{ Without too much thought.........}

Apollo 13              ( I know the entire script by heart but still watch it several times a year )

High Society.       ( Not usually a fan of musicals, but this is just brilliant )

Star Wars ( A New Hope )     ( Does this need explaining ? )

Casablanca.        ( Watching it for the first time is the beginning of a beautiful friendship )

LA Confidential   ( Well made, good cast, strong story )

A Matter of Life and Death      ( An object lesson in film making )

( and so many more )

Ask me agsin tomorrow and you will get a different list.

I can't pick one, it's mood dependant.

Today it's Pulp Fiction.

Judging by your post just now on the "Small things that annoy you..." thread, that's understandable;

"The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the inequities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men..."

Yep! It's been that kind of morning. If a pop tart pops up in front of me, someone's for it.

Yeah, it’s so hard to pick just one. As egg says, is a mood thing.

Goodfellas probably would get the nod from me if absolutely pushed. But also:

Godfather I and II

The Martian

Star Wars IV A New Hope

Shawshank Redemption

Most of those on Turkish’s list.

Can’t believe I left Goodfellas off, a classic

I like the Godfather films but always felt they were a little bit over rated

When I was younger I never really rated the Godfather films too much, but I’ve really enjoyed watching them over the last 5-10 years or so. I used to think Godfather III was quite terrible in comparison, but I’ve found I’ve got much more time for it these days.

Other films that I’d happily watch if on TV:

The Prestige

Inception

The Matrix (not the subsequent ones though)

Interstellar

Se7en

Silence of the lambs; and also Red Dragon, plus Manhunter which preceded it

The departed

American History X

Goodfellas

Casino

Gotti (Amand Asante version)

Donnie Brasco

Usual Suspects

Training Day

Shawshank

The Firm

Imitation Game

i love American Mob stuff and to read about its history and current situation. I watch the YouTube uploads from Michael Franzese.

for me, Denzel is a great and like most of the stuff where he js the main character, like the Equaliser - Parts 4 & 5 are being made

Yep to all apart from the top guns. No idea how many times I've seen lock stock.

I'd add goodfellas, legend, wolf of wall street, and a bronx take too.

I could watch back to the future time and time again (no pun intended), and forest gump is superb.

Like @badgerx16, there would be a lot I'd enjoy, so it could change. Random favs, I won't pass by.

Seven Samurai - A mix of action, numerous character subplots and dealing with wider cultural changes.
Le Diner de Cons - So funny that even the characters burst out laughing at what's going on.
Micmacs - Uplifting flights of fancy, built on sadness, heists, togtherness and the arms trade. Amelie also a great watch.
Quatermass and the Pit - A superb example of a multi layered plot, with Hammer production values.
Aliens - Keeps a lot of the beats of the original, and as much as I like that one, I watch this one more.
Akira - A worthy, but not slaveish take on the manga. Lots of layers from political intrigue to evolution of our species.
Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead - Oldman, Roth, lots of wordplay and physical comedy around a tragedy.
Metropolis - Years ahead of it's time. M is the better movie, but I've seen this more.

Brando is fucking astonishing in that when you think of the time- somewhat similar to Jimmy Cagney in White Heat or Angels.

One flew Over the Cuckoos Nest needs adding to the above list. Shining as well. Sometimes the actors performance elevates the film way beyond its level.

But an example of a film where nobody acted particularly well but it was still top drawer is Terminator 2.

Raiders of the lost Ark. Brilliant big proper moviemaking. Perfect.

Empire Strikes Back. The darkest Star Wars before we had Andor.

Jaws...lovely stuff

Pulp Fiction. Genius, my fav I think.

Alien...ah fuck it, love them all.

Inglorious Basterds....Hans Landa...best Nazi movie bastard ever

Aliens...know it off by heart, childhood favourite

Die Hard. Alan Rickman best Christmas movie baddie ever

Ghostbusters. So bloody fun

Trainspotting....came out at the right time for me as a 20 year old student, not as a smack addict.

Special mentions to - Oppenheimer, Dunkirk, Spirited Away, Shawshank, LOTR trilogy, Bladerunner, Life of Brian, Hot Fuzz, the Shining. And many more.

You’ve mentioned two of Jack Nicholson’s roles there;  what about his role in Chinatown as a private investigator?   Recommended…..he and Faye Dunaway are memorable.     Also, Broken Flowers, with Bill Murray, where in a depressed state he sets off to visit a handful of ex girlfriends.

the Green Book is fantastic. The real driver became an actor and played a crime boss in the Sopranos (I think)

Haven’t we done this a few times? Searching for a thread doesn’t seem to be a basic function the forum provides. I recall saying I think Shawshank is somewhat overrated by men mostly a few times.

That might just be from @trousers selection 🙂

I can't choose just one. For me the stand out films are:-

Schindler's List, Hidden Figures, Psycho (1960), Goldfinger (have to have a Bond film and I liked this one the best).

The film I will never forget and is the most disturbing I have watched in 73 years of cinemagoing is Zone of Interest.

Couldn't pick an outright favourite, and plenty of classics on my list have already been mentioned. Depending on my mood I would also add:

Fargo (absolute perfection)

Little Miss Sunshine (my go to feel good movie with a superb climax)

And more recently - Arrival. An incredibly clever and thought-provoking film from a master craftsman director.

Yep, but it's a lot more wholesome than the political stuff.

Aw man, Jaws is about to start on BBC2.

I'm supposed to be getting up early to drive to the Lake District tomorrow, but I'm gonna have to see it all the way through to "Smile you son of a bitch" now aren't I.
