I'm not trying to complain because he backs up what he says with the team visibly improving each week. I honestly think we will carry on improving and push back up to the promotion spots so it's more of a niggle than something that hacks me off. There is, if you watch it on saints player, says its a matter for the police but it seems he has taken internal action. Also mentioned he may look to bring in someone else on loan. Completely disagree with the thread, he talks alot of sense, just seems very down to earth. Edited 7 October, 2010 by Appy

CB Fry Posted 7 October, 2010 Share Posted 7 October, 2010 Most managers waffle to be fair - there is only so many ways you can say no that much in different ways. That said, Adkins does have his fair share of verbal tics. "Simple as that" and "win a game of football" are already mentioned, but he also does that "at this football club" line a lot, which always seems to bug me. Dave Jones and Tony Pulis do it as well, Jones especially. "at this football club" repeated about five times in every interview, just in case any of were under the impression that Dave Jones was managing a greengrocers. Prince Jazzbo Posted 7 October, 2010 Share Posted 7 October, 2010 Most managers say pretty much the same thing, they all use the standard cliche's, I think you learn them when you do the UEFA Coaching Badges. There's a course module called 'Giving Effective Pre and Post Match Interviews'. Although I thought Steve Wigley took it to a higher level during his tenure, as every interview he gave was identical to the one before. But, if I remember rightly he hadn't done the UEFA Badges. It's a silly thing to moan about but it's one of those things that bugs from time to time. There are not many that can interview like WGS though and as you say, most managers have the auto-repeat answers ready for the same old questions every week. It's good to feel confident that we have a manager that will get us playing great footy and a few repeated lines in an interview won't make that any different. lambertsrightleg Posted 7 October, 2010 Share Posted 7 October, 2010 when i was in canada I loved waffles with maple syrup and whipped butter. on the nigel adkins front. he's quality, never says anything negative, always positive and uplifting. when eddie howe took over at bournemouth the changing rooms were plain white and bare. the first thing he did was put up players pictures and positive quotes on the walls. that same group of players were totally transformed, you may not like the waffle that comes out of his mouth but as long as he can find a way to make the players feel 10 feet tall i couldn't really care

dubai_phil Posted 7 October, 2010 Share Posted 7 October, 2010 Lol at the thread. Like Arsene Wenger never waffles on and on about much the same every week, didn't see le incident, was on the other side of the pitch, I felt the referee was less than perfect, I think the Stoke players were a leetle physical. I'm sure he just has his secretary cut and paste from the previous encounter the previous season most the time. Which is why I never listen to any interviews except post match. What are they ACTUALLY going to say about an upcoming match? Oh yes Tranmere, easy game should walk them, I'll play 4-3-2-1 with Lambert pushed onto their CB's and keep our two men wide and of course we will play it wide through defence from the back. How else can you politely say "Oh yes xyz, easy game should walk them" making it sound as if "it will be a tough test" when you have to do it around 45 times a year

What he has to say in general is fantastic and very positive. I would have thought he is similar when talking to the players but without minding his manners for the camera's. The boy done well Posted 7 October, 2010 Share Posted 7 October, 2010 The skill of a good politican is to give a long reply to a question but never answer it. NA is a bit long-winded as Scunny fans said he would be (they obviously found it quite endearing) but if you listen carefully enough he does usually give a reply. In fact, I've just listened to his pre-Saturday interview on Saintsplayer and thought it was pretty good-even reasonably concise at times. He handled the questions about Barnard pretty well even though they weren't particularly easy to answer (disciplined for a breach of club's code of conduct and it's now in the hands of the police). Also said another loanee may be on the cards and that we'd be strengthening in Jan and that he enjoys a great relationship with NC. All said fairly concisely I thought though the interview does run to 11 minutes!

Saints Pedro Posted 7 October, 2010 Share Posted 7 October, 2010 I'm sorry but giving a thread a title of 'Wafffle!!' is hardly going to encourage reasoned debate as it reads like an attack on our new Manager even if you tried to explain yourself later. Liquidshokk Posted 7 October, 2010 Share Posted 7 October, 2010 Can't believe the grief being given to the OP about this. He merely brought this up as an observation of his interview techniques. Fwiw I absolutely agree, I feel bored listening to his interviews because he says the same things over and over and uses lots of cliches. I noticed this before he became manager abd knew it would only be a matter of time before someone else mentions it. I don't think because some of us find it a tad annoying means were not behind him or don't like the guy. I think he is going to be great for saints. I just put him in an embarrassing dad/teacher category when it comes to interviews.... At least he has stopped speaking about himself in third person though!!! ;-)
Plumstead_Saint Posted 7 October, 2010 Share Posted 7 October, 2010 He wants us to pass the ball. We are a team. The players are playing for the team. He repeats his key phrases a lot, but what else is there to say when you are expected to talk for 5 minutes every week? Perhaps he reckons that if he repeats his mantras enough times, they will come true. Mind you I wish he was as pithy as WGS used to be.
