Waffle!!

Is it just me or does anyone else think our Nigel speaks a load of waffle?

Don't get me wrong as I think he is great for us and promotion is back on the cards this season. But he just seems to go on and on talking about winning a game of football!! Like we all thought it was going to be a game of ping pong or something.

I'm not suggesting he should do anything differently or it's a bad thing but I read the OS and struggle to get to the end of anything he says.

Anyone get what I mean?

I like what he says ,no mention whatsoever of Barney in his latest interview ....

I like what he generally says, I just find myself speed reading over it cause even after just 3 weeks I'm starting to think I have heard it all before.

I'm not trying to complain because he backs up what he says with the team visibly improving each week. I honestly think we will carry on improving and push back up to the promotion spots so it's more of a niggle than something that hacks me off.

The dark lord's posh voice used to do the same to me but he didn't do enough right to let it go as nothing more than a niggle. Lol

"They will be a difficult test"

"Its about winning a game of football"

"Never underestimate the opposition"

"Since (I/he) came in the building"

"The lads have worked hard this week"

"We have an honest group of players here (s******) who want to do well"

And repeat next week, and the next, and so on.

There is, if you watch it on saints player, says its a matter for the police but it seems he has taken internal action. Also mentioned he may look to bring in someone else on loan.

Completely disagree with the thread, he talks alot of sense, just seems very down to earth.

Most managers waffle to be fair - there is only so many ways you can say no that much in different ways.

That said, Adkins does have his fair share of verbal tics. "Simple as that" and "win a game of football" are already mentioned, but he also does that "at this football club" line a lot, which always seems to bug me.

Dave Jones and Tony Pulis do it as well, Jones especially. "at this football club" repeated about five times in every interview, just in case any of were under the impression that Dave Jones was managing a greengrocers.

Most managers say pretty much the same thing, they all use the standard cliche's, I think you learn them when you do the UEFA Coaching Badges. There's a course module called 'Giving Effective Pre and Post Match Interviews'.

Although I thought Steve Wigley took it to a higher level during his tenure, as every interview he gave was identical to the one before. But, if I remember rightly he hadn't done the UEFA Badges.

At least I'm not the only one. It's a silly thing to moan about but it's one of those things that bugs from time to time. There are not many that can interview like WGS though and as you say, most managers have the auto-repeat answers ready for the same old questions every week.

It's good to feel confident that we have a manager that will get us playing great footy and a few repeated lines in an interview won't make that any different.

when i was in canada I loved waffles with maple syrup and whipped butter.

on the nigel adkins front. he's quality, never says anything negative, always positive and uplifting. when eddie howe took over at bournemouth the changing rooms were plain white and bare. the first thing he did was put up players pictures and positive quotes on the walls. that same group of players were totally transformed, you may not like the waffle that comes out of his mouth but as long as he can find a way to make the players feel 10 feet tall i couldn't really care

Lol at the thread. Like Arsene Wenger never waffles on and on about much the same every week, didn't see le incident, was on the other side of the pitch, I felt the referee was less than perfect, I think the Stoke players were a leetle physical.

I'm sure he just has his secretary cut and paste from the previous encounter the previous season most the time.

Which is why I never listen to any interviews except post match. What are they ACTUALLY going to say about an upcoming match? Oh yes Tranmere, easy game should walk them, I'll play 4-3-2-1 with Lambert pushed onto their CB's and keep our two men wide and of course we will play it wide through defence from the back.

How else can you politely say "Oh yes xyz, easy game should walk them" making it sound as if "it will be a tough test" when you have to do it around 45 times a year

It's not that I don't like what he says. What he has to say in general is fantastic and very positive. I would have thought he is similar when talking to the players but without minding his manners for the camera's.

When there was talk about him coming here everyone was on about how he talks in third person perspective and talked about things he kept repeating. I suppose this is just a continuation of that.

We are only 3 weeks in but if he tells us we are here to win a game of football this time next year I will have a hissy fit. ;)

Don't worry, according to the great plan, next year he will be talking about how critical revenue diversification is for a club aspiring to the CL, and how he is proud to be opening the Monkey Chicken Petting Zoo, Tiger Woods rehabilitation home for wayward forwards, Saints On Air Radio Station.

