ant Posted 2 April, 2013 Share Posted 2 April, 2013 Excellent analysis. Not just because it's positive - Neville's insight and reading of proceedings is second to none. He's wasted on England, I'd rather see him coaching in club football.
Saint Garrett Posted 2 April, 2013 Share Posted 2 April, 2013 Yer really good pundit. Appreciates playing football and always gives credit where its due. Didn't play the easy card by just saying Chelsea rested players, he said there was still enough quality to win the game. He can really see what we're trying to achieve and how good/calm our young players are.

Saint Martini Posted 2 April, 2013 Share Posted 2 April, 2013 Great watch, good to finally see a bit of his analysis (can't get it here in Sweden). So much better then the generalizations the MOTD pundits throw out there week after week.

Yes, Hansen and Shearer, while generous in their praise of Saints, lack the vocabulary to convey, or indeed the intelligence to make, the incision and analysis of Neville. Saint Martini Posted 2 April, 2013 Share Posted 2 April, 2013 Yes, Hansen and Shearer, while generous in their praise of Saints, lack the vocabulary to convey, or indeed the intelligence to make, the incision and analysis of Neville. Not only that, they're comments are always directly related to the result and not the quality of play. If you win you're good, if you lose you're poor. This will be correct most of the time but not always. Co Adriaanse (former Ajax, Porto, AZ & Twente manager) once had a falling out with a reporter because he criticized the performance when Adriaanse claimed it was only the result that was dissapointing. He then came up with a term that directly translated would be "result-journalism". This is what I like why I read comments from Neville, he analyzes the performance and not (only) the result. Thanks to the OP, I don't have sky so would never see this.
Ric Posted 2 April, 2013 Share Posted 2 April, 2013 I've been very impressed with Neville's analysis - he's completely fair (even when talking about Man U) and is able to put across a technical insight far in excess of that by Hansen and particularly Lawrenson. Match of the Day should be watching this and planning on upping their game considerably - they've been resting on their Lawro's for far too long. (Sorry - couldn't resist )
Barry the Badger Posted 2 April, 2013 Share Posted 2 April, 2013 One thing that I think helps Neville (though I agree he is excellent) is the screen thing he can control himself, he can move and stop the footage exactly where he wants to make his point. Match of the day all they get is a selection of clips which they have to talk over, I think Sky deserve some credit for the format of their punditry. But the BBC should really have something very similar. Even if Neville was on MOTD, what he has to say would be much more interesting that those bellends Hansen and Lawro. Everything about Sky coverage is better. If it was up to me all football should be on Sky, but then thats because we have it!

Tokyo-Saint Posted 3 April, 2013 Share Posted 3 April, 2013 NMF is the best football program on TV, I really miss it the weeks it is not on. Followed by Goals on Sunday which smashes MOTD for reviewing Saturdays matches.
benjii Posted 3 April, 2013 Share Posted 3 April, 2013 MoTD (and indeed all BBC and ITV analysis) tends to consist of nothing more than drawing a halo around a player or counting the number of defenders in the frame. "1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 defenders there and no one has tackled him". Brilliant. Thanks Alan. Well worth a shedload of any licence fee payer's money. It is a bit depressing sometimes. Bucks Saint Posted 3 April, 2013 Share Posted 3 April, 2013 Sky have a lot more time to fill / analyse dont forget. MoTD is a different format program trying to pack in all the games, post match interviews and analysis to keep a mixed-bag audience happy. I agree that Neville would be better on MoTD than Hansen and Shearer but even he would only get 60 or 90 seconds per match

I agree that Neville would be better on MoTD than Hansen and Shearer but even he would only get 60 or 90 seconds per match This. The main (not only) problem with MOTD is that it tries to spread itself too thinly. Is it a review of the days PL games, or an analysis programme? They should make it the former only, give each match longer without the "insight" between.
saintbob40 Posted 3 April, 2013 Share Posted 3 April, 2013 I wonder if losing Cork & Spider to injury etc would upset this great formation? Losing either of them would make life difficult as I do not see Davis or JWP as naturally fitting into the 2 in the 4-2-3-1 formation as they are more suited to the 3. Cork has been the glue that has held everything together and is IMHO, despite the eye catching nature of some of Spider's performances, the more important to the team. My player of the season but not the type of player that wins such accolades.

pap Posted 9 April, 2013 Share Posted 9 April, 2013 We need our own TV station, I would love to watch re-runs of classics to fill the time during interviews etc. Was thinking about Saints independent media coverage the other day. Right now, I think we have one podcast out there, which goes out every two weeks. It's a good enough pod, but don't think the chaps that run it have the bandwidth to go weekly. As someone who is in love with the sound of his own voice, I'd naturally love to have a pop. Do you have to know anything about football on these football podcasts?
