Oscar Gobern has gone

Just posted on the Hudds forum to give my two cents. I was greeted, somewhat to my surprise, with some hostility.

Not really bothered about that, just had to laugh at the fact that they seemed to think it was a loss for us. They loved it as they saw that Adkins was annoyed, without actually reading the article to find out why. Just had to laugh at it.

FFS, can't blame him for leaving. Not played in 2 years - not all of which was down to injury. Currently the 4th choice CM and with the arrival of Cork or someone else (which was happening regardless of OG's plans), the 5th. Fair play he wanted to kickstart his career. Going out on a loan can be quite disruptive for someones's development if they can't see a path into the first team. Better to bite the bullet and get established elsewhere.

Maybe he was offered more money at Hudders . I think he has made a mistake career wise.

Well logically they must have offered him at least the same money as Saints - we have to give an out of contract U-24 player a new contract offer that's equal to his last contract in order to get any compensation if he leaves (and we clearly made an offer, as the OS story had his status up in the air awaiting to see if he accepted).

If we offered him the same money AND we were going to be in a higher division I'd be surprised if he was taking a pay cut to go elsewhere now when he could just as easily have signed a new Saints deal and then dropped down a League at the end of that.

He's taken a gamble on being more appreciated somewhere else at a lower level and Huddersfield making the step up soon.

Personally I don't think we'll miss him much, he never seemed to develop much, but Adkins clearly saw more than I did - and I wonder if the appearances ahead of the likes of Stephens at the end of the season were a bid to keep him ?

Am i the only one who thinks that we're now talking him up to try and get more money at tribunal.

Disagree - IMO NA was properly disappointed. You just have to count the number of times NA referred to OG in interviews to appreciate that the club supported and saw something in him (wasn't it somebody on here who spotted NA having coffee with OG in town, leading them to liken the two to a headteacher and pupil); and these were not sweet-nothing words: Wotton was released to open up a berth for OG when many others would have played it safe and kept him as CM back-up.

Fairly clear from the Press Conf that NA was well angry with Gobern's advisors and saw him as an integral part of his plans after all the effort they had put in to get him back fit and ready - the things that were reported from the PC would be a watered down version of NA'a real thoughts. It would seem now that we will have to find a replacement for him AND get new midfielder in, as 5 seems to be the magic number for CMs, to cover suspensions and injuries. It seems that OG didn't even have the decency to let Saints know, perhaps if he had NA may have taken up an option on Stephens. I hope OG does well, but perhaps he needs to look for some better advisors.

Well, that'll certainly help the club's case... or do Huddersfield's research for them, anyway.

I am amused by the comment which mentions that when the midfield got injured there were lots of calls to sign a replacement rather than for Gobern to play.

He's got a point, if Adkins didn't trust him in L1 then why would he get a game in the championship, especially when we are in for Cork. Plus i dont remember too many on here championing Goberns cause for a regular starting slot, i thought most of you would be glad he's gone.

I would agree with that, very disappointed. This is going to have no impact on the tribunal, they will be looking at the deals offered by both clubs and come up with a figure representative of those deals in that market. It is very difficult to bring the likes of Gobern through from the Academy, a lot of time and effort has to go into this and sacrificing the first team to a small extent. You only have to look at the time it took Matt Mills to develop to get the picture. We are committed to bringing Academy players through to the first team, with players like Oxo it's a no brainer, but with players like Gobern it's a lot of hard work and sacrifice.

I read Nick Ilingsworths peice in the UI and that may well have some merit over the lads thinking. But he completely over looked the fact that promotion was the be all and end all for that stage of the season, with Adkins totally justified becuse of what he managed to achieve. I would be very sure that Adkins had fully explained his plans for the lad and he knew the manager was on his side, even after the kung fu rumble at cherry central. It would not surprise me if this came down to something as simple as a £50k signing fee or the like.

First thing I've agreed with you on in about 6 months.

If we wanted him we would have offered more. I expect you have to make an offer of some sort to make it go to a tribunal.

He is athletic but that's about it, a bit of a nothing player.

We did make an offer, at the same time as we made DC an offer, that is documented. Clear from NA that we made an offer but OG (or rather his agent) didn't even consider going back to discuss/negotiate, just went elsewhere. Anyone who thinks we weren't keen to keep him has either not read or understood the reaction of NA in the Press Conderence. For NA to talk the way he did in public shows how angry he really was that despite everything the club had done OG still walked away without even having the decency to let Saints know what was happening until it was too late. Afraid another sign of the rather nasty side of modern football, bit like Puncheon in my opinion.

I think Adkins is a tad upset that it makes him look like he's not as good at developing young players as his reputation suggests. Whether that's true or not remains to be seen. We also have no idea whether Gobern tried to negotiate or not, only that we can assume he took the better offer in the end.

he has gone..not great loss at all....he would hardly get a game in league 1..what chance would he have in the NPC when we are actively chasing players like jack cork

he probably wont even be a regular for hudds.....

As it happens I agree on this. But it is completely irrelevant to what I posted.

Bloody crocodile tears from Adders if you ask me, when he had him he obviously didn't rate him highly enough to start him

Just because a player doesn't start, it doesn't mean a manager doesn't rate him. Gobern had Hammond, Chaplow and Schneiderlin ahead of him in the pecking order, and rightly so. Four doesn't go into two, so if all available someone had to miss out each game.
