The non-Marcus Tribute thread for thrashing out stuff

All.

I mentioned that we should leave the Marcus tribute thread as a tribute and start one for questions, theories, disagreements, discussions on what a wnger Puncheon is (or not) etc.

So here it is.

I'll start.

Hearing the Watch story, do you really think someone like Marcus would be friends with the kind of person Nicola is made out to be? Or have some of us got Nicola wrong?

Also who is the: 'To Echo.....DO NOT put a picture of the "photo opportunity" councillor, idiot, at this service either before or afterwards.' that Lone Ranger refers to on the Echo site? (http://www.dailyecho.co.uk/news/8337888.Hundreds_turn_out_for_Markus__memorial)

And finally, Do you think my Statue Idea has any merit?

I think we got him wrong. With regards to the photographer ban for example, there was a rumour that the club wanted to ensure there were no photos taken of Saint Markus looking unwell.

If that is true, I think it shows how deep their friendship was, and I hope the Sun has the decency to drop its stupid little crusade..

It all depends on what people view as getting 'Nicola all wrong.'

Personally i think some communication was required way before the season ticket scheme was pulled. I have issues with the £3 charge on buying tickets for those fans that live outside the area and i dont think the spate with Le tissier et all was needed.

Apart from that i am not interested in anything else.

I think that Nicola is simply running the club as a business. With the exception of the spat with Le Tiss (which I think has gone on too far and too long) I do think he has got all the decisions right from a business perspective. This does not mean that I like paying a booking fee - I hate them when booking any sort of ticket but I can't deny that from a business perspective it makes sence. I don't know enough to comment on the photography saga to really comment but again from a business perspective I can see the logic behind it.

My general feeling is that we went for so long being run very badly by messers Lowe and co that I find this an honest and refeshing change. For me the stories that we are hearing about Nicola's relationship with Markus and about Markus himself re-affirm that honesty and I have to say I find it a breath of fresh air. I hope that this as much as anything else is Marcus' legacy for the club in the long term.

Kindly avuncular old gent befriends hip young gunslinger to do his dirty work for him maybe? You can't see Markus falling out with the Echo or getting involved in some of the stunts that Cortese has can you? In all walks of life unlikely pairings occur. I don't think it is strange that they were close. What is more important now is how is Cortese viewed by the people who own the purse strings.

I really cannot fathom your negativity about all this.

And I would like to know on what basis you describe Markus as "avuncular"

F*** Em. I can't understand the problem. They gave us nothing before, as they do now. Ok maybe the echo should be allowed, as I hear alot of fans got there news from them, But as far as I'm concerned... Well, I'm not concerned.

this. I cant understand why its even an issue on here.

As far as the press photography issue goes, the only person on a stupid little crusade is Cortese. In playground parlance, "he started it". But lord knows there is enough threadage on that here already. I think we've all established our positions.

To me they appear to have been an unlikely pairing. Some of Cortese's actions appeared a bit heavy handed and unnecessarily confrontational which doesn't really fit with the Christian image I had of Markus. Nevertheless, clearly they were good friends so maybe Cortese was different personally than he was in business?

lol at the person who doesn't know what avuncular is! Or perhaps you forgot what side of the argument you were on today? Do you argue with yourself? I bet you do / don't....please delete as the mood takes you...

That is a good question, How do we know? Most billionaire in the public eye must have a public persona, so how do we know that Marcus really wasn't hard nosed?

In all that, how do we know Duncan Bannatyne isn't a pussy cat? Or Alan Suger is a push over?

We don't. All we know is what we see and the gut feeling we get.

Don't really care what Nicola is like as long as he does his job of getting us in the Premiership.

Last time we ( or a vocal minority, to be precise) made a decision based on personality over ability we decided to appoint a rookie nobody manager over one of the most successful managers in the country, we then crashed from grace in spectacular fashion.

Because that is how he comes across to me Alps (and many others apparently). Mr Cortese may have many noble attributes but being avunclar isn't one of them (to me).

This whole post has a poorly-veilled nasty tone to it, imo.

As for avuncular - perhaps it is down to the sort of uncles one has had, but my perception of avuncular is a reasonably kind and generous nature but with more than an element of grumpiness and perhaps even short-temperedeness about them. There is no evidence of Markus being grumpy or short-tempered.

Just looked up "avuncular" in a dictionary and the definition does not refer to grumpiness or short-temper, so forget my question.

I don't know either person Alps. But I got a different feeling to Markus than I do for Nicola. There is no reason why people become friends, they just do. But I am not going to change my opinion of someone because another person liked them.

And you've got to know NC well, havent you ??

How ironic, you casting judgements on him, considering the way you used to have a go at me about Burley.

ROTFLMAO.

That would be the rookie manager that got his next team promoted as champions from League 1 at the first attempt?

Oh, but that was because he had unlimited funds right?

Not like us at all...

You really are a one dimensional muppet aren't you Dalek?

If it is true that Cortese was trying to stop Markus being photod while being ill then that is quite sad really. He would of taken all that grief from the media and people on here unfairly. Which would show the type of guy he really is. Guess time will tell if it's true or not.

It seems obvious that Markus and Nicola shared a deep and trusting relationship.

Sometimes opposites attract. Sometimes birds of a feather flock together.

I don't know which. I don't know why. And I very much doubt that it could ever be understood other than by people very close to them.

I have always thought you deluded by not listening to the reasons why your messiah was never re-appointed but this proves you are actually deranged!!!

Can you explain when he was 'successful'? Certainly not at Spurs or Wolves!!!

As a player manager

Chelsea

* FA Cup runner-up: 1994

[edit] As a manager

Tottenham Hotspur

* Worthington Cup runner-up: 2001–02

So...on another topic (because the Markus tribute forum ISN'T the right place to start criticising others) - I find it really bizarre (and bad mannered) if Puncheon did actually turn up in jeans. It shows a marked lack of respect. I am surprised he was even allowed to go. This was a time for team unity as well as for paying due respect to Markus Leibherr and you can bet your bottom dollar that at any other club "function" he would have been instructed to have worn a suit (Can't remember...but I bet he didn't turn up at Wembley in a pair of jeans!). I have to admit I haven't taken to Puncheon at all - he seems a bit of a misfit to me and I would only see him as backup to Lallana, but obviously Pardew has seen more in him than that. Will be interesting to see if anything comes of this, but for now, my respect for Puncheon has definitely slid further down.
