Team for Saturday

According to Saints Player, both Wayne Thomas and Papa Waigo are out. How does that affect the line-up and options?

Presumably Jaidi, Trotman and Harding all start with James going to RB. Does that mean Lallana, Schneiderlin, Hammond, Mills in the middle with Saga and Lambert upfront. Will that midfield combo work? What if Saga doesn't look like he's up for it or Schneiderlin struggles with the tempo of the match? Would anyone take a punt with Holmes or Mellis?

Late fitness test for Waigo suggests his injury isn't quite as bad as the doom merchants like Glasgow Saint & Alpine thought!! Heaven help us!!

Does that mean Pardew's not a complete numpty for signing injured players or is our season still flying off into the sunset as a result of that ankle knock?!

Bad news for our defence as with that back four last Saturday we at least don't look like we'll be letting in many so any weakening there is a major worry assuming Murty isn't fit. Can Perry or Trotman play at RB? Playing James there will give Carlisle the ability to get through a perceived weak link.

I think we should give Lallana a free role up front behind Lambert. With Schneiderlin and Hammond in the centre assuming Gillett is still out of favour with Pardew but we have a major issues with width. Mills obviously but if you play Lallana in one of these roles he is ineffective and exposes the fullback by cutting in to often and worse still it means Saga or Patterson up front. Disinterested and unfit experience or gamble on a largely unknown and unproven inexperience? Gillett needs to play IMO and play Schneiderlin on the right but obviously don't know what the issue is with Gillett.

I'm sure Pardew has the answers but a long trip to Carlisle will be a point well earned and nice as it would be I have no expectations of winning because of the injuries.

It may suggest he is desperate not to play Saga or Patterson. Even if Papa is injured Pardew does have other options bar the obvious ones and Lallana needs to be given the opportunity to prove himself in free roaming / attacking role because I think he is getting close to the end of the rope and needs to start delivering.

Perry could do a job at right back, although I think Lloyd James would offer more in an attacking sense.

Personally, I'd go with:

GK: Kevin

RB: James

LB: Harding

CB: Jaidi

CB: Trotman

RM: Melis

LM: Mills

CM: Schneiderlin

CM: Hammond

AMC: Lallana

ST: Lambert

I'd go with that, although I'd have Kelvin Davis in goal. Saga is pants, I'd rather have Paterson playing!

How about...

-------------------Davis------------------

---Mills---Trotman---Jaïdi---Harding---

Lallana-Hammond-Schniederlin-Holmes

---------------Saga-Lambert------------

Papa in for Lallana if fit.

Harding and Mills could switch.

Lallana for Saga if Papa is fit, or he could go to left wing and move Holmes to the bench.

I think he will play Gillet instead of Schniederlin

Davis

James-Trotman-Jaidi-Harding

Waigo-Schnierderlin-Hammond-Holmes

Lambert-Saga

RB is going to be a real problem with Murty and Thomas out, hopefully not for long as many of us know that James isn't great at RB, think he does an O.K job in CM but at RB i've seen him out of position too many times and too slow to compensate for this.

Can Trotman play RB for a game?

If Waigo doesn't make it for Sat, then I could see a switch in formation, the same back 5 followed by:

Schnierderlin-Hammond-Wotton/Gillet

Lallana-Holmes

Lambert

Why on earth would you play Joseph Mills right back?

"...With Graeme Murty still on crutches, Thomas’ absence at right back means Lloyd James is likely to be drafted into the position he filled so ably last season...."

The most that can be said about James at RB last season was that at least he didn't get any worse as the season went on.

I thought he was one of last seasons most improved players tbh.

at the start of the season he was what he was, a young kid thrust into a professional league well before his time.

But he got to grips with it...and i have no worries about him going to RB tbh, only thing we'll miss is the extra height Thomo gives us defending set pieces.

Slightly uncharitable of me- he did improve after christmas. and seems more willing to get forward and get crosses in from a deeper position (more so than from RM where he seems uncomfortable with being the most forward player - see Yeovil last week). Hope Im proved wrong but doesn't strike me as a player who can adapt at short notice to new positional demands.

That team in the echo still makes me think we will be on minus points come the end of tomorrow.. :(

And I am convinced that we will be on +1 come 5 o clock tomorrow, whatever the final team may be. The players injured are not part of the nucleus of the side (Murty apart) James will be OK at right back and Waigo has,as yet, proved the square root of sod all. I'm putting us down for a 3-1 win with 2 from Saga and 1 from ...someone else.

Yes I agree an easy win followed by another on Tuesday any team will do

Perhaps Pardew will call me complacent but who cares

I reckon its every aspiring footballers dream to play regularly for a League side, no matter how shyte that side may be. James may not have been ready, but I bet he loved every bloody minute of it, and of course it's made him the better footballer this year. A good footballer is one that keeps quiet and plays where the manager tells him to - his versitility will do wonders for us in the future.
