A good piece about pardew

If that article is a fair appraisal of Pardew then it seems as though he has learnt something from the experience.

He is criticised there for not getting the team solid and building from the back. Well, looking at our defence it's our best since we were in the Prem so congrats to him there.

The goals will come and we will only need 1 or 2 to win most games.

We'll be heading up the League in no time. Well done Alan!

I haven't read the thread but I would imagine the Charlton board are equally cupable by giving Pardew free reign on signings with no plan. Thirty five players during his time at Charlton. All of this reminds me of Burley's time here and shows how important a job Nicola Cortese has at the club in guiding the club to bigger and better things in a controlled sustainable manner.

It actually looks like the opposite of what we have.

A solid base has been built from the back. A solid spine created. Experienced players and leaders brought in.

In the article it claims they were in second place in the league but performances were unconvincing. Yet our performances are good and show promise, yet the results aren't there and the league position is terrible.

So it's like he has learned from past lessons and has approached things differently here. Instead of early success, points and wins with an unconvincing performance, we seem to be building gradually and improving with each step. This suits me fine. It's a long-term plan we need....

What a terrific and honest piece of writing.

I hope ML and Nicola read this and have a plan B.

I am sure AP has learnt valuable lessons and if Fergie knows anything then AP and Saints could be a great partnership.

Seemingly he has already learnt that building from the back is vital.

Good luck AP we all want the same thing. SUCCESS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

"His type is somewhat familiar, small personality, big ego, useless in bed. Women everywhere would have had a lot of laughter when discussing him."

Now pull me up if you disagree but I don't think Pards' abilities at doing rudies in any way affect his skill as a manager. And this opinion was formed when the Charlton fan in question met him whilst on a caravan holiday. Hope I never meet them, wouldn't want to be psychosexually analysed and then discussed on a football blog.

The thing I struggle with is why everyone seems to be taking note of what Charlton fans have to say about him. Thats one club were he didn't do such a good job.

Its a bit like listening to Celtic fans about Strachan, they all seem to hate him now, yet we'd some people here would have him back at the drop of a hat. Also Coventry fans aren't exactly fond of him either.

No one talks about his success with Reading and at West Ham having got them both promoted. He was seconds away from winning the FA Cup with West Ham and took them into Europe as a result, which was exactly the same as Strachan's achievement with us. Strachan left on a high with us, who knows what would have happened if he stayed. He obviously saw the writing on the wall. The chances are we still may have got relegated, then there would be people on here telling everyone how crap Strachan was.

Don't get me wrong I think Strachan was great for us, and he still probably would be if he came back, and we wouldn't take much notice of Celtic or Coventry fans if they told us he was no good.

So why listen to Charlton fans?

Fans of East Stirlingshire think Alex Ferguson was terrible in his tenure there.

Or to put it another way, comparing a manager's success or lack of at another club to our own is irrelevant as every club and situation is unique.

The only fact is that AP should be judged solely on his long term performance at SFC.

i think we are commenting on the article, as it was the subject of this thread.

Your point is valid regarding how some managers are hated at one club but held in high regard at another, but until you mentioned it was not the subject being discussed.

I and probably most people reading the charlton forums comments would be reading it with the full awareness that what is written need not apply to Pardews future success or other wise here.

I just found their comments of interest, as much on the human leval of how exposed ones character is to fans.

If there is a similar thread on the reading or west ham forum that would be of equal interest. Then perhaps you could post how we all take there positive posts [probably] as gospel and how we shouldnt be comlacent blah blah.

Continuity is important, injuries aside obviously. New signings should be integrated into the side, not thrown in. Obviously certain areas needed addressing ASAP such as full back and to replace Wotton.

Swindon was shocking. He started 4-5-1, with Paterson on the right, Wrong choice of personnel and wrong positions, was crying out for 4-4-2 from the off IMO. I was moaning at a lack of subs when it obviously was NOT working, Pato and Lambo up top is not an option, made obvious on Saturday.

Not sure what your getting at about Mifsud? I didn't start the thread, just agreed he would be a good signing, especially when Agyemang is being linked....

And WTF does any of this have to do about the dutch farce? This is about AP. After 6 games this is a shccking start, however you dress it up. IF we get relegated (which there is a serious danger of if you take those rose tinted specs off) then it will be down to AP and his choices.#

I don't want him out. TDD doesn't want him out. I want to see him buck is ideas up and get us winning. No excuses

There is not one of us that do not want us to buck our ideas up and win.....BUT there are a few of us that are willing to give him more than 6 games to do this. There have been big improvements in the squad and some positions been strengthened.

If you look at last Saturdays game no-one was more ****ed off than I was at watching us fail to score but that game saw us without his 2 main choice strikers and a young lad that is so far off form its criminal to play him but we had no other choice - not even on the bench.

As for the other comments if you read you post mine was answering it....you said in response to non-league signings....we haven't actually signed anyone but apparently we were after Exodus - no proof anywhere that we were apart from a 3rd rate football site that you seem to use as a weapon against AP.

You intimated that AP was ruining this club I pointed out the main reasons for me why this club was ruined...nothing to do with AP apart from the fact he is trying to put it back together even this is a very slow process.

