A family heritage of rich land owners who had multiple slaves and were then handed the equivalent of £20m in the 18th century when slavery was abolished. I don't believe in paying anything to anybody in regards to slavery. It is history. It was of its time. That's what the world was like back then. Instead of everlasting digging up the past and finding fault, let's look to the present and learn from past mistakes because there are more than enough problems these days to occupy us.

I'm not so sure. If people can feel proud of their ancestors, it follows that they can feel embarrassed or upset about their behaviour. Sure, it shouldn't impact their lives, but it's strange to say that people can't feel upset about it.

Totally agree. But part of that learning process must be accepting what was wrong as well.

I'm not talking generally. The point was regarding a persons direct family. If my old man's dad was an axe murdering madman, I wouldn't feel too proud about him. That his generation flattened Dresden doesn't make me want to hang my head in shame though.

Of course someone can feel upset about it. I just think it's a waste of time and effort when you're not responsible in any way and literally nothing you can do about it. If I found out something like that about a distant ancestor I'd be interested but I'd also recognise how far removed they are from me.

I think this Alex Scott thing is an old story but in her case it was her great great great great grandfather from the early 1800s. It's slightly more understandable if it's your grandad, not least because there's a fair chance you will have met and interacted with them.

Slavery is one the oldest industries in the world, practiced all over the world, where on earth would you start with reparations?
