Exeter & Luton

yes

It was the FA Cup. For Luton the game was their cup final after years of decline and playing at non league teams stadiums all season. For Exeter although it was boxing day they will have other days out this season. Big away following for Exeter in any case.

Peterborough took 8,000 to Spurs. Barrow took over 6,000 to Sunderland in the FA Cup.

Also Luton "may" also have more fans than Exeter.

(sorry Delldays ;))

sorry, I was actually interested in why approx 12,000 more Saints fans turned up for Exeter rather than Luton.

Against Luton 19k attendance (3000 away fans)

Against Exeter 31k attendance (1800 away fans)

why the big difference?

if you are asking why the big difference between the two overall attendances rather than away attendances that is easy. The Exeter game was on boxing day, a popular football day, it was a league match meaning 13k tickets are sold before you even start (ST holders) and many tickets were sold on the back of decent form.

The FA cup game is not part of the season ticket, so many ST holders don't go...

1) Because it is traditional to goto a Boxing day match with family. Around the country Boxing day crowds were all generally alot higher than normal.

2) It was a league match.

3) Luton are a non league team Exeter are not.

Of course it does!

Who would you rather see Southampton play Man Utd in the league or Weymouth in the FA cup?

Exeter are just further down the scale than Man Utd but still above a non league team in the cup.

Really? I bet there are a number of saints fans who still think Luton are in the league and Exeter in the non league!!!!

what about the excitement of the cup!

Also the same number (ish) of people watched saints v Exeter and Saints V Man Utd at the beginning of 2009. As I said to the guy next to me Man Utd and Exeter have the same effect on Saints :p

PLUS of course,

Luton were even a Div 1 (now Premiership) side between 1982-3 and 1991-2, when they were relegated. At their peak they finished 7th (86-87) and 9th (85-86) and often ABOVE Saints, They twice slaughtered us at Kenilworth Road

0-7 in 85/86 and 1-6 in 88/89 - with advent ofall seater theiri crowds were reduced to around. 12000

Despite their recent sad relegation, they had a good fan base and many have memories of better times.

Exeter has (I think ) never been above L1 status and always had a samll ground. Traditionally Boxing Day / Easter fixtures are always a day out, hence the travelling fans, and Saints is "almost" a derby fixture on the South Coast.

We've discussed this in several other threads. Half of the stadium was closed and some blocks were not opened until 2 days before the match so a large number of season ticket holders were not able to buy their normal seats for this game and made other plans. Add to this the ticketing system problems on the 31st December and 1st January, which was also a Bank Holiday, and it is no surprise that the attendance was much reduced. I think this accounts for several thousand no-shows. It's no suprise really - if you close half the stadium you'll get a smaller crowd.

Both attendances were outstanding the away support at Colchester was 1800 + as well and that was a tricky journey took us best part of 3 hours. Our support this season for numbers has been 1st class just wish it was more vocal and we slow down the signing at St marys away has been better but you cant fault the numbers we are putting CCC clubs & some prem to shame including the blue few Cod Snogging wierdo's

I made it to the Exeter game because I was in Southampton (something to do with the day before).

I didn't go to the Luton game because I wasn't anywhere near Southampton, had I been in Hampshire I'd have been at the game.

I think the answer you are looking for is Christmas.

Numbers wise this season away from home has been superb but agree noise wise it has been disappointing.

I expect we'll take close to our full allocation at the next 4 away games, Millwall, MK Dons, Brentford and Exeter. All fairly short journeys, the latter two with the added appeal of terracing, but small allocations.

I wonder if not being in your regular seats makes a difference to the singing? Some people have to feel comfortable with the crowd around them in order to open their mouths. SoccerDad, who doesn't normally come to games, was surprised not to hear OWTS more often. However, we could hear the singing loud and clear from the Itchen, specially when they sang "what a load of f***ing c***." Nipper, the cheeky wotsit, asked what they were singing. When I refused to repeat it he said, "Well, then, if you won't say it, can you act it out?" Bloke in front nearly got my hot drink down his neck.