So you think we will be relegated after 6 games .....there are still loads of games left I am so glad you have written us off already. I may have rose tinted glasses in your eyes but in mine they are just realistic that we were crap last season, had no pre-season, bought in new replacements that are far better than what we had and can see us getting a win sooner rather than later then we will be away.

So being a doom and gloom merchant offer us an alternative to what we have already and how you think you would do better than AP.

Never said i would do better than AP, just think he should, all things considered, to have managed to make a bigger dent in the-10 than already has.

10 games and not on 0 yet, would that be more worrying for people?

Yes most people would expect us to be on -something but then again I am trying to look on the positive side as I can see reasons why its been such a poor start.

If we are still -something by the end of October then questions will need to be asked as he will have his side settled by then.

Charlton are held up as a shining beacon on here yet their manager did't win a game for 20 matches....its hardly AP fault that we started on -10 and has that added pressure.

As things stand, it is going to be at least 8 games to have reached 0 anyway, ( at least 9 if we don't win at The Valley ), and a minimum of 9 before we catch any other team, assuming all other results go our way.

This was always going to be a long haul, and the most realistic expectation has always been survival in L1 this term, promotion push next season.

Who are the unconvincing short term loans? Trottman who has been close to mom every game? or Mellis who has had a poor half, ok game and good game. There are no others.

Signed non league players?

so far his signings have been;

this league top scorer, v in demand for £1m

Murty last club Reading

Jaidi -last club Birmingham (prem)

Harding -last club Reading -150 games in CCC level

Wiago - Florientina

Hammond - Colchester Capt

Mellis -loan from Chelsea

Pretty good signings - and not one from lower level

Ruined club? Better supported, better balanced squad, better depth in coaches and scouting etc

Which team have you been following?

I wrote that article 10 months ago, and on reflection, i still stand by it.

I think the reason we were / still are so bitter and disappointed was not the fact that he failed, but the manner in which he did so, and alienating everyone in the process, which is staggering because we really rollewd out the red carpet for him when he arrived.

Anyway, its in the past night, and i'm sure he won't screw up with you quite as spectacularly as he did with us.

We have to give him more time before judging! That said, i think some managers do get lucky despite themselves, and fall down when they try and change things, and I thought Pardew was one of those that got lucky at west ham. Still he's made decent signings and things off the pitch are receiving attention also, with new staff only recently appointed. I don't think it is reasonable to ask for more at this stage.

I know fans of Coventry and Celtic may not be too kind if they speak of Strachan, but no Strachan bashing I've ever heard ran him down so much as a person as the opinions of Pardew do. This alone does worry me a little, that so many people consider him to be an absolute **** with his head either up his own arse or if not there, buried in the sand.

Here's hoping he's learnt from the past and goes on to be a favourite here. 3 points on Saturday would go down a treat!

Don;t know about everyone on here, but I think I can spot the difference between a sound team that just isn't winning and a team being soundly beaten week in week out, without any hope of survival.

What I have seen this season tells me that we have players that have the ability, as individuals, and as a team. Lapses in concentration and a lack of confidence are slowly becoming more worrying. It is this lack of cohesion and confidence to 'get the job done' that is coming through in the performances. It's almost as if they are trying to force the issue, rather than let it come more naturally.

But, I believe that a win or two will change that belief. Getting onto positive points will be another boost and the sooner we start winning, the easier the hill will be to climb. September is an important month in my eyes, as coming out of September, you will know what we've got, and that'll be it until January.

So, yes, there is reason to feel concerned or apprehensive, but, have a little faith, for 4 more weeks, and hopefully those green shoots will start coming through.

I have very similar first impressions of the article and overall sentiments. However, perhaps the Addicks fans responded intelligently because it was a well written piece. We do get sensible responses here to good articles and silly responses to silly threads.

It was a little shocking at how scathing they were of Pardew, but I'll bet Coventry fans were at least partly negative towards Strachan by the time he left. We were probably critical of Sturrock or even Stuart Gray who, despite his sacking, achieved very good things at Northampton.

The point is that managers can be very well respected in one place and strongly criticised in another.

As people have noted, Pardew seems to have learnt from his mistakes, he's been patient to the point of frustrating many of us on here and the idea that he is a 'chancer' just doesn't fit in with what I've seen or heard from him. I'll bet it would give him a real buzz to win on the weekend.

Surely there is quite an obsession with personel when talking about our team at the moment. This is the clever AP rhetoric which he has spread quite convincingly since he has been here. The idea that it's all about players and nothing to do with the technical side of tactics and those tactical choices which have to be honest been suspect so far.

There has been an awful lot of long balls - so far - more than I can remember for many years in fact. Possesion of the ball has been a low priority - so far - narrow formations and tactics have prevented our build up play from maturing into structured attacks.

Ap has a very long way to go before he will start to get the team to perform consistantly from what I have seen so far.

So, yes, his transfers have looked good, however without a very good tactical manager one wonders where we are heading.

I know the 'in' words are patience, give him a chance, we are only a win away from turning into a winning team etc ....... lets see - i'm trying very hard to agree with the 'majority' - so far!
