Embarrassing chants

Enjoyed a fantastic day at Plymouth today to back up great days at Brentford and Brighton (and a not so great evening at Rochdale). However, at the considerable risk of getting a serious flaming, I have to say that the chants that our fans come out with are cringe worthy in the extreme.

"We are Southampton, we do what we want" ?!! What a pile of embarrassingly arrogant sh1te that it. The "we don't care about you" version is bad enough, but at least it had a bit of relevance at Bournemouth and Brighton.

"He's back from the dead...." FFS! At least Connolly showed enough displeasure at that chant today to hopefully seal its fate.

"Plymouth's going down with no money in the bank"....real classy that it is. Short memories or what?

...and the Cortese one about coming from Italy and hating Pompey......please

and to the younger element walking around the outside of the stadium chanting "going down" before the game - not good chaps, not good.

Anyway, rant over - back to my celebrations :)

I was told off for suggesting that some of our fans needed to be taught a lesson in humility :)

I agree with you, lets all have a disco is very chavvy too.

Agreed, our fans could have showed Plymouth a bit more decorum, they might not have a club to support come the start of next season. We were in a similar position not too long ago...

I also hate the "we do what we want" and "we don't care about you" chants, the first one caught on when Chaplow scored against Man Utd in the cup (their fans had sung it to us over and over, then we sang it back to them very vociferously when we went 1-0 up), and the second was brought in for the Bompey game and it's just stuck. No wonder people think we're arrogant - but I should imagine a lot of our fans were pretty p!ssed up today!

^^^^^^

this is what p1sses me off about some of the total c88ts that 'follow' our team!......pr1cks who have no sense of where to draw the line between banter and antagonism. If you can't handle ya beer, then don't f**king drink it.!! I am sick to death of reading how "arrogant and disrespectful saints fans are" and of how much everyone thinks we're "total scum"!!........well, I am NOT scum, and I am NOT arrogant, and the vast majority of Saints fans aren't either!...but the mindless (and i use that term in its full meaning!) minority have had us all tarred with their brush and i am f**king sick of it!...

show some f**king respect to others when you're in their city, grow the f**k up or simply f**k off !!!!!you are not wanted here anymore, not by me and not by the MAJORITY of Saints fans.... i love Southampton the club AND the city, and you are tarnishing that name...

I dont hate that, we are the Man Utd of this league, that may sound arrogant but it's true. The "we dont care about you" was apt, it was Bournemouth, they hate us, we dont care about them, it's totally correct. The chants i hate are the Cortese song, embarassing, which other clubs sings songs about its chairman? Red and White Barmy army, we are not a cricket crowd and the worst one of all is the David Connolly, he's back from the dead chant. Cringeworthy, even he hates it as he showed during the game today, hopefully that'll be the last we hear of that.

I've been critical of our fans in the past but the last couple of months apart from the odd embarassing moment or support home and away has been nothing short of excellent. Orient and today was some of the best away support i've experience in 25 odd years of following Saints, our away support is better now than ever. I remember us regularly only every taking 1,500 or so to Tottenham and less than 1,000 to MIdlands grounds, we get much more than that in league one. And i dont really see what the problem people have with clubs thinking we are arrogant, we are the biggest club in this division, over the second half of the season we've played the best football and been the best team , we have fantastic players that other clubs in this league can only dream off, the best stadium and the biggest fan base, we have a lot to be arrogant about. Arrogance is only a bad thing if it's unjustifed.

Bloody hell. What did we ever do to them. Chill Pills needed in Plymouth tonight.

Think they have a bad case of IanHollowayitis. There's always going to be banter between crowds at games and whilst I dont agree with taking the p!ss out of them going down it is evidently clear that they would be very quick to do the same if the shoe were on the other foot.

Jealousy is an ugly trait

Oh please....

That thread is embarrassing, let alone the chants. They are having a go at us because we, and I quote "went mental when they scored"....

no, they are having a go at us because some of our fans are c**ts..........and one of our fans decided to gob all over someone's car.....ya can't blame them for thinking we're ALL c**ts,can you.....

"I an Southampton! I sing what I want!" ;)

I wouldn't have given Plymouth fans any stick until they decided to stamp and kick a saints fan in their end on the floor repeatedly. ****s.

But according to them if you go in the home end you deserve that kind of treatment. You know, the kind of treatment usually reserved for rapists and paedophiles.

Although helps atmosphere of course the guys who do most of the singing are there for the occasion more than for the football hence can be embarrassing.

it was same with Milton Road lot - football snobbery i know but they weren't the cool kids and they sung stupid songs back then in the 80s

Now this is a good song:

Had a word at half time with the Inspector in charge at our end yesterday. He said that (as we all could see) that those who ran on the pitch when we scored were Saints fans in the 'home' end who were "running for their lives". Also said that they regularily get trouble at Plymouth, much more so than Exeter and Torquay. I lived in Devon for about 15 years and can testify that Plymouth is a grotty place. Must be the Naval port syndrome, but the attitude of certain sections of the population is poor.

I read that thread, banter is one thing but gobbing all over the guys car seems a bit over the top. I think the going down with no money in the bank chants were a bit tastless considering our history. As for songs not so bothered really (apart from singing about our chairman thats just wierd).

