Why does it need to be proportionate? What exactly is the problem with companies choosing a diverse range of people to advertise their products?

Appealing to the widest possible range of potential customers.

Of course you then have to ask whether people of a particular ethnicity / skin tone / sexuality would actually be put off buying a product or service because the advert for it didn't include somebody they can immediately identify with.

When you watch pretty much any drama on TV now you can tick them off. Always a black one, Asian one, gay one, mixed race couple and disabled one.

Not seeing many TV characters in a Burka

So do you think advertisers are putting diversity ahead of money?

Personally I think it is incredibly naive to think that they are doing anything other than trying to sell as much product as possible, and personally, I think they do a shit ton of work figuring out what works and what doesn't.

They'll know their target markets and what appeals to them.

There are also a lot of misleading stats on this.  I did a research study on this a couple of years ago, and the proportion of BAME actors in adverts was roughly equivalent to the proportion of BAME people in urban populations.  People complaining seem to see the one black woman in an ad and not the 5 white people who are also in it.

Sarah Pochin still going and having a pop at Anas Sarwar now https://www.thenational.scot/news/25572754.racist-reform-uk-mp-attacks-anas-sarwar-white-speech/

What’s the difference, he was moaning about white people being over represented  in certain roles , she was complaining about ethnics being over represented in certain roles.

When Scotland is 92% white, it’s not really surprising, but that’s not the point. The only difference is hes one of the “good guys” and she’s from Reform. They’re either both racist or neither of them are.

Exactly this. I’ve worked in and around advertising for knocking in 30 years and selling is all advertisers care about. Things have changed massively since I started out, back in the 90’s I used to get from some clients “that’s great but lose the black/Asian guy”, nowadays it’s the complete opposite, it’s more “that’s great but we need more diversity”.

It’s all about context, people are making more of an effort for representation now because it was so racist in the past, that is undoubtedly a good thing.

It’s how it’s said, I don’t necessarily agree with Streeting’s original observation but there’s a gulf of difference between saying ‘it’d be good to see more representation’ and ‘I’m sick to death of seeing brown and black faces, there’s no white families’.

It’s not that Streeting’s a good guy, I could pick many holes in that statement, but simply a lot more articulate than Pochin which is a core competence at this level. She’s not 30P Lee from the mines though, she’s studied at a good university and been a JP. She knew what she was saying and has plenty of prior for being a racist.

Mind you, she got reprimanded for dragging politics into that as well (having family members who are JPs, that is no no) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sarah_Pochin

Approximately one in six heterosexual women in Thailand have been subjected to domestic violence.  One in six!

The figures are also believed to be widely under reported.

Why would I want to travel to such a backward, abusive country?

Listening to the nutty old lying MSM again hey. Thailand has a superb outlook on such thing. U get in trouble for domestic violence, the neighbours will give you a good kicking FACT. The police turn a blind eye to the kickings. Thailand is far more advance in almost every way now than the UK that has been ruined by you left leaning bleeding heart libtards.

Ah, the epitome of an advanced society - neighbours giving wife beaters a good kicking and the police ignoring it. Heart warming stuff.

It'd be a tad better if there wasn't so much wife beating to begin with.

Presumably in the same way they turn a blind eye to the wife beatings, hence the problem with under reporting.

Backward country.

There are clearly some intelligent people who are considering Reform.

But if people find themselves on the same side as the thickest of the thick, the racists and the conspiracy theorists, does an alarm bell not go that makes them wonder if Farage has conned them?

Many, for a second time.

I knew a fella who flew over every year to spend time with a woman who he described as his "kind of wife". While there he spent as much time as he could committing "kind of adultery" with anyone who'd take his cash.

And I've never met anyone with a shipped in Thai bride who isn't weird. I'm sure there are exceptions, but I haven't met them yet.

Doesn't that highlight the glaring need for a viable alternative?

It depends what people are looking for though. If the viable alternative is predominantly based on an aggressive approach to immigration, what credible party is going to make that their focus? Reform seem to be pandering to a crowd and leaving them to amplify their message.

It does - viable being the key word.

Back in 2016 I wanted the UK to get a better deal from the EU, but I never considered punching myself in the face as an option, many chose that self-harm route and it resulted as predicted in self harm, division and the UK becoming a laughing stock around the world.

Now we have the options of two parties who have performed badly, some centralist parties without experience or a party made up of racists, chancers and conmen who have no viable policies and are clearly unfit to run a bath let alone anything important.

Just because we are short of choices doesn't mean people have to punch themselves in the face again, even the thick ones must realise it will hurt.
