saints academy player most expensive player ever
VectisSaint replied to Saint-Armstrong's topic in The Saints
Why? They do produce some good 'uns occassionally. Best CF in the world ever, Big Ron, and then there's that Giggs bloke who was quite good as well (not to mention John Charles foe the oldies). Maybe we can use the 2% to try to attract a replacement for Matt Crocker, the Academy seems to be having a bit of a blip since he left, and as far as I can tell he has not been replaced as yet. -
Why has everyone reverted to questioning the manger ?
VectisSaint replied to Saints boy in Leeds's topic in The Saints
We were not appalling against Man City or Manure, in fact for most of the game against Manure we were ****ing brilliant. We were appalling against an awful Wigan side admittedly (though Fonte's glaring mistake was immaterial), and completely lost the plot against the Arse. From then on we started to improve slowly. This season we have been goodish against WBA (though they are not the team they were), average against an awful Sunderland side and poor against an average Norwich side. But we have defended well in all three, apart from 2 lapses (Lovren has slotted in brilliantly) and looked mediocre in the centre and up front, creativity and finishing is lacking. But no way am I questioning the manager at the moment. I have to assume Clyne and Shaw were not fully fit and the plan was not to use them except in an emergency, and there was clearly a plan to replace Lallana with Gaston again, a mistake by MP perhaps not to see that Lallana was playing very well and to change the plan rather than stick to the pre-match arrangement. -
Linked with West Brom this morning according to Birmingham Mail. May depend on who is bestest mates with Mourinho, Clarke or Pochettino.

Don't you think it would have been better to have built the stadium to incorporate Royal Pier, including docking facilities for Red Funnel and Hythe Ferries, it could also include a new terminus for the railway. The main stadium could have been built out over Southampton Water. I've seen mockups for this it must be feasible. Oh wait.

Capital One Cup 3rd Round Draw - Home to Bristol City
VectisSaint replied to lickierambert's topic in The Saints
Bristol City away would not be a problem, just wear our home shirt and they'll think you are a local. -
Mike Pollitt, over 500 league appearances for various clubs, including 36 for Wigan. Might be 41 but hardly lacking in experience.

Based on one game this season, its difficult to know whether this is a worrying trend or not. I don't recall Saints resorting to "hitting high balls towards Rickie Lambert (and, now, Daniel Osvaldo)" on Saturday, at least not often. I think we showed plenty of invention on Saturday and on another day and with a different ref might have scored 3 or 4, but it is always going to be difficult to break down a team who go one up so early and then park the bus. The defensive lapse was unacceptable, but their scorer was very clever peeling off the back of the defensive mob, and made the goal because of his size not in spite of it. Lambert and Chambers did not react to what was clearly happening behind the backs of the defenders who were "marking" the main aerial threats and that is a lesson that we have to learn (and that our future opponents might try to exploit). Nonetheless if anyone is going to plug the leaks in our defence I would put some faith in MP. Only time will tell if we still do have a problem with weaker teams at home, far too early to conclude so far.

Yet Another Goal From A Corner With No One On The Posts
VectisSaint replied to TijuanaTim's topic in The Saints
He didn't get between anyone, he peeled off of the back of the group of players and found himself in space latterly vacated by SRL and not picked up by Chambers either. Man on the post would have made no difference, issue is that he was allowed to get away from the other players and those in the right area were asleep. -
Too big, poor quality, badly edited content (check out the dates of birth for some of our players who seem to have been born the same day as Kelvin, as my nipper noticed). One of several things that I found disappointing about the "match day experience". Seeing lots of stripes about the city and realising they were Mackems. The new shirt is tacky, if I wanted to support Bristol City or Arsenal I would.

Helped them get their first point of the season last night. Past his best when he joined us but always gave his best and was a positive contributor on and off the field, hope he does well.

One of those instances where last year's form has zero bearing on this year. Different manager and completely (?) different team. Apart from their name they bear absolutely no relationship to the team we played last season.

"Gimme Shelter" - any chance for the next few games?
VectisSaint replied to Saint-Armstrong's topic in The Saints
Very good. I wonder how many in St Marys know the tune though. You will have to pay me 10% every time we sing it for more than 20 seconds. -
Will be a massive disappointment if he does not score with his first touch. He surely must follow the example of SRL England Goal Machine.

VectisSaint replied to Saint-Armstrong's topic in The Saints
Ballad of John and Yoko might be more appropriate if his t-shirt when he arrived at SMS is anything to go by. I do like this guy, has decent taste in music. Still a bit concerned about players wearing glasses though. -
To be fair apart from his age I would love to have Berbatov at St Marys. He is a class player and would have suited our system ideally, his vision and movement off the ball is brilliant and he scores as many as SRL. As for Bent they are welcome to him, useless pile of ****.

Its either Bale or Messi.

Point is Gaston is on the bench, Yoshi is not, same game, same flights, why is one jet lagged and not the other. I am guessing Yoshi may have picked up a knock, didn't people say he had an awful game, maybe knock might explain that a bit. Anyway he's not playing and to be honest didn't expect him to start today, just surprised MP has gone with Jose rather than Jos based on pre-season.

Scored one more than Corky.
