saint_bert Posted 9 January, 2010 Share Posted 9 January, 2010 Now obviously AP knows far better than me. But this would be my take on our strongest starting 11 Kelvin Murty Fonte Jaidi Harding Papa Morgan Hammond Lallana Lambert Connolly Now imo we are good enough in terms of quality. S-Clarke Posted 9 January, 2010 Share Posted 9 January, 2010 I hope Murty can stay fit when he comes back, he's our best RB when he plays. It's not a bad team at all - but we'll need to find a place to play Stock he'd walk into the team. I think Pard's favored formation is the 4-5-1/4-3-3 - this is the formation we have played the best football in and have looked exciting. We had wotton playing the holding role for us - but i can see morgan excelling in that role, as a ''Pirlo'' type deep sitting playmaker. With Hammond and Stock driving from midfield to the edge of the box, it has the makings of a very functional and consistent midfield - which is something we're crying out for. Saint_clark Posted 9 January, 2010 Share Posted 9 January, 2010 Connolly is not as injury prone as people assume, just because he was out for a long time. Same as assuming he is slow - he is far from it. Probably the paciest player we have after Antonio and Waigo.
SNSUN Posted 9 January, 2010 Share Posted 9 January, 2010 The team looks good enough but you can never strengthen too much. Pardew can obviously see that. The more players we sign of a quality better than what we have, the more chance of promotion this or next season. Failing that, we'll still have dozens of little investments running around all over the pitch!

Arizona Posted 10 January, 2010 Share Posted 10 January, 2010 It's not really about how good we are anymore as far as the playoffs are concerned. We need to outperform at least the 7 teams immediately above us to have any chance of a playoff spot when the Southend fans get on the coach home. Also the the team is, the larger the points deficit. I hate to put a downer on things, but if we signed Messi, Xavi and Kaka we'd still have a challenge on our hands overhauling 10 points in 20 odd games. saint_bert Posted 10 January, 2010 Author Share Posted 10 January, 2010 I think my original point may have been misleading. Obviously if we buy more players this month put them into the team. I shall bump this thread along once signings have happened. What I meant was we really should not be fearing ANYONE now. If Pardew is serious by saying our aim is the top 6, we have to start dispensening with teams the way Norwich and Leeds are doing. Thats against the big teams too. A win at Millwall would be a good start
dubai_phil Posted 10 January, 2010 Share Posted 10 January, 2010 Not good enough yet. Our midfield balance needs sorting and we need a backup striker. Agree. If we lose Lambert we have to change our whole style of play. Also, with Lallana playing we get regularly exposed down our left flank often leaving Harding with nobody between him and the opposition corner flag. We are close, but may have too much to do this season to make up the gap.

mulletsaint Posted 10 January, 2010 Share Posted 10 January, 2010 Worried about Connollys and Murtys fitness, and Schneiderlins dependability/consistency. You, worried? Surely not? The big surprise is that I agree with you. Don't stop buying now chaps, especially if we're talking about good championship quality players. I still believe we can push for the playoffs this season and if we can eliminate more of our weaknesses the better chance we will have.
eelpie Posted 10 January, 2010 Share Posted 10 January, 2010 bookies still have 6 teams more likely for promotion; Leeds Norwich Charlton Colchester Huddersfield Swindon Then us, most about level with; Millwall MK Dons Pre Fonte I would say that we were most likely to end up ninth given our weakness in giving away soft goals, and that we have to make up ten points in 22 games on the top eight. But I expect us to be more consistent at the back now, and if any from Swindon, Dons and Millwall slip up, we have a chance of making the play-offs. We are where we are because we have not yet succeeded in beating the top teams. So Millwall away and Huddersfield at home are going to be very important. In fact matches against anyone above is are going to be six-pointers from now on.
