I think after 40+ years of following Saints that i'm close to giving up on football altogether. No clubs can compete with the top 4/5 sides and when you do get close to having a side that will give the big boys a run for the money you get raided. The players themselves are nothing but greedy mercenaries who dont give a jot about the fans or the club that gave them their chance to sign. I really hope i'm right here but a large part of me thinks this VVD transfer is already done. I think the two clubs have already agreed the deal, the ammount etc etc and we have an agreement with Celtic that he will officially join after their CL elimination or qualification to the group stages.......if this is not the case we are taking a massive gamble that another club will get him and i don't want to believe we are that stupid.

Hypo, don't get me wrong i'm just giving an opinion of the game i watched him play at the weekend. I agree that he looks a class player and infact i would say he reminded me of Clyne in as much that once Clynes head was turned in January he just never looked 110% committed and i think this is currently true of VVD. I would be very happy if we sign him....i just think people should be realistic about the quality of the Scottish league.

ok i will put my hands up straight away and say i only really watched him closely at the weekend although i've seen Celtic plenty. I have to agree with Derry because the Scottish Premiership is awful. I can honestly say i was not impressed with him as a defender at the weekend. Going forward great, passing generally excellent....defending looked woeful, but i kinda got the impression he couldnt be bothered. I'm sure he can adjust to the premiership but i think people need to be realistic about the level he has been playing against and not expect a world beater.

Having watched the Celtic game i am now slightly worried if we are in for VVD.....I AM HOPING it was a case of i'm not trying my hardest as i have a move to a Premiership club lined up. He passes well, glides forward great.....but his defending looked woeful....hoping it was a case of disinterested, a bit like Clyne second half of last season.

have watched the game and although he passes very well, is a threat going forward.....i'm not so sure about his defencive qualities! He almost looked disinterested when it came to defending. I think Saints fans will love him tearing out of defence.....I just hope he is as good defending. Like what i saw.....but this was the first time i really concentrated on watching him as opposed to watching just the game.

I do not believe for one minute we could have ever been interested in Chester. What can WBA give him that we can not?? Some people on this forum embarrass themselves with their ridiculous panicky comments and others i swear just deliberately troll to see how many bites they can get. Have people learnt nothing from the last few seasons....we do our business quietly, we do not announce to the world every target we have and every offer we have put in. Totally agree with the above. It has been an incredible journey and i have loved every minute of it. Being a Saints fan is just so completely different. 40 plus years i have followed Saints and i have loved the journey. What an incredible journey from Tuesday nights in Hartlepool to Thursday nights in Arnhem, I've loved it all.

well i was amazed we were ever in the running for this player in the first instance .....but now Port have come in with $25 mill offer i pretty much think thats it....i live in hope he would prefer to come to us and the Premiership but would Porto be just as appealing to him???

never ever expected him to stay....and to be honest i dont expect any of our good players to stay more than a couple of seasons. As soon as a bigger club come sniffing it is inevitable they will be off....money talks...end of discussion really.

awful from the English youngsters. Midfield are scared to play a forward ball, everything is backwards or sideways......heavily reliant on Kane getting lucky but the service is crap!

As much as i would be gutted if Toby went elsewhere (especially bloody Spurs) i am confident that in RK he has alternatives lined up. We have to believe that RK knows a good defender when he sees one and one that would suit the Premiership. I'm sure we could find someone that will do the job and welcome being a first team player, playing in the Premiership, playing in Europe and playing for RK....the last bit cannot be understated at all.

was a big mistake taking JWP off. He is by far the best dead ball player in that England team. He was neat and tidy without being special. That all said this was a very decent Portugal side.

cannot complain with the business done by Saints so far.The outlay is minimal going by todays inflated transfer fees and potentially we have 2 very good players. I thought it had been confirmed that we were not taking up the option on ELIA......I havent seen anything regarding Djuricic though??? Watched him last night for the under 21's and thought he had a very good game....he is another talented young player that RK might think is worth taking a punt on again this season?

I've said before and i will say again.....i just don't think we are to fussed about Austin. At the right price he might have been a good addition but i trust we can find an alternative for a fraction of the price.

we should all know by now Saints do their business quietly.....the press/agents want to link us with everyone under the sun and we might end up signing someone that someone vaguely linked us to......throw enough **** and eventually some will stick. None of us know who is on our shopping list, we just have a reasonable idea what positions need to be filled, the rest is just pure speculation. I trust the club totally to sign players that will improve us and will be happy to only hear anything when the new players have officially signed and are wearing the "watch"!

If we are seriously interested in Austin (which i have my doubts about) i cannot honestly see why if he has the choice between us and Newcastle he would choose them. Newcastle....seriously badly run club, a club not going anywhere, hardly an inspiring choice of new manager, no European football and in the other corner we have Southampton!!!...enough said. If he doesn't come here i don't believe we were interested.
