Yate Saint Posted 13 January, 2009 Share Posted 13 January, 2009 Hope so, but we got Stern John as part of the deal. Hopefully that did not have an effect on sell on clause. Hope its a 50% clause considering he refused to play for us!!
Saints67 Posted 13 January, 2009 Share Posted 13 January, 2009 If we didn't I'm sure the Columbus Crew (I think) team he played for before us will. Like an earlier poster stated probably the Stern John deal will negate any sell on fee.

Like an earlier poster stated probably the Stern John deal will negate any sell on fee. It was Stern John who played for the columbus crew before he joined Nottingham Forest way back when. Kenwyne played for a tiny club in trinidad and I believe we paid them a % of the transfer fee when he left so that should be them out of the loop. I doubt we have a sell on clause as we got what looked at the time to be top dollar for him, 20-20 hindsight probably says we were conned! The Stern John transfer is not conected in anyway both clubs stressed this at the time.
Chez Posted 13 January, 2009 Share Posted 13 January, 2009 the £6m fee was too low and I said so at the time. Even with that terrible side last season we would have done well with Jones leading the line. Losing him was a killer blow that we have never recovered from. John couldn;t lace the lads boots in terms of effectiveness. There is no mention of a sell on fee on the OS, but that doesn't mean there isn't one. Its a Lowe ploy to reveal such things to appease disgruntled fans, and I'm not sure the board at the time had the fans baying for blood.

Chez Posted 13 January, 2009 Share Posted 13 January, 2009 (edited) Oh come on, he scored single figures for Sunderland whilst featuring in virtually every game. That's hardly worthy of the "lace his boots" God-like status. note I said `in terms effectiveness' For what its worth Sunderland hardly lay 100's of chances on a plate though do they? BTW he's got 7 already this season and he has been linked with several of the big boys including Chelsea, Spurs and Villa. Stern hardly set the world on fire at the top level. I recall both Brum and Sunderland getting rid as soon as they had goen up. I know we lost several players that summer but losing Jones hurt us massively in both attack and defence (both areas where we subsequently struggled showing what an important player he was for us). IMO he does so much more than just score goals, he leads the line, wins headers all over the park, he works hard across the line and he is also extremely good defensively at set peices. I'd take Jones back over Bale or Walcott (obviously only if he was committed to us - which sadly he wasn't). Stern...well, I thought he was lazy and an inadequate replacement for Jones. I'm not sure if it was just anger at the way Jones went on strike, but there were fans on here laughing at the fee and saying he was average. Average first touch perhaps but if you want a big number 9 then he's your man. Edited 13 January, 2009 by Chez
James_O_Mac Posted 13 January, 2009 Share Posted 13 January, 2009 Why is it that our most prolific goal scorers of the last 2 seasons are both deemed 'lazy' by many... Rasiak/John. I would take Jones and John up front - one to do all the work and one to finish. But beggars can't be choosers. Stern kept us up, i'm bloody happy he did. Premiership goals are not easy to come by in relegation battling sides, especially not when it's your premiership debut season (04-05 for us cannot be counted IMO). Saint Garrett Posted 13 January, 2009 Share Posted 13 January, 2009 He is a cracking player with a lot of potential, and exactly the kind of player that we need. Defence and attack he is a huge asset, and thats coming from someone who slated him for being lazy and having the touch of a rapist for the majority of the time that he was with us...apart from the last season. Window Cleaner Posted 13 January, 2009 Share Posted 13 January, 2009 Too low for potential maybe, but what CCC side can reject 6m for a player?! Have to be vaguely realistic. Just happens that 6m plus Stern John was a good deal for them as well as us. We only got 4.8 million though.
Whitey Grandad Posted 13 January, 2009 Share Posted 13 January, 2009 It suited both clubs at the time. You can't hang on to a player when the 'big' clubs come knocking. It's something that we are just going to have to get used to, I'm afraid. We've done our fair share of poaching players from 'lower' clubs in our time. Nelly the saint Posted 13 January, 2009 Share Posted 13 January, 2009 Along the same lines, i've read in a couple of places that Spurs want to move Bale on. Do we have a sell on clause? Also didn't the deal involve some future payments based on games ans Spurs getting in the Champions League?

CHAPEL END CHARLIE Posted 13 January, 2009 Share Posted 13 January, 2009 Sunderland would be clinically insane to sell him for anything less than £10m or £12m and even then relegation is a lot more costly than that so I'd keep him if I were them . Ultimately he will probably play for a bigger club a some stage IMO as his ability demands it . Although Kenwyne's goal tally is maybe a tad disappointing remember he suffered a serious injury on International Duty last summer and has only recently fully recovered . Quick , strong and so good in the air I'm surprised the RAF hasn't put in a bid he's really got the lot . Often compared to Drogba I think a young Emile Heskey might be a better comparison , in a perfect world I wish we could have kept him longer . I haven't read that we got an early settlement on the Jones deal (just that we had got £4.8m so far), just Bale and Walcott, not that it matters as any future payment would probably already have been factored into our current spending.
