Joshua Quarshie - Official Signs 4 Year Deal

Southampton Football Club is delighted to announce that an agreement has been reached to secure the signing of promising young central defender Joshua Quarshie from TSG Hoffenheim.

A Germany Under-20 international, Quarshie will join the club on a four-year deal from July 1st, becoming Saints’ first signing of the summer and the first addition under new Men’s First Team Manager Will Still.

The 20-year-old made his Bundesliga debut aged 18, earning most of his experience with Hoffenheim’s second team, as well as on loan with Fortuna Düsseldorf and Greuther Fürth, making 28 appearances in the German second tier.

Standing at 6ft 5in tall and boasting explosive pace, Quarshie was statistically the fastest player in 2. Bundesliga this season with a top speed of 37.04 km/h.

Group Technical Director Johannes Spors said: “Joshua is a talented young player with good experience for his age, having played more than 80 senior games already in his career, and has tremendous physical qualities.

“His outstanding athleticism makes him a natural fit for the energetic playing style our new manager hopes to implement. As a club we are committed to improving young players, and Joshua is very determined to develop his game with us.”

Joshua Quarshie said: “It makes me feel very happy because Southampton is a very big club with very good history. From the first second, I felt Southampton is the right club.

“English football is a little bit rough and I like this kind of playing style. With my height and my body, I think I’m in the right spot. Since I was a little kid I was dreaming to play in England and now it’s coming to reality, so I’m very excited to play here.”

Welcome.

Know nothing about him, but I am pleased to see us moving quickly for a change.

The lack of strategy and leaving transfers to the last minute has been costing us dearly under SR imo.

we need to get everyone through the door and build a team as quickly as possible

I wonder if this bloke will be backup for the other centre backs? Edwards you feel will be first choice, it maybe depends if we play 3 at the back and how many leave out of Bednarek, Stephens, Wood and THB.

Pace and physicality, just what we need.

Funny to see this being done so early the kit isn’t even ready for the announcement video.

I wonder why they've decided to release it now? I suppose it's positive signals about being ready to go and prepared. Will he be here before July? I assume not.

The announcement says he's bringing in specific traits Still is looking for in his team. So, I'd guess everyone is fighting for a first team spot. If he offers more to Still's system in preseason, seniority might count for little.

Also a further nod to players who have already indicated they want to leave, or who the club have said they want them to leave, to get something sorted.

It’s certainly going to be interesting and don’t forget Sanda who I think is at the right level now too.  If he’s not in the first team immediately I would be surprised as he’s the perfect fit for Still’s system(s). Can you imagine losing the ball in the oppo area and for once the first Saints player back to defend the break is this guy as he is super quick?! I think he could give Sulemana a run for his money. From the little I’ve seen he’s got a good pass on him and is not scared of putting his body on the line too.

Welcome to Saints Joshua.

This is a good start, now we need to ship out the dross, keep hold of talented players and bring in more athletic and physical players. I want to see us have a side that bullies other teams for once!

A Rickie Lambert type would be amazing. I still think we should go for a big money striker if we manage to keep Fernandes and then at least have a look at Richard Kone in the squad. He's going to be a better option than Mara was last time and we would probably get him for about 3 million.

Whatever happens, getting in strong, fast and tall players is going to be a new experience for us watching.

I like this one. Offers us something different to what we have today, will cover for the countless mistakes whatever others of our useless CB's stay.

THB, Stephens, Edwards, Quarshie, Sanda offers us a decent variety of experience (at this level) and youth.

Wouldn't mind us replacing one of THB or Stephens with a more traditional, old school CB.

Agreed - the spine of the team for so long has been as soft as a spongy floppy thing. Downes is likely to stay I think, so will Charles be the big enforcer type we need at CDM - our new Romeu? I’m not sure that’s his bag frankly, so perhaps we’ll see another player come in to do the job.

Id like to see us really try something new and bring in some footballers that can actually play football

Was saying this earlier. Think we’re dying for a bit of a no nonsense hard man who’s been around the block in English football. Too many fannies in our dressing room.

Especially the centre backs we’ve relied on the last 2 seasons, they spend far too much time waving their arms in the air and blaming each other. We’ve been missing that kind of leader since Romeu left

I’d like to see two regular starter CB’s like the old days of Claus and Killer - they developed a cracking partnership. Same obviously with Van Dick and ? (name escapes me). There’s been so little consistency in the back 4/5 over too many seasons to my mind.

You probably need three good players in the middle who can rotate. Hopefully we dispose of Smallbone immediately and with Ugachukwu gone and Aribo likely to leave that leaves a space for someone else.

Last year it was largely Bednarek and THB wasnt it?

I would like to see us put in an offer for Big Les even if it’s a new loan - I think he was developing well here and has all the attributes that Still requires.

Agreed. That or an ambitious loan from elsewhere would be best if we do manage to keep Charles and Downes

Agreed, but the fact he did well last season probably means he'll attract a Prem club. Burnley or Leeds would love a player like him.

Aldeweireld. Him and Van Dijk never played together, though.

FWIW, I don't disagree that I think he's be perfect for our new system (what I expect it to be). However, Chelsea paid the best part of 30m for him. I can't see them letting him drop down the championship, nor can I expect him to want to.

I would say much more likley to return to france... possibly strasbourg, thier sister club.

yep - Fonte was the mainstay for them both, until he left in the January (and we saw little of VVD post that anyway)

He stands at over six foot five

Quarshie, Quarshie

In a three he's bound to thrive

Quarshie, Quarshie

He gets the ball and takes the piss

Runs as fast as John Regis*

Joshua Quarshie Southampton's...errr... defending... machine

We went from Fonte and Alderweirld/Van Dijk to Stephens and Yoshida 😂

I think something that's missed in the fans not warming to Puel is his treatment of Fonte in that last season. No doubt in my mind that if he'd been starting every game, domestic and europe, as he wanted to be that he would have stayed.

This is exactly it isn’t it….

pelle and mane, to Ings and Adams, to Adams  and Armstrong, to Armstrong and onuachu, to onuachu and archer.

theres definitely a downward trend all over the squad. It’s almost like expecting “squad players” to improve your first team  once you sell the quality…

I dont think that was Puel. Story goes Fonte came came back from the Euros playing billy big bollocks and making all sorts of demands, his agent had put some info out that Man United were in for him to try and force Saints hand but we didn't back down and that was the output of it