You need to realise that like us, Exeter are also better than Man utd. Witness the fact that both us and Exeter only lost to Leeds by an odd goal away from home, whilst Manure lost to them at home. If you consider its harder to play away from home the logic is clear that manure are not as good as Saints or even Exeter. Simples.

Who would I rather see Saints play against, Exeter or Manure, again I would pick Exeter, since I prefer to watch Saints win. I do not go to games to see the opposition, as a Saints supporter I go to watch Saints.

Because, for the Luton match, the Club were only originally going to open up half the ground

Nearer the match, when it was obvious that more seats were needed, they opened up Kingsland

However, IMHO, the negative effect was that only just under 19K actually came

IMHO, IF they had treated the match the same as a League fixture, the crowd would have been circa 23000

(A lot of Kingsland fans were VERY annoyed:cool:

do you really need to be told..?

by asking this question in the first place...I seriously fear any answer would go straight over your head

I see 'stop acting like a c**t' wasn't one of your new years resolutions.

I was surprised how big the Exeter attendance was and slightly disappointed in the Luton one. So valid question I would have thought.

I'm amazed anyone could be "slightly disappointed" with that attendance. It was, comparably, fantastic and only just under our league average. Many other clubs saw a dramatic drop from their usual gates (I wonder what the skates may have pulled had they been playing a non-league side?). We're not anything special but it shows we have a very loyal hardcore.

You were disappointed with 19k against a non league team a few days after Christmas?

Middlesbrough vs Man City got 12k

Wigan vs Hull got 5k

Sheff Utd vs QPR got 11k

Pompey vs Coventry got 12k

Bolton vs Lincoln got 11k

etc etc

19k against non league Luton was a great turnout! Cheer up :)

Agreed. Many of us exiled fans are usually either 'home' for Christmas and away for New Year or visa versa. Because the calendar threw up the first Saturday of 2010, the day after NYD, I couldn't make it because I was not in the area. I went to the Exeter game and would normally have done the 3rd round as well, if the Saturday had fallen on the 6th or 7th January.

**** me what's the matter with you lot, I thought, especially after the excellant Exeter attendance that we would get low 20's for the Luton game, FA 3rd and all that, I'm surprised Luton didn't take up the full 15%. I swear this FA cup down turn is a new thing.

I see you didn't comment on me getting the Exeter one wrong as well, you just want to have a go at something that might burst the brilliant fan slapalong. Yes we are great waaahoo, the best south coast team by miles, success helps and we are not that insecure that we need to jump on anything 'slighty' negative.

Football as well as the games is a social thing, I enjoy meeting up with my mates, and when I was told I couldn't get my seat in the kingsland and as we all live far away from each other we could not get tickets next to each other on line or by phone, so I couldn't be arsed to go and sit with complete strangers. This was replicated by a lot of season ticket holders around me, hence the major reason for the low attendance.

I would say that the closure of the Kingsland and others accounted for a couple of thousand lost sales. It would be an easy task for the TO to determine how many of the ST holders bought tickets for this game.

www.viamichelin.com, actually... ;)

From experience I would say 3 hours from Exeter and 2 from Luton.

Ah, but you're talking post M1 extension and have still taken no account of the M25 widening...

Luton's natural rival is Watford.

Our natural rival in this league is Exeter.

Next year it will be Pompey again, assuming they are not out of business altogether... ;)

You would have if we'd been playing Man Utd or Chelsea etc.

Brentford – 69 miles

Yeovil – 75 miles

Bristol – 78 miles

Charlton – 87 miles

Millwall – 91 miles

Luton – 95 miles

Leytonstone (Orient) - 96 miles

Exeter – 112 miles

The things we do - bought to you courtesy of Multimap :)

Er,

Exeter - Southampton 114 miles.

Luton - Southampton 96 miles?

That is irrelevant.

Bristol Rovers and Yeovil are closest to a derby game in League One for Exeter. Southampton would be next and hence why it was a Boxing day game(FL like close matches on boxing day)

For Luton although it is closer than Exeter there are alot more clubs closer to it(London etc) than Southampton.
