I'm at a loss to know what Stephens did to deserve to be dropped. He was our best defender for the last two games. This back four, against a better side than Cardiff, would have let in 3 or 4 by now. Vestergaard has been atrocious, Targett has made a handful of howlers and gifted them chances, and Valery will be very lucky not to get a second yellow the way he's going. Going forward, we don't seem to have any plan or shape when attacking. Not getting in behind at all, and our best chance fell to Lemina who really had to do better with the time and space he had. Ralph really has got his work cut out to get this lot playing like a team.

Valery is a red card waiting to happen.

Both CBs looking incredibly shaky today. I feel a bit sorry for Stephens really. Last few games he has looked the best of our current options so he will be disappointed to have been dropped today.

You say that, but he did play one delightful through-ball to Gabbi last night, who unfortunately made a total hash of controlling it. But aside from that, JWP's overall contribution was poor. He's just too lightweight. Watching him and Targett marking Kane and Dier at set pieces was literally like watching men vs boys.

If you had asked me last week when the reports were coming out that we had no plans to sack Hughes, my answer would have been a resounding 'yes'. As it is, I can't possibly say until I have seen how much difference - if any - the new manager can make.

He knows where the net is and has a decent shot on him, and if you give him a chance in the box he is far more likely to score from it than any of our other profligate lightweights. That much is true. But his ability to find that space for himself in the box is severely hampered by his lack of mobility, which has only got worse since he joined. Add in his inability to hold the ball up and bring others into play, his overall contribution to the team this season has been very poor.

He was the best of a bad bunch tonight, but he is still a long way from being at the level we need if we want to get back to being a top half club.

If I am being ultra-generous to him, I would say that he has shown in the past he needs to have a good run in the side with a regular partner to be anything close to decent. In the back half of 16/17 when we sold Fonte and lost VVD to injury, he and Stephens played together every week and he was a lot better then than he has been this season. Not amazing, granted, but certainly not at the level of muppetry we saw tonight. But if we're serious about reviving our ambitions with the new manager then we desperately need to upgrade him.

Sign at least one competent CB in January. If we can only do one thing to improve our situation, that would be it. Not one of our current CBs would be a regular starter at any other PL club.

Well there are some encouraging signs at least. We kept our heads up and kept going til the end for starters. And we created a few decent chances but didn't have the right personnel on the pitch to finish them off. But really our marking was just so poor, and I'm now starting to realise why Hughes didn't play Yoshida. After having a decent WC I thought he would be a regular fixture in the side, but he has been badly at fault for just about every goal we have conceded recently, and was woeful tonight. Certainly won't have impressed the new manager.
