WTF has "staple diet" got to do with a anything? You keep banging on about it but it's completely irrelevant. We could all have a staple diet of rice and vegetables and be quite happy. No idea why you keep harping on about staple diets. Also, why can't some people in a culture have a different staple diet than others? The point stands that we don't like this because, to us, dolphins are nice. To Japanese they're "meh". That is it.