Agree with singing about Chairman is weird. BUT. Our existence is because in our hour of need he introduced our club to a kindly billionaire. He has made mistakes as chairman yes, but those who have met him agree he is a nice guy who genuinely wants success for this club. AND due to his background on banking will ensure we do it on a firm financial footing. In the 2 years of his chairmanship SFC has won the JPT and promotion. Not a bad first 2 years in football.

Absolutely spot on with all of them. Though even Connolly treated "back from the dead" as a bit of a laugh.

Not disagreeing with your assement of NC. Lots of clubs have chairman that have helped them to succsess but they don't sing about them during games it's just not the done thing, I suppose SFC could make it the in thing (but I doubt it).

Supafans moaning again. It's s laugh that's all.

It's a "laugh" that makes certain sections of our fanbase look like the spiteful, childish, bitter neanderthal idiots that they are.

I was happy enough with getting promoted* that I didn't feel the need to gloat at Plymouth about getting relegated, or being skint, I didn't want to sing utterly cringeworthy songs about our chairman, who I think has made a few dubious decisions, and I was amused at Connolly conducting the fans to sing what he wanted. And as for that pathetic rendition of "we do what we want", yeah, well done, now you look like 3rd rate Man Utd wannabes - ultra lower league and basically the empty song of an ignored kid that's desperate for any kind of attention - which pretty much sums up most of the mongs singing it.

I also didn't want to run on the pitch for no apparent reason other than "you're not supposed to", and I was absolutely delighted that the policing allowed those of us who just wanted to enjoy it and see the players' celebrations the time to do that, without a bunch of mongtards swarming the pitch and forcing the players down the tunnel. We were hanging around in the car park celebrating for ages afterwards too, the policing wouldn't have allowed for that if it had all kicked off.

Still, despite all that, and spending the last 25 minutes getting shoved up and down the seats thanks to some particularly thick-looking people desperate to stand in the aisles having all piled to the front (again for no particular reason other than not knowing how to behave), I had a bloody great time singing my guts out and generally celebrating the arse out of the day.

Some of the chants might not be that nice or that funny

BUT otherwise we are left with OWTSGMI which everyone else signs & the amount of threads on here about our lack of songs

We don't have "a lack of songs", we've got about 60 of them. I post this every time someone goes on about singing about Pompey "all the time" because I was recording the crowd noise for use in FIFA11 back in October - the Dirty Skate Bastards (only) feature in about 20% of our songs.

Right, lets get a few things straight about yesterday. Yes, we do sing some fairly embarrassing, rubbish, unoriginal songs, there is a fair bit of room for improvement there.

But there was very little bad behaviour from saints fans yesterday. A few bits of over-the-top, boisterous celebrating by a few, but nothing particularly harmful at all. There is no club in the world that upon sealing promotion, while being the best supported club in the league, not come across as a bit arrogant.

Now on the the Plymouth fans - it seems like a large percentage of them couldn't resist clambering over their fellow fans to put the boot in and spit on lone Saints fan who were celebrating in their end. Not saying for one minute it was right that Saints fans were in there and that they should be allowed to celebrate in front of Plymouth fans, but the Plymouth fans were the classic bullying cowards with loads of them jumping in on one bloke. Then after the game as we were coming out of the ground in the escort a young girl was hit on the head by a rock thrown by a Plymouth fan in the park to our right. With both of these incidents, what did the police do? They were more interested in filming Saints fans celebrating than doing anything about these Plymouth supporters, typical of modern day policing at games.

I won't be moaning about fans singing songs who have constantly travelled around this country and have finally got some reward. Our away support has been embarrassing in recent seasons but it really has improved, and I can see it only getting better next year. Well done one and all.

I didn't even think we were arrogant yesterday, except the "we do what we want" chant. The "going down" stuff just made us look like a bunch of idiots who didn't know the difference between celebrating our success and gloating at their failure... as others have said, "short memories".

And the ONLY reason there was "very little bad behaviour" was all the thugs who usually try their best to drag our name through the mud suddenly realised that they didn't want to start a fight with the 3 lines of police and dogs standing in front of them when it was "on the pitch" time, and instead managed to only aggravate all the celebrating fans around them with their selfish cramming up of the aisles and front areas (I'm particularly thinking of blocking the views of the wheelchair fans at the front). Can't fault the policing there, and nor am I sure how they're supposed to identify a random rock-chucker in a park.

If you think I'm going to condone Plymouth fans laying into people in the "wrong end" you're wrong, and I wouldn't be impressed with Saints fans doing the same if the roles were reversed, either.

So what you're saying is that "their reward" was seeing Plymouth relegated, as opposed to Saints promoted, right ? Because that's what they were choosing to sing about.

It's just sad.

Is there anybody like me who think all the people on here who post to say that fans should sing only certain songs have little understanding of the game and the passion that is very much part of it. Without the mix of people and bad language etc it becomes a very sterile spectacle, and would lose a lot of its appeal to fans who travel large distances to follow their team. Wembley in the JPT final was a carnival, a great day out. But for real passion give me a derby game against the our Hampshire rivals and that is what really makes the hairs on the back of your neck stand up. Singing from a selected "Hymn sheet" is not it I'm afraid. Spontaneity brings humour, good chants and bad and damn good days out like yesterday at Plymouth. Without the hard core at the Northam the other 3 corners of the ground sitting on their hands until we score, will not get you promoted or get people coming back for more.

Exactly, but there are a few precious people on here who think they are above everyone else because they conform to what *they* think is expected.
