STERN rejects Saints offer

A shame but seems that Pardew is working on numerous other deals so patience required - frustrating I know. There's no way Pardew would have joined had there not been significant scope to bring new players in. John - and I don't blame him - was waiting I guess to see if Palace were making an offer. However, it is looking likely that this season is one of consolidation and overcoming the -10, unless some really surprising rabbits appear out of the transfer hat.

No point in having players here who don't want to be here. I have to say I wasn't overly impressed with him at the Hearts game anyway. Looks out of shape, and let's not forget he's not exactly getting any younger. On the face of it, because of his goals a couple of seasons ago, it's a disappointment, but I reckon it'll turn out to be a good thing - some fresh faces are what we need right now.

Shame really - honestly thought that he would score a lot of goals in L1. I guess if the player doesn't want to be here though there is little we can do to change his mind.

Hopefully AP has a 'cunning plan' - otherwise would could start to look as threadbare as our near neighbours down at Nottarf Krap - and that would never do. ;)

Would prefer to keep Rasiak, now if we can do that then we'll be sorted.

If he wants to stay though. Not too concerned if strikers of an excellent quality for League 1 (ie Lita was never going to drop back to this level) are signed by Friday but we really cannot leave it any later as McG has also been sold and Saga is almost certain to go as well.

Billy Sharpe from Sheffield United would be a good replacement, on transfer list.

LOL I was just thinking that. Maybe it's more than a coincidence Stern saying he's leaving and Sharp being transfer listed on the same day? Or maybe not?

We're f**ked. Saga and Rasiak will be leaving - Ipswich striker Pablo Counago has also rejected a move to Swansea (despite a fee being agreed), putting them back on Swansea's radar.

We're ****ed if we only have Paterson and White come the start of the season. We're not ****ed yet. Patience.

I'm just disappointed he's messed us around.

How has he messed us around? he was offered a contract, he has considered his options and declined. Thats not messing anyone around. Messing some around is havig someone under contract and making it impossible for someone to honour that contract and shipping him out on loan to a rival.

I suspect that what this might mean is that Rasiak is planning to stay and SJ realised that he was not guaranteed 1st choice as striker, because clearly SJ and GR cannot play in the same team (unless we are playing a team of slugs).

£££

I was thinking this exact same thing after reading the BBC article on him. Wanted by Barnsley, Donny who yes at present are bigger teams but with our backing and set up, will not be for much longer. He is a proven striker at this level with Scunny and although he is not likely to be cheap, we can surely afford to spunk out on him now we have a bit of dough?! Especially if Johns wages are off the books and Saga's and Rasiaks are likely to follow.

The best times of Sharpes career have been in L1, so maybe that is enough to tempt him back.

Im disappointed to see John go and it looks as if he realised that he would need to use us for his preseason fitness and also to be placed in the shop window so told us he wants to stay. AP then plays him, giving him match fitness and affectively marketing him while he 'ponders' a contract he knows he will never sign.

It's one thing playing him and another playing Rasiak who I believe has time left on his contract, so it is in the best interests of both parties for us to play Rasiak and market him if we are looking at cashing in on him. John should not have been allowed to play until a new contract was signed as he is a free.

The strange thing about John is his attitude. Coventry fans didn't rate him after his initial good showing.

Perhaps it's the "comfort factor" - he may have to work too hard for Pardew - as his deal may be on a pay as you score/assist basis. Any new striker should be given that as his contract...and no difference if you set them up or score directly. You watch the number of goals we score then!

At least we can see him for what he was, a mercenary. No shame in that he wants what is best for his family. He would have been lauded as a legend if he had stayed.Only KD fits the bill in my eyes at present as he turned down bretter to stay with us.

How has he messed us around?

I imagine he realised that after BC didnt offer him a contract and there was limited interest from anywhere significant, he realised that by going back to SFC cap in hand saying he would stay, he would be offered a contract which he could ponder for a couple of weeks, all the while getting fitter in training and also gaining match fitness in preseason while affectively marketing himself to other teams. Showing them he can still score goals and do a job.

It has worked. Allegedly, Palar$e are now in for him and he can simply turn around and decline the contract.

Rasiak is in a different poistion as I mentioned earlier as he is still under contract.

I like your thinking!

Also suspect AP's work ethic does not fit in with Sterns more sanguine approach!

Not greatly worried by this provided we keep Big Greg!

At the end of last season we assumed that Stern would not be a Southampton player this season, he was out of contract, we were relegated and his wages had been too high even for a Championship club. Then we received the news that he had returned and intended to fight for a new contract, he began playing in friendlies and looked likely to stay. Now he has signalled his intention to look for work elsewhere. If he had just gone at the end of last season that would have been the end of it and so I feel that he has messed us around.

I do not think Rasiak wants to stay and will only do so to secure another year of wages if he doesn't get a better offer elsewhere. If he does stay I doubt his heart will really be in it. I would play SJ over GR since he is a better team player and seems to show a decent level of passion whatever club he is playing for.
