Saint Mikey Posted 27 June, 2011 Share Posted 27 June, 2011 (edited) Following on from the 'flop' thread, it got me thinking about Branfoot's transfer business. Trying to get together a list of all his Ins and Outs - Yes, I'm bored and having a trip down memory lane! Does anyone remember anymore? Also, correct me on any I've put. It seems so long ago now, my memory tends to blend some Nicholl/Branfoot/Ball transfers! Ins Dave Beasant Dowie Speedie Dixon Paul Moody Stuart Gray Terry Hurlock Steve Wood David Lee Ken Monkou Paul Allen Peter Reid Perry Groves Simon Charlton Outs Case! Shearer Flowers Ruddock Horne I found this link, during some investigation. Will bring back memories for some. Supersubpuckett Posted 27 June, 2011 Share Posted 27 June, 2011 Branfoot was such a disaster, typified everything about our early/mid 90's struggle. The thing that exemplifies his incompetence was the time we went on a fairly healthy run which took us into the top 10, only for him to replace some players with returning from injury senior players (Hurlock!!), I don't think we won another game and finished just above relegation. Please correct this oversight. I'm not defending him, as he was terrible at the time. We lost the attacking flair we had under Nicholl, played awful football and lost some very good players. However, we were lucky enough to survive and recover. We have sunk far lower in the last 5 years than Branfoot ever took us...unfortunately, he's been completely overshadowed by two relegations. once_bitterne Posted 27 June, 2011 Share Posted 27 June, 2011 As much as the consensus of opinion is to view him as the antichrist, when you look at the mess the club was in mid-late 90s it is a testament to the good job that Lowe actually did here. I challenge any sane fan to look at the list of players from this period and argue that, if it hadn't been for MLT, we would have been relegation certainties. Lowe's term of office here co-incided with the decline of MLT's career and yet, instead of getting relegated due to this, we actually got better and finished in the top half under Hoddle and WGS. I really don't get why people (apart from Dalek) think that if Hoddle had been re-appointed we'd have magically kicked off with the form we showed under him previously. Would we have stayed up? I personally don't know but it's far from a guarantee considering the results he achieved with other clubs then and ever since has been pretty poor. Besides it's as arguable if not more that we'd have stayed up if Sturrock had stayed up til the end of the season, as for all his faults his record (if short) with us was W5 D2 L6 - pretty much mid table ie. not bad. The Sturrock appointment was an odd one, and like delldays as mentioned it is very arguable that this is where Lowe lost the plot. It appeared that he appointed him and then took an instant dislike to him. There seemed to be a clash in social class between the two and I remember a story going round at the time when Lowe & Sturrock had to attend some meeting or meet a new player or something, and Lowe turned up in his best suit and Sturrock turned up in an egg-stained t-shirt and muddy tracksuit. Then appointing Wigley was the beginning of the end of our time in the PL and the chaos ensued Edited 27 June, 2011 by JackFrost

Why on earth did Ruppey not sack PS at the end of the season before. It was clear to most that he didn't rate him, to give him all preseason and then sack him early in the following season was madness. He did the same with Redknapp, should have got rid when we were relagated but fannyed around until he walked out. That wasted a whole season with the parachute money. Compared to Jan and Wotte, Branfoot was a genius.

In contrast i give you David Lee. One of the worst and scruffiest players to ever wear the stripes. What was going on with that hair cut? Bald bast*rd on top, Micheal Bolton at the back. Lasted about 20 games then loaned out somewhere equally as poor as where he came from.

I hated, literally hated going to The Dell that last half season he was in charge, it was rubbish, plain and simple. What a nightmare combination Branfoot as manager and Lowe as Chairman would have made. Thank Christ we were spared that. And for anyone who thinks things wouldnt have been different if Hoddle had come back when Lowe for the only time I can remember bottled it, well they must be mad. There is no way we would have been relegated with Hoddle in charge.

You know it's bad when it comes to that, yet every crap performance and result he still stayed somehow. The lowest point for me was losing 0-1 at home in front of about 9,000 fans and the sit in afterwards. No way would any clubs board ignore fan protests these for as long as they did then. John Cool Posted 27 June, 2011 Share Posted 27 June, 2011 To the tune of "Oops Upside Your Head" We want B******t out I said we want B******t out! was a regular Dell chant. As manager of Reading he managed to win 13 games on the spin. He also was sort of responsible for MLT's two wonder goals against Newcastle as they were (perhaps) a response to him being dropped. Nevertheless, most unpopular Saints manager in the 25 years I've been supporter.

Whoever was in the managerial hotseat had a no win position. Lowe and Wilde etc infighting with neither having a pot to **** in to support the club and relying on dwindling share price equity that they just about controlled was the downfall. revolution saint Posted 29 June, 2011 Share Posted 29 June, 2011 Branfoot was by far the worst "football" manager I've seen since watching Saints. The style of play was utterly dreadful and the players brought in were largely awful. Anyone remember that tactic of kicking the ball as far into the corner as possible every time we kicked off? When asked we consistently did this (and it never worked) Branfoot replied, "I don't know why the players do that - I've never asked them to". You can argue that Branfoot managed to keep us up but the team he inherited hadn't finished lower than 12th in six seasons so we shouldn't be using mere survival as a benchmark. I was also one of those who had got to the stage of hoping we would lose just to get rid of the manager. For any supporter to get to that stage it shows just how dire Branfoot must have been. Think Paul Macdonald played as sub in Sideways Jim Magiltons inspired win at home to Pompey when Merrington was in charge. hink he went to play for Brighton after? Also Colin Crambe? scots lad signed on cheap, went on to play lower and non league football in england and scotland. Saw him make a sub appearance away to Everton when losing away as usual at the time. Never had the skills to threaten Paul Moody so was released. Most depressing thing about away days then was that as soon as the opposition scored you know Saints would lose they were that poor.

sotonian Posted 29 June, 2011 Share Posted 29 June, 2011 Branfoot was a man i really hated, several years later i was at Jason Dodds testimonial as a guest, found myself sat next to branfoot, it was so odd, he was actually a really decent friendly bloke. he chatted all the way through the game, i even shared a drink with him after the game, he had some interesting stories and a genuinely funny bloke, still saints worst manager ever though!
