Taken for mugs again?

Saint Fan CaM

I have an uncomfortable feeling that the ST ticket deadline has once again co-incided beautifully with the start to the season. And like other previous years, we all stump up our ST money hoping for a rejuvenated and improved team, only to be informed that there's no money to improve the squad. AP's latest commentary in the Echo on playing kids is not too encouraging - heard that one before have we not?

I know we've just been saved and we should be eternally grateful and all that stuff, but I hate feeling that I've been taken for a mug once again by paying my hard-earned for a sub-standard product.

Come on Markus and Alan - give us something to really cheer about so we can start this next season of games on a high. PLEASE!

Calm down dear, we were told that reasonable injections would be made to the team and would be dependent on level. I have no reason to believe we are still skin flints.

AP has already said he is looking at the bosman market. So i will await with open eyes.

No need to start worrying.

I think patience is very much the word here. The lack of progress in strengthening the team is a worry but there is a good month before the window shuts.

all true..

I just think (and im sure i am not alone on this) we would have been acting a lot quicker in the market...

every game counts not just those after august 31st...

Well mine works out at £12:50ish a game - to watch Eastleigh costs a £10 so no I dont think we have been done.

I fully understand your concerns about player signings as I voiced exactly that this morning.

I am glad we seem to have addressed the Asst manager and backup staff today which will allow AP more time.

But surely the 'market' is very slow ATM anyway? Not THAT many signings in any of the divisions from what I've seen.

If ML is as shrewd as has been reported, he's probably suggested 'we' play a quiet hand so 'we' don't get ripped off by agents / players / clubs thinking we've got a small fortune to spend (or even a large one).

The amount of 'stop whinging' posts are also very annoying. We are entitled to vent our frustrations and will continue to do so.

We need 7 or 8 new players (imo) I am frustrated as im sure AP is.

The season starts next week not in Sept, so players are needed yesterday not end of Aug.

Look, either discuss the topic with an ounce of intelligence or f*ck off with your stupid infantile jibes sonny. This is a fans forum - get over it.

I think you have posted a ridiculous thread just support the team

Tis true in a way though CaM, not looking to stir things up at all but we have to give AP time in the job, he has only been in there for two weeks and has had no backroom staff.

As BTF stated the market is pretty slow, and as i said earlier he is looking at the bosman market which tends to move slow anyways, he has said he wants to bring players in, as has Cortese.

It is hard to have patience as i agree ATM we are not ready for the league, however we are in a much better situation then 2 months ago. We are just going to have to concede unfortunately that we may start the season on the back foot as other teams have had that extra stability time to assess, target and negotiate, a process we only started about 2-3 weeks ago.

Give it time

Wrong slant on things entirely. Under the old regime, we would have stumped up our dosh in March to get the best prices, whereas now we had until just a week before the new season to get good prices. Because our overheads would not have fallen under the old regime, it would undoubtedly have cost the same in this league as it did in the fizzy pop under the last shower, justified by us having another cup competition to enter.

I'm bewidered at anybody thinking dire thoughts before a ball has even been kicked in anger in a meaningful match this season.

Yes, this is a valid point. My point though was not directed particularly at AP or ML's strategy as such, just that in the past we've been royally shafted IMO and it would be great if this was not the case at the start of our bright new era.

I was probably one of the very first to renew my ST by the way, so I cannot be accused of not being swept up in a wave of optimism, however I am equally keen to see a change from the ways of the past when we were treated as mugs by you know who. It would just be nice not to have to wait until shelves were bare and the shop shutters were being brought down, before we got a cohesive team together if you get my drift.

Yep the market is dead......

Norwich signed 9

Brentford signed 6

Brighton signed 7

Exeter 6

MK Dons 7

Oldham 7

Teams that have bought 1 player or less = 2 (Us and Stockport)

Yes we are being conned, they are waiting to eeek as many Season Tickets out of the fans before then telling us ML is an asset stripping moron.

8 days til the season starts, a couple of signings could well be on the horizon, the Harding signing wasn't exactly well documented prior to its happening now was it

You know what all those other teams have in common?

They've all had a manager in place for more than a fortnight.

I'm concerned we haven't bought anyone - but not so concerned that I feel the need to start yet another thread on the subject.

Can't the mods just make one of the "we haven't bought anyone let's all panic" threads a sticky and lock the others?

what a stupd post...where does it say he doesn't ? why can't he voice his concerns on a Saints forum?

Thanks Ron - if I didn't support the team I would not have been one of the 1st to renew my ST and certainly would not bother to post my thoughts on here, knowing there would be the usual trolls throwing abuse. It's not as if I am in wrist slashing mode - I thought it was a perfectly valid observation given AP's comments in the Echo actually.

Give the new owners a chance

i think there is fair reason for both sides to be correct on this.We are on -10 and need a good start. If we are 15 points adrift after 3-4 games it becomes more of a mountain to climb and players will be loathe to join us.

On the other hand it is better for AP to take his time to select as we dont want to rush in and regret later.

