Property around Southampton/Eastleigh Area

The time has come, I am looking to move back to Hampshire.

I have a budget (circa £180k) and ideally am looking to be around Winchester. I am open to other options though depending on the area and available properties.

So, other then Winchester, Fair Oak, Otterbourne, Colden Common (which I am familar with) I am open to suggestions. Ideally i'm looking to get a 2 bedroom property, not a flat. Is there anywhere nice in Southampton itself I could consider? Maybe Totton way? Thanks for any help/ideas here guys.

Good area but very busy road and you get the Ambulances sirens 24/7

Amazing how good proper acoustic glass double glazing is though. Spend £5,000 on doing the front and you'd transform living in that house.

Plenty of genuinely nice houses available for that money itself in Southampton. Depends how far you take the term "nice"? Can get a proper 3 bed terrace in Shirley for £170k.

Having had a quick look through you can get some decent places for the £175k mark. I used to live right near here and these houses are spot on for the money. Decent size and well built and the area is fine. Right near riverside park, not far from Bitterne and the M27, just really a decent location.

Oh and by the way get a proffesional removal company in, when we moved from Southampton to Harrogate we were going to do it ourselves but by the time you've hired a van, filled it with diesel its not much more to get the pros in. Bishops Waltham removals did us, £1200 and worth every penny when you think it was about £600 to hire a 7.5t lorry then looking at £200 or so in diesel. They Arrived at 10am Friday morning, cleared the house in two hours and delivered the stuff to our place in Harrogate at 8am the next morning, put everything in the right rooms and were gone by 10am. Really good lads and top draw service.

Ha, that Winchester Rd house is basically opposite where I lived from 2007-2010, ridiculous traffic most of the time and you do get used to the sirens. Still walking distance from town but buses are surprisingly rare down Hill Lane.

£180k seems cheap, sold mine for £250k though probably had a bigger garden and was detached.

I'm in Hedge End now, would recommend somewhere near the station here if you want links to Winchester.

You can get 2 or 3 bed houses in Hamble & Netley for that price. Both have train stations and good bus services to Southampton. Netley is much better for traffic as you can avoid Hamble Lane. Takes under 15 minutes drive from there to get to Ocean Village.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. It's good to see there really are some good places around Southampton that I can consider, my price range should see me right.

In response to earlier points, yes, property around Winchester is in 95% of circumstances above my budget.... but it can be done. The problem is the places will need some work most of the time or be snapped up within a few minutes.

Fair Oak is probably my first fall-back option. Looking at the property Turkish posted there, shouting distance of St Mary's and a fair size it would be good. Having been just a short walking distance from the centre of Cov for so long I am hoping for something a little rural. Although, compared to here anything that isn't on fire would be an upgrade!

You can hire a 7.5ton lorry for two days for about £200.

We're currently awaiting completion on the purchase of a 2 bedroom property in Hedge End as first time buyers. Dealt at £157k which is a few grand lower than others in proximity have been going for but still achievable. Happy with everything we've seen and heard about the area and not too much bother to get into Southampton.

Apart from a brief spell in Southsea while my girlfriend finished her degree over there, I've lived in central Southampton since I was a student and have just about had my fill now. Wanted to remain close in order to reap the benefits but it surprised me how little resistance I mustered when the lady suggested moving to the 'burbs.

I work in Fair Oak and it's dead as can be, albeit pleasant enough. House prices seem inflated there however, same with the likes of Bishopstoke. Obviously there are still plenty of nice places in Southampton so it doesn't have to be outskirts. We preferred to pick areas and hunt from there - otherwise it became tempting to compromise in order to get something bigger that was in a less than ideal location. With a budget of 180k I'd say you'll be fine as it seems to be above the tipping point for a well-located house in decent nick.

Wait, missed that. I could afford Hamble!?!

Easily. You get more for your money in Netley though, and there's less stuck up yachtie tw4ts.

It looks like we'll have gravel pits in Hamble soon. Add the trucks coming up and down Hamble Lane to the tankers gong to BP and the cars going to Follands & Coopervision and it could be be a nightmare. It is a decent place to live though. Loads of nice walks, 2 rivers, the Royal Victoria Country Park and 5 pubs. We've been here 12 years now though so looking to move.

Maybe there's a deal to be had. ;)

I do like the area there, love the idea of living out by the Solent, it may be a little out of the way for what i'm after though.

Ha, yeah you could afford our house with your budget.

All depends where you are working and how you'll get there. It never feels like we are that far out, although it would if you needed to drive up to and on the M27 everyday.

Fair Oak is Blackpool compared to Hedge End, I challenge anyone on here seriously to find a place of approx 25,000 in the UK that has 1 pub in the centre and the other one 1.5 down the road to the East that used to be in the middle of nowhere, Hedge End has fewer pubs than Curdridge.
