I'd be surprised if we offered him a contract again.

No doubt we were very surprised he went the didn't meet the option to renew route on a technicality due to our appeal.

If hes that mercenary we can be just as ruthless.

I know this is stating the obvious but unless he has a blinding WC to my mind it's difficult to see who will take a chance on him given his track record of injuries.

Easily solved by being better than wanting players to get injured? 

You can add, especially players who have done their best for us, whether or not that's worked out.

I know you're not the first to mention it, kitch, so not singling that post out in particular. But I thought that would be something we should all be well above.

Very much doubt he has walked out on us for a two year contract in League One.

This is a strange one for me. He was offered a new deal I think that has been made clear by the club that we wanted him to stay, so for me it will either be a premier league team or a Scottish Premiership side he would be looking to go to. Surely he would not turn us down if there was not anything in the pipeline? Maybe just maybe there could still be a u turn, but we need to plan on buying a new striker.

I just wish Stewart all the best. I think he's too risky for us and I think it's the right move. As others have said, I think he'll end up at Hearts. Shankland was earning more than Stewart so they can afford him

This. We offered and we can only presume he has rejected it and we have said goodbye as we released him. I cannot see us trying again, because we need players who want to play for us.

Good luck to him. We knew it was a risk when we signed him, if he had been fit in that first season he’d have been a hell of a player for us. Ultimately though, he has been here three years and even now he looks gassed after 60 minutes and can’t start two games in a week. I doubt that’s going to change after he turns 30 in a couple of weeks.

 

People wishing him injury need to grow us, that really is just sad. His contract expired, he’s well within his rights to leave. It’s like reading Liverpool fans whinge about Trent, all over again.

Agree with this, but the man 100% has premier league quality and the longer he stayed fit the better he looks. He could (if he stayed fit and oh stayed) have played a huge part in our promotion next season.

That’s not strictly true though is it?  He used his lawyers to help him get out of it on a technicality and some of us have had a stomach full of that recently.

No, his contract expired. Saints did not exercise the option to extend in time, and his advisors advised he did not need to agree the extension. He has technically not been offered a new contract and so is a free agent. He hasn't turned anything down and he hasn't as far as we know got anything else lined up. How about we stop villifying the guy who gave us a lot in the last 6 months in league and especially cup and see what happens after Scotland exit the WC. None of us know exactly what is happening or has happened.

Ultimately though, I can understand in his circumstances that he wants to get the best possible contract at this key point of his career. He's 29 years old and has missed a fair chunk of his time to progress his career through injury. The end of his contract with us has coincided with his best period of fitness and scoring at Championship level in his career to date and he can't guarantee that will be the case in a year's time, he may be long term injured again. So I personally understand why he is trying to pursue the best possible deal while he can and wish him good luck. (We could have avoided this situation by activating the extension clause in the time frame allowed but didn't do that, possibly for good reasons due to the play off situation but that was our choice (or balls up) so fair play to him).

Agreed but the “if he stayed” fit part isn’t worth the risk from a business standpoint.  We can now turn our attentions to another striker and hope we’ve learned from the Downs mistake.

He is a known quantity for us. But also for himself. And I think this is possibly where his advisors are doing him a disservice regarding playing time and conditions- but not on what’s really the issue - £££££&. 
 

 IF Tonda stays and RS signed up it’s a given what Saints tactics will be regarding playing time ie same as end of last year by rotating him and Larin. 
 

That “ playing time” will be a critical element of his longevity as a pro.. If you are looking at how many footballing weeks salary this lanky injury prone striker is going to get out of his legs it depends largely ( playing and training injury accidents aside) on how he’s used and what load he’s put under and how it’s managed. 
 

Saints already know this and would use him judiciously. R/S options look like Scotland or another Champ team, LCFC or as a back up EPL squad striker 
 

Other Scottish clubs? Bought a WC striker and will expect immediate goals and to play lots and lots of minutes as the main man in Scotland - he will get injured for sure. 
 

Championship? He plays 10 games in first month and will be damaged for rest of year. 
 

Back up in EPL? Seriously limited chances of that.  We sent a better lad then him off to Everton and he never plays. MF, JWP and KWP all left for that all got relegated. 
 

He has gone for a sign on fee that will set him up for life. Simple as that. Given the above this is the last chance to get that jackpot whatever his legs do going forwards.We’d all do same.