Or how he believes it is important that the new kit (By Gucci) brings a critical importance to Sports Science by ensuring that the team focus on looking good when they walk on the pitch.

Yep its just you, big shock at a saints web poster who has nothing better to do than have a pop at someone who has come in steadied the ship and started to move the club in the right direction, think you're a knob

OK I might not of explained it well in the opening post but think I've explained what I mean more later on and at least 1 person gets what I mean. Thanks for taking the time to read some of the thread and I think you are amazing. X

He at least is consistent don't you think? He is a breath of fresh air if you ask me. Consistent, determined, and single minded.

I like his interviews. After we drew Colchester at home the reporter said

'i bet you worried in last minute when **** streaked through the middle'

Adkins replied

'I was worried when he came streaking through but luckily the lad had his clothes on'

Made me' chuckle

I know where you are coming from and you have cushioned your comments nicely in order not to offend (unlike some of the abusive replies!).

Whilst not giving a strong opinion either way, I will make one prediction :

a) As long as we are successful, most will think that he is articulate !

b) If we have a bad streak, he will be vilified as a bulllsh#tter !

At least Saintjay, you have an objective opinion rather than being wise after the event !

All IMHO of course.

Yeah I agree with that. I get the feeling that he means what he says and he has enough about him IMO to follow through. Just noticed those mannerism's with him more so than with some other people. The Wenger comparison earlier shows he is not the only one and he won't be the last.

Haha I never heard that. That's the difference between pre match and post match though. Someone else mentioned it's difficult to keep answering the same questions in different ways. I suppose I am only noticing the pre match interviews in my OP.

Thanks. My OP Wasnt intended to have a pop but the 2 points you broke it down too fit the situation perfectly. His comments are and will be well received as long as the team preform.

I don't think the other will be a problem as I think he will do the business so his pre match repeats will just be a pet hate I will have forever more I guess.

The skill of a good politican is to give a long reply to a question but never answer it. NA is a bit long-winded as Scunny fans said he would be (they obviously found it quite endearing) but if you listen carefully enough he does usually give a reply.

In fact, I've just listened to his pre-Saturday interview on Saintsplayer and thought it was pretty good-even reasonably concise at times. He handled the questions about Barnard pretty well even though they weren't particularly easy to answer (disciplined for a breach of club's code of conduct and it's now in the hands of the police). Also said another loanee may be on the cards and that we'd be strengthening in Jan and that he enjoys a great relationship with NC. All said fairly concisely I thought though the interview does run to 11 minutes!

Can't believe the grief being given to the OP about this. He merely brought this up as an observation of his interview techniques.

Fwiw I absolutely agree, I feel bored listening to his interviews because he says the same things over and over and uses lots of cliches. I noticed this before he became manager abd knew it would only be a matter of time before someone else mentions it.

I don't think because some of us find it a tad annoying means were not behind him or don't like the guy. I think he is going to be great for saints.

I just put him in an embarrassing dad/teacher category when it comes to interviews.... At least he has stopped speaking about himself in third person though!!! ;-)

He wants us to pass the ball.

We are a team.

The players are playing for the team.

He repeats his key phrases a lot, but what else is there to say when you are expected to talk for 5 minutes every week?

Perhaps he reckons that if he repeats his mantras enough times, they will come true.

Mind you I wish he was as pithy as WGS used to be.

'The football Club' is so - It's so important, that's why the 'football' club is emphasized. The football club is God - noooooooooww - it's not!

Listen, we have a hard working bunch of professional posters posting on here. We need everyone to stick together and be a team. Be a team together. We need to work hard and keep working for Southampton Football Club and this forum. This is a big forum for a big club and other posters are going to come here trying to make things difficult for us. But we're a big forum and if we post well, it will give us the opportunities to push on. Never underestimate those posters who want to ruin threads by hijacking them. If we all get behind the posters then we can all enjoy the opportunities that good posting can bring. Listen, when I came into this building there were a bunch of hard-posting professionals here and with the fresh start we're working hard to push-on towards, we can all enjoy winning more friends and climbing to the premier league of forums. ;)
