I dont understand how its billed as the under 21 side but has Wotton in the starting line up! I dont think all the others are 21 or under either?

Think as there is no worthwile reserve league available for us to join the Development/Under 21 side will end up playing all sorts of teams. Maybe we are taking a look at 1 or 2 of these Nike boys?

Just looked up Nike Academy on the web, hard to find out much about who plays for them, i notice their physio is ex-footballer Ian Andrews, presume he is the same keeper who played for us as reserve to Tim Flowers around 89-90 season. This game sounds no better than a training ground kick-about.

Didn't they say we would play presitge freindlies against other premier league reserve teams, and even European? Hopefully they will give us a bit more notice to book flights for Real Madrid Deveopment XI away.

The U21s are just the reserves, but playing in friendlies and not the reserve league. I can't really see the point in the name change as non-first team players who are older than 21 such as Bart, Wotton and Holmes still feature regularly in the U21s.

I bet it made Wotton smile. Footballs must have still had laces the last time he played in a U21 game.

Last time I checked, Ian Andrews was physio at Team Bath. Is it something to do with them?

What is the point of the under 21 team? It would be better to send players on loan to League 2 or the Conference.

I believe the theory is that if they play together at this level rather than being farmed out to different clubs then they will get a better understanding of how eachother plays and it therefore allows them to hit the ground running collectively when it's time to go up to 1st team level.

Fits it with Cortese's aim of 50% of the first team being home grown.

Pros and cons of both approaches I guess.

Details of the Nike Academy can be found here (took some finding Google came up with a aite that was crap, but eventually found this link on about the last page). Academy is for unsigned aspiring young players, supported by Nike and Premier League. They played several games last season and now a new intake is on board and hoping to impress. By the way they lost one game 8-1 last season so perhaps 7-1 isn't the walkover we think it is. Some of the players earned pro contracts last term. Profiles of the players involved can be found on the site, and it is all headed up by Huw Jennings. Wouldn't surprise me if Huw hasn't recommended us to look at one or two of the youngsters.
