alpine_saint Posted 9 May, 2011 Share Posted 9 May, 2011 Jeez, the season starts early. In past years I've usually come to the UK in the middle 2 weeks of August and caught the last friendly game or the first league game in the 2nd week.

In past years I've usually come to the UK in the middle 2 weeks of August and caught the last friendly game or the first league game in the 2nd week. Will be a long summer without club football as the season ends in April and doesn't start until the 3rd week in August, due to the Olympics. Hopefully it means the pre-season will be more focused than that cluster f**k from last year and the infamous "Saints have got no CBs against Crystal Palace thanks to Burley" season

stevegrant Posted 9 May, 2011 Share Posted 9 May, 2011 don't they usually get a bit leaked the day before though. No, the fixtures aren't actually generated until that morning. They have a test run about a week in advance, which is really just checking all the technical stuff is in place, e.g. emailing them to those who receive them via email, posting them via FTP to web servers, etc. The final list is usually sent about an hour or two before the release time, embargoed until that time. Spot on Granty. When I used to work at Meridian, I'd make up an excuse to go and visit the Newsroom and they would get them through about an hour before on the Newsfeed, embargoed until the release time. They would be on any of the rolling terminals and I'd sneak a peak and post a few up on the net (proper nawty stuff!!!).
saints_is_the_south Posted 9 May, 2011 Share Posted 9 May, 2011 Hopefully the skates away game will be late in the season, thus allowing plenty of time to rack up loads of away games as tickets will no doubt be sold by a ballot system.

I'd either want Pompey away to be fairly early in the season, so that this season's away attendance is used for the ballot, or to be quite late so we can get the win that sends them down

RedAndWhite91 Posted 9 May, 2011 Share Posted 9 May, 2011 Is it true that two fierce rivals (such as Saints and P*mpey) cannot play each other within the first or last two weeks of the season?
stevegrant Posted 9 May, 2011 Share Posted 9 May, 2011 Is it true that two fierce rivals (such as Saints and P*mpey) cannot play each other within the first or last two weeks of the season? There are various permutations when it comes to things like that, for example neither us or Pompey can play at home on the same day. I can't remember the last time there was a proper derby either early or late in the season, so that could be one of the guidelines used. I guess you could make a case for Ipswich v Norwich a few weeks ago, but there were 5 games left after that one.

Are the championship offering a play-off place to the third from bottom finisher next season then? (But it would be a mental situation if it ever did happen! The police would freak out!) AN Saint Posted 9 May, 2011 Share Posted 9 May, 2011 I am pretty sure that is not the case. It takes a considerable amount of time to generate the fixture list. There was an article on the bbc about it at the start of last season. The list has to be agreed by the police, teams, etc before it is confirmed. A program is used to generate an initial list this is then manually altered and checked against a number of criteria. They may have a test run of releasing the data but compiling the fixture list will start as soon as the play-offs are decided.

ericb Posted 9 May, 2011 Share Posted 9 May, 2011 Saints v Pompey at Wembley in the play off final in 12 months time Will be a great train journey up to Waterloo and back!!! **** knows what the police would do with that since it'd be almost impossible to police the entire route to wembley. Unless they introduced football specials for both the train & tube, and then had a cordon to the ground too...

shurlock Posted 9 May, 2011 Share Posted 9 May, 2011 Is it true that two fierce rivals (such as Saints and P*mpey) cannot play each other within the first or last two weeks of the season? The season we went down - we played them pretty close to the end of the season (three weeks before the end, I think). Its pretty likely that when we play them at theor place, it won't be at 3pm on a saturday. The OB will go for an early kickoff and/or play it on a Sunday. shurlock Posted 9 May, 2011 Share Posted 9 May, 2011 How about Boxing Day lunchtime KO, that would be good. Would be epic, though the OB would probably advise against it what with the trains not running. Much easier to give us an escort and coordinate things when fans use the train. Interesting to see the Skates are as high as joint 4th from bottom. They've got no players left and no money to buy any. I'd have put them down there with Barnsley and Donny myself. Um Bongo Posted 9 May, 2011 Share Posted 9 May, 2011 I think due to the last encounter and the morons who caused some trouble, the trip to Fratton and indeed their visit will be watered down as much as possible. Maybe even a bubble trip, not getting tickets until on official coaches, etc.