I myself expected to have had 2-3 more signings by now, it is not a case of wingeing but a case of hoping we would be seeing the shape of a new team forming that would in turn push us on.

Nice use of sarcasm Stevo, i like it.

And true, we are under the paper talk radar !! If there is a sniff of a deal it is generally added towards the end of a three page piece on he top 4.

So as Stevo said, you will know when you know, probably won't hear much before.

I'd rather we wait and get the right players than just rush in and sign any old players.

Quite happy with Murty and Harding so far and glad we got Davis signed up for three years, it's a shame John slipped through but these things happen.

If we can sign a striker, left winger and a centre half before the deadline i'll be happy, if we find ourselves short or underperforming we can quite easily pick up a player or two on loan.

MK Dons appointed Ince a week before AP came to Saints.

MK Dons have signed 7 players!

Paul Ince knew a fair proportion of the players at MK dons from his last spell there so had to spend less time establishing what he had at his disposal. Plus of course MK Dons hadn't just emerged from administration.

Even so do you mean if we sign 7 players in the next week you'll be happy?

Do you promise to shut up about it until then?

Please say yes!

Well Pardew isn't going to sign a striker if he can't get rid of Saga & Rasiak and is in talks to buy one, IF they're sold. Which they haven't been yet. The fact is Pardew has had two weeks to look at the squad and compared to us fans he hasn't seen our side week in week out you need more than a days worth of training to assess his options of what he wants to do with the team. For instance he could see some youngsters as possible strikers such as Jake Thompson, and he wants to see what our strengths and weaknesses are.

And as you put it, you chose to buy a season ticket, this isn't the club taking you for a mug, and Southampton FC isn't a 'product'. Pardew is the sort of manager who can get the best out of lesser players as he did at West Ham and Reading. (perhaps not Charlton but he lost the dressing room there)

If you read the article about AP playing 'kids' he says he'd rather have many youngsters in the reserves or on loan to develop rather than in the first team if they're not ready, as it stands there's deals being tied up, he's managed to sort out an assistant and another coach, so they'll be more news on monday and the week before the Millwall game, i think he knows what his first XI for that game is, and he's going to make a few signings before and see how they fit in.

We played very well against a good SPL side, last time out so we're not in desperate need. What we do need which he is trying to address is strength in depth. Why don't we all give him some time and stop whinging because it's actually pathetic. We have a new owner we shouldn't have all this petty moaning, our job is to get behind the new owner, the new manager and play our part in making this club great again.

But how much later than these clubs did we start really preparing for L1?

How good are these players? I'd rather quality over quantity any day.

We do need some quality injected into the squad, and fast - I don't think anyone is denying that. But in the same vein, L1 is a different kettle fo fish to the championship, which as we found out to our cost, is arguably the most competitive in England.

Going back to the OP, I certainly don't feel like I've been taken for a mug - far from it in fact. "we've got our club back" to paraphrase all number of posters. I've got a great price ticket, when a few weeks ago, I had no idea what I was going to do come Saturday afternoon as Jeff Stelling and co. would be too much to bear.

I'm patient enough to still be looking forward to Millwall. ML, AP and co. have come in, and in some cases, we are starting from absolute zilch (the scouting network was cited for example -how can you buy players when this is not set up effectively? AP was out of the game for a while too.) and this clean slate to me is a good thing for the most part - the other part was in a right state (see the playing squad-this didn't just need honing, it needed a complete overhaul). It really does take time - the two reported appointments certainly bode well in terms of moving forward more swiftly now, with L1 experience, and a respected scout.

I can't, and won't, grumble. They saved us.

Rant over.

Oh, and Markus, thanks again.

I cant believe it, what has the new owner done for the Club, apart from saving it, clearing the debts, sacking a hopeless manager, appointing a new Manager, resigning our player of the season and offering reasonable priced season tickets? He needs to get his finger out, why haven't we signed 10 more players on mega long term contracts, after all he's been in charge 6 weeks and Pardew's been here nearly a month. The blokes worse than Rupert Lowe, he needs to go............

People are going way OTT with the whole we need 7 players...

I think the biggest shock is going to be who will be on the new Board. That's when we'll see just how much we've been taken for mugs. Patience is indeed needed but I'm not at all impressed by the lack of ambition shown by Pardew's back up team. Seems to me more like he's avoiding taking on anyone who might pose a threat to himself as manager in future. I just can't can't imagine what some of the young players are thinking about what's being said. I'm hoping Pardew was thinking more of the Ollie Lancashires than those other youngsters that give the all for the club.

There are a lot of sarcastic people on this board......We are looking at Bosmans and so are a lot of the other teams and the best ones are slowly but surely being snapped up....

If we end up with Jermaine Wright because we were patient I would be a more than a little disappointed. We have top facilities, a good manager and a billionaire owner and if we can't get good league 1/ championship players there is definately a problem.

I am very happy that we have now some back room staff but we all know our squad has a lot of frailties so a couple more players including Murty before next Saturday would be very happilly received.
