1976_Child Posted 15 May, 2011 Share Posted 15 May, 2011 Can anyone remember anytime when any club (inc non-league) was owned by the manager, or in other words 'managed by the owner'. Just wondering is all. Any history buffs out there?

benjii Posted 15 May, 2011 Share Posted 15 May, 2011 Someone had an owner/player once. Well, I think someone let the owner on the pitch for the last few minutes of the last game.

the saint in winchester Posted 15 May, 2011 Share Posted 15 May, 2011 From reading the OP alone, my first thought was Barry Fry, and I see I'm not the first to name him. Owner, Chairman and Manager at the same time - at Peterborough?

Chez Posted 15 May, 2011 Share Posted 15 May, 2011 Someone had an owner/player once. Well, I think someone let the owner on the pitch for the last few minutes of the last game. it was John Ryan the Donny Rovers Chairman (became oldest footballer) who came on at the end of a game and he richly deserved it having saved them from extinction and just got them back into the football league. Brilliant man and one the Rovers fans will be for ever thankful to.

Fan The Flames Posted 16 May, 2011 Share Posted 16 May, 2011 Terry Smith a US motivational speaker did it at Chester. Ron Noads got a respectable 40% win ratio at Brentford.+*-
charlie saint Posted 16 May, 2011 Share Posted 16 May, 2011 Jimmy Hill's bound to come up soon... he's been a player, manager, chairman, linesman, commentator... probably all at the same time at least once. Coventry? Fulham? I'm sure Paul Scally (Gillingham) registered himself as a player.
The9 Posted 16 May, 2011 Share Posted 16 May, 2011 Spencer Trethewy was the Aldershot kid, I don't remember him being the manager at any point though. Has since changed his name to Spencer Day, been in prison, and is running Chertsey Town. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spencer_Trethewy The bit about him mortgaging his house for the benefit of Aldershot seems rather strange, given that he was a 19-year-old property developer and even in the late 80s surely couldn't have accumulated that kind of security that quickly ? Prince Jazzbo Posted 16 May, 2011 Share Posted 16 May, 2011 Spencer Trewethey or something? He eventually did a stretch for running up a massive bill at the savoy or somehere whilst claiming to be Whitney Houston's Manager.
