Racism In Football 2019

abuse on social media is horrible.

however, twitter is an American company and posters/users from the USA (for example) are offered a far more free environment to spout their shyte.

The quick win is for players to leave twitter.

Unless you're engaging in some sort of thought crime where you preemptively ban people who may decide to racially abuse a player there's literally nothing that social media can do. The best thing the players can do is to block anyone abusing them and report it and you'd hope the authorities would take the appropriate action if they can be traced to the UK. If they can't accept the reality that there are idiots on social media then they should do as you suggest and leave.

Honestly no. It's thoroughly unpleasant and a Police matter but it isn't really news. If anything it needs less media exposure as there are plenty of people who get off on how much they can offend and upset strangers on the internet.

Yet it has been all over the general media this week so it seems to be an issue to some. Yes, it isn’t new, but the point is what is going to be done about it. It is still too easy for people to hide behind the anonymity of of PC keyboard. Make people more accountable for their actions and perhaps it will help get rid of internet trolls.

How do you make someone anonymous accountable?

How do you propose to do that?

People have their priorities messed up. Some random nobody typing racist insults on his keyboard is not more important than half the Brazilian rain-forest being on fire. There's an entire documentary series on TV about Jade Goody being the 'reality star who changed Britain' when really she's a complete non-entity, famous for being famous.

If the people who wrote the tweets can be identified, they should be prosecuted. If not they should be ignored.

By removing anoyminity?

How? How do you stop someone using a free to use email signing up to twitter and using a name like batman or sadoldgit?

How does that work around the world, in nations where their freedom of speech is more liberal than ours?

Let’s say you upload passports/driving licenses etc... ripe for data collection and everything associated with it. Next thing, governments will be hiring a Cambridge analytica to harvest Twitter.

I think Jade Goody is in fact dead so wrong tense isn't it ?

Anyway, penalty missers have always been villified, just in good, old, anglo-saxon terms though.

I’m no expert but it must be possible to ensure that anyone signing up to social media platforms have to provide proof of identity at point of entry. Re data collection, isn’t there a law protecting personal data?

No one from America will agree to that condition for use of social media. Absolutely nothing to stop someone using a vpn to pretend they are from America and then sending as much racist abuse as they want. Completely unenforacble.

John Barnes speaks surprising sense on this issue generally about underlying attitudes nit a simple stamp it out issue

This isn’t a ‘stinging attack’ but does highlight the privilege that others don’t have.

John Barnes really has a grasp of the issues. Dare I say it's not black and white.

I think a clearer distinction needs to be made between the Twitter abuse directed at Pogba and Rashford, the occasional idiots in the English game and the ingrained, institutional abuse in Italy and Eastern Europe.

The first two we can do little about. There will always be c**ts in the world and football is no exception. The message is out there, if people still aren't getting it then it's a Police matter. The latter needs to be tackled harder by UEFA and the respective FAs. If it continues, ban the whole country from the Champions League for a couple of years and the nation from one major tournament. It's the only thing these people will understand. Telling some Russian Nazi he isn't very nice and giving players a nice badge to wear isn't going to change anything.

Paul Ince is suggesting that clubs should be thrown out of Europe or sat least having points docked in order to deal with racism. It has been going on far too long and perhaps draconian measures are now called for.
That's insane. How much racist abuse is there at the football? When there is racist remarks and it is reported then the perpetrators are typically banned for life. So if pompey ever get into Europe I can anonymously create the fratton forever twitter account and then racially abuse all their opponents players in order to get them kicked out and docked points?

I absolutely agree. In many ways those countries are going through the same sort of things we went through in the 80s. They should be punished until they reform. The point is it's their problem and not really anything to do with English football.

If I had to guess I suspect the old fella might be talking about recorded incidents of racism from fans or players, within the sport commonly known as football?

But that is a wild guess, so don't quote me on it - the original poster might need to clarify the key details.

Cheers. Still would be good to see some more details on this. The article says that some of the rise is due to greater reporting of incidents but would be good to know what is meant by hate incidents. For example, the working definition of a hate incident in wider society is one where the alleged victim feels something is motivated by hate. This means that in practice literally anything could be a hate incident.

Some clubs must be worse than others.

Barnsley fans in London pub proudly singing ‘we’ve no n*****s in our team'

Backward northern fckers.

As said before haven’t seen anything at Saints for years.

Barnsley is one of those condemned towns that no outsider visits out of choice. Ignorant, thick and poor.

Bizarre isn’t it when in 2019 you have to explain to someone what the words racism in football mean. Just what you would expect of a defender of the far right though and someone who has already played down the problems of racism in football on here. The further right you go it seems the more unpleasant you become. Perhaps he should go and have a word with Raheem Sterling about the issues black footballers are still facing?

One step away from an International football match being abandoned due to racism.

In Eastern Europe. Where racism actually IS a problem.

Racism is not an issue in this country bar one or two idiots a season.

People who claim racism is "rife" in British football need to take a look at nights like tonight and realise that actually this country is way ahead of the curve.

Exactly. Absolutely no one has said that there isn't racism in football in places like Bulgaria. There undoubtedly is and it needs sorting.

£10k fine and a partial stadium closure then

This is the trouble, it's all punishments that don't actually affect the fans. They won't qualify for the finals anyway so even a points deduction wouldn't do it.

And until their society moves on and the government condemns it, things won't change anyway...

I'd ban them from qualifying for the next tournament or make them play behind closed doors until further notice.
