I'm sure you're 100% right on staged payments, but my question is "does it matter?" We won't receive a cheque up front for £75m for VVD, but were we to sign, say, Theo Walcott for £30m, we wouldn't be expected to pay that up front either. Our outgoings would be staged in the same way as our transfer income. On the history, Osvaldo and Ramirez were obviously very bad misfires, but on aggregate we seem to have been very smart on the transfer market, with the good acquisitions easily outweighing the bad ones.

Basically agree with all this. My only rider is that our situation is now so dire that I'd gamble. We are on a clear trajectory to relegation, so I would now start throwing mud at a wall and just hope something sticks.

We are not going to offer £30m for Mane. Even if we did, even if Liverpool accepted the offer and even if we paid him £150K pw (which we wouldn't), he still wouldn't come. This is la la land.

My confusion over transfer targets is that I can't really see anyone we could credibly sign who is obviously much better than we already have. Yeah, I'd rather have Walcott than Redmond, but that's probably a £20m+ outlay for a relatively modest improvement. Yeah, I'd much rather have Mane than Boufal, but that is obviously totally inconceivable.

Soft penalty, but definitely a penalty. Lovren is astonishingly bad.

A great game. Obviously gutting to let it slip in he 88th minute, but we were playing a team who were several notches better than we are. My only whinge is I'm not sure why we didn't throw on Lemina in the last 10-15 minutes. 1-0 up and needing to both defend and get hold of the ball. Made for him, surely?

Play 7-2-1 and hope for a lucky 0-0. Don't risk anyone who is more important for the Bournemouth match, so probably bench Lemina and give him the last 20-30 mins almost irrespective of the scoreline. I'd probably play Long up front.
