I'm not telling anyone anything but if people see P&O on a shirt they will associate it it with anything with P&O on it , ferry or whatever ffs.

You can't legislate for idiots unfortunately. I remember back in the day an estate agents in Staines got attacked because it was called ISIS. Think they changed it to Oasis in the end.

Not that Costa

Costa hasn't been owned by Whitbread since 2018. Coke bought it. I was one of the consultants in charge of the split.

Quite an interesting one actually, Whitbread had a market value of around £4bn which was way too low, so they hastily decoupled and split Costa into its own company to sell to Coca Cola, for around £4bn. The Whitbread share price stayed the same, valuing the company at, £4bn.

So as I understand it, season ticket holders should be getting free coffees on ferry trips then...

Only if you're wearing the new shirt though..

Yep its all on ChatGPT, it told me the same thing in the same words except I am old enough to remember the White Star Line

Lol my post was based on my geeky ability to remember random crap rather than AI, cokes in handy for quizzes etc 🤣

I'm not old enough to remember the white star line but 2 of my wife's ancestors survived the sinking (including one who was a trimmer in the engine room and got out despite being buried by a load of coal at one point!).

I remember going down the docks to see the QE2. Grandad's comment was that it wasn't properly built as you could see all it's ribs 😄

I think he meant it wasn't riveted together but welded !

He was a machinist in the docks , Dad worked on diesel engine boats in the war including one of the D day command boats , he and fellow engine mechanics were allowed up to see the operation room with a scale 3D model of one section of the Normandy beaches .

I think Noel Gallagher owns that estate agent?

To be fair, it is fucking retarded to dispose of a business but keep the disposed and legacy business under the same brand.

They aren't under the same brand!

One is called P&O Cruises.

The other is called P&O Ferries.

See if you can spot the difference ;)

Yeah but in my day they were known as P&O  not P&O ferry cross the Mersey or any other combo ! What you always knew stays in your head .

Did you used to think The Dell was sponsored by an IT company?

So to summarise

P&O Cruises and Ferries are not the same company but one of them owns Whitbread who used to own Costa Coffee. Noel Gallagher has brought himself an Estate Agents in Staines, Kent has lost control of its borders and you can spot the locals as they'll be wearing fake saints shirts from China.

Now, you say that but.......

Cunard acquired the White Star Line just after the war and went on to become part of the Carnival Corporation who also own, yes you've guessed it, the Peninsular & Oriental Steam Navigation Company :)

I think Cunard and White Star Line were basically forced to amalgamate by the British Government as both companies were in financial difficulties and Cunard were unable to complete the construction of Queen Mary up in Glasgow unless a grant from the Govt was provided.
So the amalgamation was part of the deal.

Turks, I never know you are serious or using your intellect to play mind games with the hoi polloi.
In case anyone is confused, Carnival Cruise Line own Costa Cruises (an Italian based company) who are a completely different company to Costa Coffee.
You're welcome.

I have had shares in Carnival PLC for twenty years. They entitle me to a useful on board credit whenever I cruise on one of their brands.

I also used to have shares in P&O Ferries until they were taken over by Dubai Ports. They used to give me a useful discount when I used to travel several times a year to France.

Believe me, there is no connection between them.

Didnt you sell when the shares reached £40?
They went down to £8 after Covid but now on the up at £18 last time I looked after better than expected results

My mate runs a tailors, and apparently a chap came in yesterday with several luxury dressing gowns and requested that the 'N' be removed from the 'MON' monogram.

Quite rare cruises that do that.

The mainstream lines, like the company that owns the coffee brand (and has a concession on their ships) tend to visit Flam, Olden, Helsyllt in the Fjords and add on a couple of sea towns like Haugesund, Kristiansand, Stavanger to make up the cruise length.

Still nice to sail along a Fjord sat on a balcony with a nice cup of Costa.

P&O don't sail from Portsmouth, Brittany Ferries do

And that ironically caused the fabled Dock Strike that Pompey fans are completely misguided about.
Pompey Dockers broke an agreement not to work the Brittany Ferry Service which was based in Plymouth at the time and the Plymouth, Poole and Weymouth Dockers, in small numbers, backed up by around 500 Soton Dockies went down to Pompey Commercial Port, which had only started operating in 1975, to protest.

This was in November 1976 and it was headline news in both the Daily Echo and Pompey Mail.

Ironically I have never heard any Pompey fan mention this heinous behaviour.

Bum, I thought £4.25 seemed exceptionally good value for a cruise, it all makes sense now. I don’t know how to tell the wife.

Three pages to ascertain that there are two companies called P and O that share the same name, but are totally unrelated to each other. You can certainly tell it's the close season.

I think East Kent Saint got it in the end though ;)

I can recommend that. My wife and I went several times on big ships which is the  best way to see the fjords and since I lost her I've been a couple of times on the Hurtigruten Coastal Express which is different but very rewarding.

No I didn't.  I think they went over £50 at one point. In the past few years I bought another 100 shares at about £11 but as you say they dribbled down and when they had recovered to £13.50 I sold them. I still have my original holding which have  probably given me a few thousand pounds of onboard credit initially with P&O but for the last few years with Princess. I jumped ship when P&O upset me.

Coving was a big challenge.  I think Carnival took out a $60bn dollar loan facility to see us through. The dividends were useful too but there has been no sign of those for several years.

The shorter cruises don't go that far up but anything over about ten nights definitely will.

Which shares - Carnival CCL are currently listed at £1980 per share...

FO and Hurtigruten go there, I think Ambassador do as well - not sure about NCL, but the main ones from Southampton, P&O, MSC, Princess, Carnival only do shorter 7 day cruises.
